Strut & Suspension Replacement in South Salt Lake, UT
Bouncy ride or nose-diving under braking? Your struts have worn out gradually enough that you may not have noticed how much handling has changed. Free inspection. Written estimate. No surprises.
What Is Struts?
Struts are a key part of your suspension — they absorb road bumps and keep your tires firmly on the ground. When they wear out, the car feels bouncy, the front end dips sharply when you brake, and your tires can wear unevenly. Because the wear happens slowly, most drivers don't notice how much their handling has changed until it's pointed out. See our service page for what we inspect and replace.

What Does Strut Replacement Actually Involve?
Struts serve two functions at once: they're the main suspension damper and a structural load-bearing part of the suspension. Replacing them involves more than just swapping a shock absorber.
Strut damper — the hydraulic component inside the strut that controls suspension movement. When it wears, the vehicle bounces repeatedly after bumps and pitches forward under braking instead of staying planted.
Coil spring — on most vehicles the spring is part of the strut assembly. Complete quick-strut assemblies come pre-assembled with a new spring and install as a single unit. On vehicles where the cartridge is replaced separately, a spring compressor is required to safely disassemble the strut.
Top mount and bearing — the mount connects the strut to the vehicle body, and the bearing inside allows the strut to rotate with the steering wheel. A worn mount bearing causes clunking when turning from a stop and vague steering feel. It's accessible whenever a strut is removed.
Alignment — new struts change the camber and caster angles because the new assembly has slightly different dimensions than the worn unit. Alignment after strut replacement is required, not optional. Skipping it causes accelerated inner-edge tire wear within a few thousand miles.
Depending on what we find, the work we commonly perform includes:
Do Worn Struts Affect Stopping Distance?
Strut wear happens gradually enough that most drivers adapt to it and stop noticing the change. By the time the ride feels obviously bad, stopping distance has already increased and wet-road traction has declined. Cupped tire wear from worn struts costs you tires faster than a strut replacement would have. The longer worn struts stay on the vehicle, the more they affect adjacent components through the extra movement and stress.
The most common reasons drivers come in are a bouncy ride that doesn't settle quickly after bumps, a front end that dives forward under braking, cupped or scalloped tire wear, a clunking sound when turning from a stop, vague or imprecise steering on uneven pavement, or a vehicle that feels like it's wallowing in corners. Any of those is worth a free diagnosis. We'll tell you exactly what's going on before recommending anything.
How We Inspect and Replace Your Struts
We inspect struts, top mounts, springs, and related suspension components before recommending anything. Worn struts degrade gradually, and we explain what we found and how it affects your vehicle before writing an estimate. Alignment is included in our recommendation whenever strut replacement is involved.

Who to Trust for Strut Replacement in South Salt Lake
Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been servicing suspension systems in South Salt Lake since 1990. Strut work is something we handle regularly across every make and model. We inspect the full strut assembly, top mounts, and springs before making any recommendation, so you know exactly what the vehicle needs and what you're approving.
We always recommend alignment after strut replacement and can do it the same day. That's the complete repair. Struts without alignment is an incomplete job that costs more in tire wear than the alignment would have.
Braking Distance Impact
Worn struts increase stopping distance and reduce emergency handling response. We explain the real-world safety difference, not just ride comfort.
Full Suspension Inspection
We inspect related suspension components alongside the struts so you have a complete picture of your vehicle's suspension health.
Alignment After Replacement
Strut replacement changes suspension geometry. We always recommend alignment after strut work to protect your tires and handling.
Mount and Spring Assessment
When struts are out, we assess the mounts and springs at the same time. The labor overlaps, and these components often need attention together.

Symptoms That Bring Drivers In
Bouncy Ride
The vehicle bounces two or three times after a bump instead of settling—a sign struts have lost their damping ability.
See symptom details →Nose Dive When Braking
The front end pitches dramatically forward under braking, reducing control and extending stopping distance.
See symptom details →Uneven Tire Wear
Worn struts allow tires to bounce and skip, creating cupping or scalloping patterns in the tread.
See symptom details →Rough Ride Over Bumps
Every pothole and expansion joint is felt as a sharp jolt rather than a dampened thud.

How do I know if my struts are worn?
The most reliable test: push down firmly on the front corner of the vehicle and release quickly. If it bounces more than once before settling, the struts are worn. Other signs include nose-diving under braking, vehicle body roll in corners, and cupped or scalloped tire wear.
Do struts and shocks need to be replaced together?
Struts are replaced in axle pairs (both fronts or both rears) to maintain even handling. The front and rear axles can be addressed at different times depending on wear.
Do I need an alignment after strut replacement?
Yes, always. New struts change the suspension geometry, and the alignment will be off even if it was recently done. Skipping alignment after strut work results in accelerated tire wear.
Complete strut assembly or cartridge replacement: which is right for my vehicle?
On most modern front-wheel-drive vehicles, a complete quick-strut assembly is the faster and more reliable option. All wear components are new at once. Cartridge replacement is appropriate when the spring and top mount are in good condition and the cartridge is the specific failure. We assess which is correct before starting.
Does the top mount bearing need replacing too?
When a strut is out, we inspect the top mount and spring at minimal additional labor cost. A worn top mount bearing causes clunking when turning and vague steering feel. Installing new dampers on a vehicle with failed top mounts leaves the steering problem in place and means a second strut removal later.
Why does alignment matter so much after strut replacement?
New struts have slightly different dimensions than the worn units they replaced, which shifts the camber and caster angles. Even a recently done alignment won't be correct after new struts go in. Driving without alignment after strut work typically produces inner-edge tire wear within a few thousand miles.
Is there a warranty on the repair?
Yes. Every repair we perform is backed by a 2-year parts and labor warranty. If something we fixed gives you trouble within two years, bring it back and we make it right at no charge.
How does your pricing compare to dealers and chain shops?
Our labor rates and parts pricing are consistently below dealer rates — typically 20–40% less for the same repair. We use quality parts and back every job with a 2-year parts and labor warranty. You get a written estimate before any work starts so there are no surprises.
Do you offer towing if my vehicle can't be driven?
Yes. If your repair totals over $1,000, we cover the tow to our shop. You shouldn't have to pay to get your car here on top of dealing with the breakdown. Call us and we'll arrange it.
