Why Subaru Legacy Drivers Choose Scott's Auto

A Subaru Legacy is built to run a long time, but the boxer engine and all-wheel-drive driveline have their own service rhythm — and getting it wrong gets expensive. At Scott's, the same mechanic who diagnoses your Legacy does the repair, so nothing gets lost in translation. You get a plain-language explanation and a written estimate before any wrench turns.

We Know Subaru Head Gaskets

EJ25 head gasket seepage is one of the most common Subaru jobs we do. We've replaced enough of them to know the warning signs early — and to do the job once, correctly, with the right gaskets.

AWD Driveline Done Right

Symmetrical AWD means all four tires and both axles have to match and work together. We service CV axles, differentials, and driveline components with attention to keeping the system balanced.

Timing Belt and Chain Experience

EJ engines use an interval timing belt; FB engines use a chain. We know which is which by year and engine, and we service both correctly so a worn part never takes out your boxer engine.

Free Diagnosis on Every Legacy

We road test, scan for codes, and inspect your Legacy before recommending anything. You know what's wrong and what it costs before we start. No diagnostic fee.

When to Bring Your Subaru Legacy In

We've serviced Subaru Legacys at our South Salt Lake shop across every generation, from early EJ22 sedans to current turbocharged XTs. When a Legacy comes in, we road test it, scan for stored codes if the light is on, and do a full visual inspection before recommending anything. The issues below are the ones we see most consistently on the Legacy. If yours is showing any of these, bring it in and we'll tell you exactly what's going on — at no charge.

EJ25 Head Gasket Seepage

The 2.5L EJ boxer engine — common in Legacys from the late '90s through the 2000s — is known for external head gasket leaks. You'll often spot oily residue or a coolant smell around the sides of the engine, and sometimes a slowly dropping coolant level. Caught early it's a straightforward gasket job; ignored, it can lead to overheating and far worse. We inspect the gasket area on every EJ-powered Legacy that comes through.

Timing Belt Due on EJ Engines

Legacys with EJ-series engines use a rubber timing belt that needs replacement on a mileage interval — and the EJ25 is an interference engine, so a snapped belt means bent valves. We replace the belt along with the tensioner, idlers, and usually the water pump while we're in there, since they share the same labor.

Clutch Wear on Manual Legacy GT

Manual-transmission Legacys, especially the turbocharged GT, will wear a clutch faster when they're driven the way they're meant to be. Signs include a high or grabby engagement point, slipping under acceleration, or a burning smell after hill climbs. We carry quality OEM-spec clutch kits and know the correct break-in procedure.

CV Axle Clicking on Turns

That rhythmic clicking when you turn — most noticeable at low speed in a parking lot — is a worn CV joint. The boot cracks, grease escapes, grit gets in, and the joint wears. On an AWD Legacy a failed axle can also load the rest of the driveline, so it's worth addressing promptly. We replace the complete axle shaft for a durable repair.

Check Engine Light — Catalyst and O2 Codes

As Legacys age, P0420 catalyst-efficiency codes and O2 sensor faults are common reasons the check engine light comes on — and they also cause emissions failures. We scan for codes, verify the actual root cause, and fix what genuinely needs fixing instead of just clearing the light.

Worn Struts and Bouncy Ride

Utah's frost-heaved roads and canyon miles wear Legacy struts over time. If your Legacy floats over dips, bounces more than once after a bump, or nose-dives under braking, the struts are likely tired. We inspect all four corners and replace struts in pairs to keep the car balanced.

Who to Trust for Subaru Legacy Repair in South Salt Lake

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. We're not a chain, and there's no service-advisor layer between you and your mechanic — the person who diagnoses your Legacy is the one who repairs it. That means direct answers, accurate estimates, and one person accountable for the work.

We've worked on Legacys from every era — early EJ22 sedans, head-gasket-prone 2.5s, manual GT turbos, and current Global Platform cars. Whether your Legacy needs a head gasket, a timing belt, a clutch, or just an honest opinion on whether that noise matters, you'll get a straight answer and a written estimate before any work starts.

How We Work With Subaru Legacy Drivers

1

Tell Us What Your Legacy Is Doing

Describe the noise, the leak, the warning light, or the scheduled service you need. The more detail you give us about your Legacy, the faster we can zero in on it.

2

Free Diagnostic Inspection

We road test your Legacy, scan for stored codes, check fluid condition, and inspect the boxer engine and AWD driveline before recommending a single repair.

3

We Explain What We Found

Plain language, no jargon. You get a written estimate covering exactly what your Legacy needs, what it costs, and why. Nothing starts until you approve it.

4

Only the Work Your Legacy Needs

We repair your Legacy with the right OEM-spec parts and fluids. If something can safely wait, we tell you and note it so you can plan ahead — no upsells.

5

Road Test and Walkthrough at Pickup

We verify the repair under real driving conditions before you pick up your Legacy. At pickup we walk you through what was done and what to watch for next.

Where to Find Us — Subaru Legacy Repair in South Salt Lake

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair is located at 144 W Crystal Ave in South Salt Lake — centrally positioned in the valley, within 15 minutes of most Salt Lake City zip codes. Easy to reach from I-15, serving Subaru Legacy drivers from Millcreek, Murray, Draper, Sandy, West Jordan, Taylorsville, and across the greater Salt Lake area.

Subaru Legacy Maintenance Tips for Utah Drivers

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Subaru Legacys in the Salt Lake Valley.

Watch coolant level closely on EJ-powered Legacys. The 2.5L boxer is prone to slow external head gasket seepage, and a coolant level that drops a little each month is the early warning. Catching it before it overheats on an I-15 climb saves you a far bigger repair.

Don't stretch the timing belt interval on EJ Legacys. The 2.5L is an interference engine — if the belt breaks, the valves hit the pistons. Salt Lake's heat-and-cold cycling ages rubber faster than a mild climate, so service the belt on schedule, not past it.

Keep all four tires matched on your AWD Legacy. Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive doesn't tolerate mismatched tire diameters — a worn pair against a new pair forces the center differential to fight itself. Rotate regularly and replace tires as a set of four.

What Our Customers Say

Real reviews from Google — 5 stars across the board

★★★★★

“Scott has always preferred good work on my vehicles. I had his shop replace the driveline on my 2014 VW Touareg — not an easy job. The cost was cheaper than another shop. They did a great job. I had them rebuild the alternator because it was too cold for me to do it. The cost was better than I thought. I am very pleased with their work. Scott has always given me good solid advice.”

“What a smart no nonsense guy. Really don't think there's a better mechanic in the Valley. Scott's replaced my Ford Edge's transmission, worked on my Honda and gonna do some work on my new Tundra I'm sure. Take it to Scott's not the dealership. 10 STARS!”
