Why Subaru WRX Drivers Choose Scott's Auto

WRX owners care how their car is treated, and a dealer's revolving door of service writers and unknown techs doesn't inspire confidence — especially at $150-plus an hour. At Scott's, one mechanic diagnoses and repairs your WRX, and you get a written estimate first. We understand performance cars and the way enthusiasts drive them, so we know what to look at on a turbo Subaru that's seen canyon runs.

Clutch Specialists for Turbo Subarus

Clutch replacement is one of our core services, and WRX clutches — driven hard, launched, and worked through traffic — are routine for us. We stock quality OEM-spec kits, resurface the flywheel, and know the correct break-in procedure.

We Understand How WRXs Get Driven

A WRX on canyon roads wears clutches, brakes, and suspension faster than a commuter car. We inspect with that in mind and give you a straight read on what's worn from spirited driving versus what's a real problem.

Turbo-Boxer Engine Experience

The turbocharged flat-four has its own service needs — clean oil on a strict schedule, healthy cooling, and watchful diagnostics. We've worked on Subaru turbo engines for years and know where they need attention.

Free Diagnosis on Every WRX

We road test, scan for codes, and inspect your WRX before recommending anything. You'll know what's wrong and what it costs before we start. No diagnostic fee.

When to Bring Your Subaru WRX In

We've serviced Subaru WRXs at our South Salt Lake shop for many years — from bugeye GD cars to the current FA24. When a WRX comes in, we road test it, scan for codes if a light is on, and inspect the engine, driveline, and suspension before recommending anything. The issues below are the ones we see most on hard-driven WRXs. If yours shows any of them, bring it in for a free diagnosis.

Clutch Wear from Spirited Driving

WRX clutches take a beating — launches, canyon runs, and the occasional autocross day wear them faster than commuter use. A high or grabby engagement point, slipping under hard acceleration, or trouble finding gears are the signs. WRX clutches driven hard can need replacement well before 60,000 miles. We carry quality kits and resurface the flywheel as part of the job.

Burning Smell After Hard Driving

A burning smell after a canyon run on a WRX often comes from a slipping clutch overheating, but it can also be hot brakes or an oil seep onto the exhaust. We track down the actual source — clutch, brakes, or a leak — instead of guessing, so the right thing gets fixed.

Grinding Into Gear

A WRX that grinds going into gear — often into second or third under quick shifts — can have a clutch that isn't fully releasing, worn hydraulics, or worn synchros from hard shifting. We diagnose which it is before recommending a repair so you don't pay for the wrong part.

Brake Fade and Wear from Canyon Use

WRXs get driven hard on canyon descents, and that heat-checks rotors and wears pads quickly. A pulsing pedal, squealing, a soft feel after repeated stops, or longer stopping distances all warrant an inspection. We measure pads and rotor runout and replace what's needed for confident braking.

Worn Suspension on Hard-Driven Cars

Spirited driving and Utah's rough pavement wear WRX struts, shocks, and bushings faster than gentle use. A bouncy or floaty ride, clunking over bumps, or vague handling points to worn suspension. We inspect the full setup and replace what's tired so the car feels planted again.

Clicking CV Axles

A rhythmic clicking on turns means a CV joint is worn — and on a WRX, hard cornering and launches accelerate joint wear once a boot cracks. We replace the complete axle shaft rather than repacking a boot, which is far more durable on a car putting turbo power through all four wheels.

Who to Trust for Subaru WRX Repair in South Salt Lake

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. We're not a chain, and there's no service-advisor layer — the mechanic who diagnoses your WRX is the one who repairs it. For an enthusiast car, that means talking directly to the person doing the work and getting a written estimate before anything starts.

We've worked on WRXs from every generation — bugeye GD cars, GR and GV hatchbacks, VA sedans, and the current FA24. Whether yours needs a clutch, brakes, suspension, CV axles, or a straight answer about a noise after a canyon run, you'll get an honest assessment and a price up front.

1

Tell Us What Your WRX Is Doing

Describe the noise, the shift feel, the warning light, or the service you're due for. The more detail you give about your WRX, the faster we zero in.

2

Free Diagnostic Inspection

We road test your WRX, scan for stored codes, check fluids, and inspect the engine, driveline, and suspension before recommending a single repair.

3

We Explain What We Found

Plain language, no jargon. You get a written estimate covering exactly what your WRX needs, the cost, and the reason. Nothing starts until you approve it.

4

Only the Work Your WRX Needs

We repair your WRX with the right parts — OEM-spec clutch kits, fluids, and AWD-correct components — and never upsell. If a repair can safely wait, we'll tell you.

5

Road Test and Walkthrough at Pickup

We verify the repair on a real road test before you pick up. At pickup we walk you through what was done on your WRX and what to watch for going forward.

Subaru WRX Maintenance Tips for Utah Drivers

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Subaru WRXs in the Salt Lake Valley.

Stay on top of oil changes in your turbocharged WRX. The turbo runs hot and depends on clean oil — stretched intervals or cheap oil lead to sludge and shortened turbo life. Use the correct oil grade and change it on the shorter end of the interval, especially if you drive the car hard in Utah's summer heat.

Let your WRX's turbo cool down before shutting off after hard driving. After a spirited canyon run, idle for a minute before switching off so oil keeps flowing through the hot turbo bearing. Shutting down immediately after hard use can coke the oil in the turbo over time.

Flush the clutch and brake fluid every couple of years on your WRX. The clutch hydraulics share fluid with the brakes, and hard driving heats that fluid up. Old, moisture-laden fluid causes a spongy clutch pedal and brake fade — a cheap flush keeps both systems firm and reliable.
