Why Toyota Drivers Choose Scott's
Most Toyota dealers in Salt Lake are billing $150–175 per hour. Your car gets written up by a service advisor, handed off to a tech you'll never meet, and comes back with a multipoint inspection full of items to approve or decline. At Scott's, it works differently. The mechanic who diagnoses your Toyota is the one who repairs it — same person, start to finish. They explain what they found in plain language and only recommend what your vehicle actually needs. We've been doing it that way in South Salt Lake since 1990.
Toyota Longevity Expertise
Toyota vehicles are built to run 200,000+ miles — and we know what it takes to get there. Consistent fluid changes, attention to timing components, and catching small issues before they snowball.
Correct Toyota Fluids
Toyota engines and transmissions are engineered around specific OEM-spec fluids. We stock the right oil grades, ATF, and coolant so your Toyota gets exactly what it was designed for.
Same-Day Most Services
From timing belts to clutch replacements, most Toyota repairs are completed the same day. We communicate throughout so you're never left wondering.
Honest Estimates, No Upsell
We tell you what we found and what it costs before we start. Toyota owners know what their vehicles should cost to maintain — we work to stay below dealer pricing without cutting corners.
When to Bring Your Toyota In
Bring your Toyota in any time something feels or sounds different — a new noise, a warning light, a brake pedal that's softer than usual, or a shift that hesitates. Toyotas are reliable enough that problems often get ignored until they're hard to miss. Catching something early almost always costs less than waiting. There's no charge to find out what's going on before any decision is made.
Routine service matters just as much. Oil changes, brake checks, and scheduled fluid services are what keep a Camry, Corolla, or Tacoma going to high mileage. If you're not sure what's due or where things stand, bring it in and we'll give you a clear picture at no cost to look.
Who to Trust for Toyota Repair in South Salt Lake
Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operated in South Salt Lake since 1990. We're not a chain. The mechanic who diagnoses your Toyota is the same one who works on it and explains the repair when you pick it up — same person, start to finish.
Toyota service has been part of what we do for over 35 years. When you bring your Toyota here, you get a straight answer about what your vehicle actually needs — not a list of services based on mileage thresholds, and not a quote from someone who hasn't looked at your specific car.
How We Work With Toyota Drivers
You Tell Us What's Going On
A noise, a warning light, a feel that's changed, or a scheduled service due. The more detail the better, but 'something feels off' is enough to start.
We Diagnose Before We Quote
Free diagnostic inspection on every Toyota. We road test, read fault codes, and check the relevant systems before recommending anything.
We Walk You Through What We Found
Clear explanation of what's worn, failing, or due, and what each repair involves. Written estimate before any work begins.
We Do Only the Work You Approve
Only what the diagnosis shows is needed. If something can wait, we tell you it can wait. No menu-based services.
Road Test and Handoff
We verify the repair under real driving conditions before the car goes back to you, and walk you through what was done at pickup.

Frequently Asked Questions — Toyota Repair
Does my Toyota have a timing belt or a timing chain — and why does it matter?
It depends on the engine, and it matters a lot. Belt-equipped Toyotas — generally Camry, RAV4, Tacoma, and Highlander models with 4-cylinder engines before 2006 and V6 engines before 2005 — require belt replacement at 90,000 miles. These are interference engines: if the belt snaps while running, the pistons and valves collide. The engine is destroyed. There's no warning before it happens, which is why the service interval isn't optional. Most Toyotas built after 2006 use timing chains, which don't have a fixed replacement interval but develop stretch over time. A cold-start rattle that quiets as the engine warms up is the typical first sign, sometimes paired with a check engine light for camshaft timing. If you're not sure which your Toyota has, we can look it up by VIN in one minute.
How often should I change the oil in my Toyota?
For modern Toyotas with full synthetic, 7,500–10,000 miles is the manufacturer's guidance. If you do a lot of stop-and-go in Salt Lake traffic, regularly tow, or spend weekends on canyon grades, we recommend 5,000–7,500 mile intervals. It's cheap insurance on an engine built to last 200,000+ miles.
My Toyota Prius or RAV4 Hybrid warning light is on — what does that mean?
The triangle with an exclamation mark typically indicates a hybrid system fault. The most common cause is a declining battery pack, but inverter and cooling system issues can also trigger it. We test the battery pack and individual cell health before recommending anything. A flashing red triangle indicates a more urgent system failure — don't ignore it.
When does a Toyota CVT transmission need service?
Toyota says "lifetime fluid" on many CVT-equipped models, but real-world experience doesn't support that. We recommend a CVT fluid change every 30,000–45,000 miles for normal use, sooner for vehicles that do a lot of mountain driving or towing. Degraded CVT fluid causes a shudder during light-load acceleration that gets worse over time.
When does a repair make more sense than a new car?
Toyota owners face this question more than most — a well-maintained Camry, Corolla, or Tacoma at 180,000 miles is genuinely still a good vehicle. A car payment on a replacement runs $500–700/month in today's market ($6,000–8,400 per year). Most Toyota repairs — even significant ones like a timing chain job, a clutch replacement, or a water pump — cost a fraction of that. Unless a repair approaches the vehicle's current market value, fixing it is usually the rational financial move. The Tacoma and 4Runner are in their own category — their resale value holds so well that repairs are almost always worth doing, even into high mileage. If we ever think the math doesn't work in your case, we'll tell you straight.
Is it worth repairing a high-mileage Toyota?
Usually yes. Toyota engines and transmissions are among the most durable made. A well-maintained Camry, Corolla, or Tacoma at 150,000–200,000 miles is often worth maintaining. Repair costs typically compare favorably to a car payment, and these vehicles routinely go 250,000+ miles with proper maintenance. If a repair costs more than the vehicle's market value, we'll tell you honestly.
Do you work on older Toyota models?
Yes. We service Toyotas from all eras — 1990s Camrys and Corollas, older 4Runners and Tacomas, early Prius models. Older Toyotas can have parts availability challenges, but for most mechanical work we can source what's needed. Call us if you have questions about a specific year and model.
Why is my Toyota making a clicking or grinding noise?
Clicking during turns typically points to CV axles — a common Toyota wear item. Grinding when braking usually means brake pads worn to metal contact. A cold-start knock or rattle that quiets as the engine warms up points to timing chain or VVT system issues. We diagnose the actual source before recommending any repair.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Toyotas in the Salt Lake Valley.
Toyota engines are built around specific oil grades and change intervals. Full synthetic at the correct viscosity, changed at Toyota's recommended interval (typically 7,500–10,000 miles), is one of the most effective investments in long-term engine life. If you do a lot of mountain driving, towing, or stop-and-go in Salt Lake traffic, shorter intervals are worth it.
Toyota AWD and 4WD models — 4Runner, Tacoma, RAV4 AWD, Highlander AWD — have differential and transfer case fluid that degrades faster than engine oil. Factory intervals assume mostly highway driving. If your Toyota sees regular off-road use, winter conditions, or towing on canyon grades, shorten those fluid change intervals.
Toyota cooling systems are reliable, but coolant degrades over time and loses its corrosion inhibitors. Internal rust and thermostat housing failure follow from running degraded coolant too long. A coolant flush at the manufacturer's interval — or every 30,000 miles if you're not sure when it was last done — prevents those problems.
Hybrid Toyota owners: noticeable fuel economy decline is often the first sign of a battery pack losing capacity. If your Prius, RAV4 Hybrid, or Camry Hybrid isn't getting the economy it used to, it's worth having the hybrid battery tested before the problem progresses to a full system warning light.

What Our Customers Say
Real reviews from Google — 5 stars across the board
“Great shop! Knowledgeable staff. Fast service! They always make time for the unexpected repairs that need to be fixed quickly.”
“Scott has always preferred good work on my vehicles. I had his shop replace the driveline on my 2014 VW Touareg — not an easy job. The cost was cheaper than another shop. They did a great job. I had them rebuild the alternator because it was too cold for me to do it. The cost was better than I thought. I am very pleased with their work. Scott has always given me good solid advice.”
“I just had my transmission rebuilt by Scott's auto and they did an amazing job for a good price. My car has not run this well for three years — would definitely recommend.”
“This was my second time using Scott's. The power steering went out in my truck. Scott got it in that day and had it fixed in a couple of hours. I couldn't recommend this shop more!”
