Why Subaru Drivers Choose Scott's
Subaru dealers in the Salt Lake Valley bill in the range of $150–170 per hour, and the service department model means you're often talking to an advisor who relays information between you and a technician you never meet. At Scott's, it's simpler: the mechanic who diagnoses your Subaru does the repair and explains it at pickup. Subarus are common in Utah because they're genuinely suited to the terrain — Symmetrical AWD handles Wasatch mountain roads and winter salt effectively — but that use accelerates wear on drivetrain fluids that factory intervals don't account for. We've replaced enough EJ head gaskets to do it correctly, with resurfaced heads and updated multi-layer steel gaskets, rather than the shortcut version that comes back in three years. Timing belt service on boxer engines is a complete job here: belt, water pump, idler and tensioner pulleys, and thermostat — because reopening that access later to fix what was skipped costs more in labor than doing it right the first time.
Subaru AWD System Knowledge
Subaru's symmetrical AWD has specific maintenance requirements. We understand the drivetrain, timing components, and known failure points that affect Subarus in Utah's climate.
Subaru-Specific Fluids
Subaru boxer engines and AWD systems require specific coolant, gear oil, and differential fluid. We stock the correct specs — not generic alternatives that cause long-term damage.
Timing & Engine Specialists
Timing belt replacement is the most critical scheduled service on your Subaru. We replace the belt, water pump, tensioners, and thermostat as a complete kit.
Honest Subaru Diagnosis
Many Subaru issues — like head gasket leaks — have a range of severity. We explain exactly what yours looks like before recommending any repair.
When to Bring Your Subaru In
Bring your Subaru in if you notice coolant level dropping without a puddle under the car, any oily residue along the side of the engine, a chirp or squeak at idle, or a shudder when accelerating. These are early signs of problems that cost less to fix when caught early. There's no charge to find out what's going on.
If your Subaru is approaching 100,000 miles and timing belt service hasn't been done yet, bring it in before driving it further. A broken belt on these engines causes serious engine damage with no warning beforehand — we'll tell you exactly where you stand.
Who to Trust for Subaru Repair in South Salt Lake
Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operated in South Salt Lake since 1990. The mechanic who works on your Subaru is the same person who diagnoses it and explains it when you pick it up. No service advisor, no upsell quotas.
Subaru has been a regular part of our workload for decades — Outbacks, Foresters, Imprezas, Crosstreks, and WRX models. We know the platform and give you a straight answer about what your car actually needs.
How We Work With Subaru Drivers
Tell Us What's Going On
An oil seep at the head, a coolant level that keeps dropping, a chirp at idle that goes away when you press the clutch, or a timing belt interval due. The more specific, the faster we find it.
Free Diagnostic Inspection
We road test, inspect the boxer engine externally for leak points, check coolant condition, and read fault codes. Head gasket issues and timing system condition both get evaluated before we recommend anything.
Clear Explanation of What We Found
What's failing, what the repair involves, what we'll replace while we have access, and what it costs. Written estimate before any work starts.
Complete Repairs, Not Minimized Ones
If we're replacing the timing belt, we're doing the water pump, tensioners, and thermostat. If we're replacing head gaskets, we're resurfacing the heads and checking the cooling system. We don't leave the next failure scheduled.
Road Test and Handoff
We verify cooling system integrity and drive behavior before the car goes back, and walk you through what was done at pickup.

Frequently Asked Questions — Subaru Repair
Do all Subaru engines have head gasket problems?
The older EJ-series 2.5L boxer engine has a well-documented head gasket failure pattern. Newer FB-series engines are significantly improved. If you have an EJ-engine Subaru, we recommend monitoring for external oil seeping and using Subaru-spec coolant to help slow the failure pattern.
When does my Subaru need a timing belt?
Every 105,000 miles without exception. Subaru boxer engines are interference engines — a broken timing belt destroys the engine. We perform a complete belt service including the water pump, idler pulleys, tensioner, and thermostat since they're all accessible at the same time.
Why does my Subaru chirp or squeak at idle?
If the sound goes away when you press the clutch pedal, it's the throw-out bearing. It will eventually fail completely, so we recommend addressing it during your next clutch service — that way you're not paying for the same labor access twice.
My Subaru shakes when I accelerate. What's causing it?
Acceleration shudder on Subaru AWD vehicles most commonly comes from inner CV joint wear. It's frequently misdiagnosed as a transmission or AWD system problem. We properly diagnose the source before recommending any repair.
Can I put just one new tire on my Subaru?
No — and it's not just a suggestion. Subaru's AWD system can be damaged by running tires with significantly different diameters. If one tire is damaged, you need to replace in pairs or all four, matching tread depth of the existing tires as closely as possible.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Subarus in the Salt Lake Valley.
Subaru timing belt service is the most critical scheduled maintenance on the vehicle. When replacing the belt, also replace the water pump, tensioner pulleys, and thermostat — they share the same service access and doing them together costs far less than revisiting the job later.
Subaru's AWD system requires all four tires to be within 2/32" of tread depth of each other. Running mismatched tires forces the center differential to compensate continuously, accelerating wear and potentially causing premature failure.
Subaru boxer engines require Subaru-compatible coolant — or an equivalent blue-dye formula — to protect the head gaskets from corrosion. Standard green or orange coolant lacks the additives Subaru's aluminum head gaskets need.
Subaru turbocharged engines are particularly sensitive to oil quality and change intervals. The turbocharger is oil-cooled — degraded oil causes bearing wear that's expensive to address. Short intervals with full synthetic are cheap insurance.

5-Star Reviews
What Our Customers Say
Real reviews from Google — 5 stars across the board
“Scott has always preferred good work on my vehicles. I had his shop replace the driveline on my 2014 VW Touareg — not an easy job. The cost was cheaper than another shop. They did a great job. I had them rebuild the alternator because it was too cold for me to do it. The cost was better than I thought. I am very pleased with their work. Scott has always given me good solid advice.”
“What a smart no nonsense guy. Really don't think there's a better mechanic in the Valley. Scott's replaced my Ford Edge's transmission, worked on my Honda and gonna do some work on my new Tundra I'm sure. Take it to Scott's not the dealership. 10 STARS!”
“Excellent mechanic. We've used Scott for decades and keep coming back. Honest and friendly. Still keep coming back.”
“Excellent service. Scott has your best interest in mind and helps you find the best possible solution for your broken down vehicle. Very knowledgeable and you can trust your vehicle will be in good hands.”
“Knew what he was doing. Diagnosed my truck's clutch in 15 mins. Picked up the part and I was on my way in an hour. Reasonable price, too.”
“When my previous mechanic told me my car could not be fixed I was desperate and about to get rid of it. But before I gave up I wanted to try one last mechanic. Then I found Scott — brought the car to him and he fixed it quickly like nothing. I couldn't believe it, my car was just running fine. Scott is a genius, he resurrected my dead car!”
