Why Subaru Impreza Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
Subaru dealer rates run past $150 an hour, and your Impreza gets handed between a service writer and a technician you never speak to. At Scott's, one mechanic diagnoses your Impreza and does the work — and you see a written estimate before we start. The Impreza is an affordable car, and we keep repairs affordable by fixing what's actually wrong instead of padding the ticket.
Decades of Subaru AWD Experience
The Impreza's symmetrical all-wheel drive is what makes it a great Utah winter car, and it has specific needs — matched tires, correct differential fluid, proper CV axle service. We've kept Subaru AWD systems running quietly for decades.
Clutch Specialists for Manual Imprezas
Clutch replacement is a core service for us. Manual Imprezas across every generation are routine work — we stock quality OEM-spec clutch kits and know the correct break-in procedure to make them last.
Boxer Engine Know-How
The flat-four leaks and wears in places inline engines don't. We know the EJ head gasket pattern, the FB timing chain, and where these engines seep oil — so diagnosis is quick and the repair is right.
Free Diagnosis on Every Impreza
We road test, scan for codes, and inspect your Impreza before recommending anything. You'll know what's wrong and what it costs before we start. No diagnostic fee.
When to Bring Your Subaru Impreza In
We've serviced Subaru Imprezas at our South Salt Lake shop for many years — from first-gen sedans to the current Global Platform hatchbacks. When an Impreza comes in, we road test it, scan for codes if a light is on, and inspect the engine and AWD driveline before recommending anything. The issues below are what we see most on Imprezas. If yours shows any of them, bring it in for a free diagnosis.
Clutch Wear on Manual Imprezas
Manual Imprezas across every generation eventually need a clutch — sooner if the car is driven hard, used to teach someone to drive stick, or commuted in heavy traffic. A high or grabby engagement point, slipping under acceleration, or a burning smell after climbs are the signs. We carry quality clutch kits for every manual Impreza and resurface the flywheel as part of the job.
Learn more →Head Gasket Leaks on EJ Engines
Older EJ-engine Imprezas can develop external head gasket seepage — coolant or oil weeping where the head meets the block. A coolant smell after driving or a slowly dropping overflow level is the early warning. We pressure-test the cooling system, confirm the leak, and replace the gaskets with updated parts and resurfaced heads.
Learn more →Timing Belt Service on Older Imprezas
Imprezas through 2011 with EJ engines use a rubber timing belt due around 105,000 miles. The EJ is an interference engine, so a snapped belt bends valves. We replace the belt with the tensioner, idlers, and water pump as one service since they all sit behind the same covers.
Learn more →Grinding When Shifting a Manual
A manual Impreza that grinds going into gear — often most noticeable into second — can have a worn clutch hydraulic system that isn't fully releasing, or worn synchros. We diagnose whether it's clutch hydraulics, the clutch itself, or the gearbox before recommending a repair, so you don't pay for the wrong fix.
Learn more →Clicking CV Axles
A rhythmic clicking when you turn at low speed means a CV joint is worn. On an AWD Impreza the rubber boots crack with age and Utah grit gets into the joint. We replace the complete axle shaft rather than repacking a boot, which holds up far better.
Learn more →Brake Wear and Pulsation
Imprezas see plenty of winter stop-and-go and canyon driving, both hard on brakes. Squealing, a pedal pulsation, or longer stops mean it's time for an inspection. We measure pad thickness and rotor runout and replace only what's actually worn.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. We're not a chain and there's no service-advisor layer — the mechanic who diagnoses your Impreza is the one who repairs it. On an affordable car, that direct line keeps repairs honest: you get a straight assessment and a written estimate before any work starts.
We've worked on Imprezas across every generation — first-gen sedans, bugeye and hawkeye-era cars, and current Global Platform hatchbacks. Whether yours needs a clutch, head gaskets, a timing belt, CV axles, or just a clear answer about a noise, you'll get an honest price up front.
How We Work With Subaru Impreza Drivers
Tell Us What Your Impreza Is Doing
Describe the noise, the shift feel, the warning light, or the service you're due for. The more detail you give about your Impreza, the faster we narrow it down.
Free Diagnostic Inspection
We road test your Impreza, scan for stored codes, check fluids, and inspect the engine and AWD driveline before recommending a single repair.
We Explain What We Found
Plain language, no jargon. You get a written estimate covering exactly what your Impreza needs, the cost, and the reason. Nothing starts until you approve it.
Only the Work Your Impreza Needs
We repair your Impreza with the right parts — OEM-spec clutch kits, gaskets, fluids, and AWD-correct components — and never upsell. If a repair can wait, we'll tell you.
Road Test and Walkthrough at Pickup
We verify the repair on a real road test before you pick up. At pickup we walk you through what was done on your Impreza and what to watch for.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Subaru Imprezas in the Salt Lake Valley.
Keep your Impreza's tires matched and rotated. Subaru's symmetrical AWD doesn't tolerate one badly worn tire — the mismatch strains the center differential and transmission. If you replace one tire after a puncture, ask us about matching it so the driveline doesn't pay the price.
Flush the clutch and brake fluid on your manual Impreza every couple of years. The clutch hydraulic system shares fluid with the brakes, and old fluid absorbs moisture, which can cause a spongy clutch and slave cylinder failure. It's an inexpensive service that prevents a costly hydraulic repair.
Don't push the timing belt interval on an older Impreza. Utah heat and altitude age rubber components, and the EJ is an interference engine — if your pre-2012 Impreza is nearing 105,000 miles, schedule the belt before a failure bends valves and turns a planned job into a major one.
