Why Toyota Tundra Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
A full-size truck at a Toyota dealer means $150-plus per hour and a service writer between you and the mechanic. At Scott's, the same mechanic who diagnoses your Tundra is the one who turns the wrenches on it. You get a straight answer about what your truck needs and a written estimate before anything happens.
We Know Toyota Truck V8s
From the 4.7L 2UZ to the 5.7L 3UR, we've serviced Tundra V8s for years. We know the timing belt intervals on the older 4.7L and the maintenance these engines need to clear 250,000 miles.
Towing and Load Wear Specialists
Tundras that tow and haul wear brakes, suspension, and exhaust harder than trucks that just commute. We inspect for load-related wear and tell you what's actually due.
Honest Assessment on Frame Rust
First-gen and early second-gen Tundras can develop frame corrosion. We give you a frank, no-pressure evaluation of whether your truck's underbody is sound.
Free Diagnosis on Every Tundra
We road test, scan for codes, and inspect your truck before recommending anything. You know what's wrong and what it costs before we start — no diagnostic fee.
When to Bring Your Toyota Tundra In
We've serviced Toyota Tundras at our South Salt Lake shop for years — from early 4.7L V8 trucks to the current twin-turbo generation. When a Tundra comes in, we road test it under load when we can, scan for any stored codes, and do a full underbody and brake inspection before recommending anything. The issues below are the ones we see most often on these trucks. Bring yours in and we'll tell you exactly what's going on at no charge.
Timing Belt on the 4.7L V8 (1999–2006)
The 2UZ-FE 4.7L V8 in first-gen Tundras is timing-belt driven, and the belt needs replacement around 90,000 miles. It's an interference engine — if the belt breaks, valves and pistons collide and the repair gets very expensive. While we're in there, we replace the water pump, tensioner, and idlers since they're already exposed. We service this belt the right way, with quality parts.
Learn more →Front Brake Wear from Towing and Hauling
Tundras carry a lot of weight, and the front brakes do most of the stopping. Trucks used for towing trailers or hauling loads wear pads and rotors faster than a daily-driver truck. Common signs are a pulsing pedal, longer stopping distances, or a grinding sound. We replace pads and rotors with parts rated for truck duty, not the cheapest box on the shelf.
Learn more →Water Pump Failure on High-Mileage V8s
The water pump on Tundra V8s is a wear item. A failing pump may weep coolant from the weep hole, make a bearing whine, or let the temperature creep up while towing or climbing a grade. On the 4.7L it's smart to replace the pump during the timing belt job. On the 5.7L we inspect it as part of any cooling-system service. Catching it early avoids an overheat that can warp heads.
Learn more →Exhaust Corrosion and Manifold Leaks
Utah road salt and the heat cycling a working truck goes through take a toll on the exhaust. We see rusted-through pipes, leaking exhaust manifold gaskets, and failed flex sections on higher-mileage Tundras. A leak can sound like a tick that gets louder under acceleration. We repair or replace the affected section so your truck runs quiet and clean.
Learn more →Worn Shocks and Tired Suspension
A truck that hauls weight and runs Utah's rough roads wears out shocks. Signs include a bouncy ride over bumps, nose dive when braking, or the rear sagging under a load. Worn shocks also accelerate tire wear. We inspect the full suspension and replace shocks in axle pairs so the truck rides level and predictable.
Learn more →Check Engine Light — Emissions and Sensor Codes
As Tundras age, oxygen sensors and other emissions-related components set check engine codes that can also cause a Utah emissions test failure. We scan for codes, verify the actual root cause, and fix what genuinely needs fixing rather than just clearing the light. We'll tell you straight what it'll take to pass.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. We're not a chain, and there's no service-advisor layer between you and the work — the mechanic who diagnoses your Tundra is the one who repairs it. For a truck you depend on for work, that direct accountability matters.
We've serviced Tundras across every generation — first-gen 4.7L trucks still earning their keep, 5.7L second-gen haulers with 200,000-plus miles, and the newer twin-turbo trucks. Whether your Tundra needs a timing belt, brakes, suspension, or just an honest look before a big tow, you'll get a clear assessment and a written estimate before we start.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Toyota Tundras in the Salt Lake Valley.
If you tow with your Tundra into the canyons, have the brake fluid checked and flushed every 2–3 years. Long downhill grades like Parley's or Provo Canyon heat up brake fluid, and old fluid that's absorbed moisture can boil, leaving you with a soft pedal exactly when you need the brakes most.
Utah road salt is hard on truck frames and exhaust. Rinse the underbody after winter storms, especially around the frame rails and brake lines, and have us inspect for corrosion every fall before the salt season starts.
Watch the transmission fluid if you tow at altitude. Climbing grades with a trailer in the summer heat loads the transmission and cooks the fluid. A fluid service on schedule — sooner if you tow heavy — is cheap insurance against an expensive transmission repair.
