Full-Service Ram Truck Repair Since 1990
Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has serviced Ram trucks in South Salt Lake since 1990 — 1500s, 2500s, 3500s, and ProMaster vans across gas and diesel powertrains. We handle cylinder deactivation system diagnosis and repair, transmission fluid service for towing applications, diesel EGR and emissions system repair, rear axle seals and differential service, and the full range of maintenance Ram trucks need when they're working hard. Every Ram gets a free diagnosis before we recommend any work — you'll know exactly what we found, what the repair costs, and why it's needed.

Why Ram Drivers Choose Scott's
Ram dealers in Salt Lake Valley have high service department overhead, and truck owners towing fifth wheels or work trailers often face sticker shock on transmission and drivetrain service. The ZF 8-speed in Ram 1500 is a capable unit but the factory 'lifetime' fluid recommendation doesn't account for Utah mountain towing. At Scott's, we service it every 25,000 miles for trucks that tow regularly, saving you a $3,500+ transmission rebuild down the road. The Hemi lifter collapse is a serious issue — we diagnose it correctly before recommending an engine teardown, and we're honest when a lifter job can be deferred safely.
Ram Truck Specialists
Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks are a core part of our work. Whether you're running a Cummins diesel or a Hemi gas engine, we understand what Ram trucks need — especially towing in Utah's mountains.
Tow-Duty Service Specs
Ram's standard service intervals assume light-duty use. Utah towing conditions require shorter transmission fluid, differential, and oil change intervals. We advise based on how you actually use your truck.
Same-Day When Possible
Most Ram services and many repairs are completed the same day. Larger drivetrain jobs are scheduled promptly with honest timelines.
Straight Talk
Ram trucks have well-known common issues. We diagnose before recommending — Hemi tick, MDS failures, exhaust manifold bolts — you'll know exactly what's wrong before we quote.
When to Bring Your Ram In
A persistent tick or clatter from the top of a Ram V8 that doesn't clear after the engine fully warms up is worth diagnosing sooner rather than later. The cylinder deactivation system uses lifters that are a known wear point, and Utah's cold winters make the problem worse — cold oil takes time to circulate, and repeated cold starts without the engine reaching full operating temperature puts extra stress on these components. If your Ram has been ticking for more than a few weeks, a diagnostic visit now is much less expensive than the camshaft damage that follows a collapsed lifter.
Ram 2500 and 3500 owners running I-15 grades with a fifth wheel or gooseneck put real stress on rear axle seals and transmission fluid. Axle seal failure lets gear oil contaminate the braking surfaces on the rear axle — it's a safety concern, not just a maintenance item, and the leak usually starts slow enough that owners miss it until braking performance changes. Diesel owners should watch for white exhaust smoke at startup, slow coolant loss without a visible external leak, or rough idle at operating temperature — these are the early signs of an EGR cooler starting to fail, and addressing it early costs significantly less than waiting for a full failure.
Who to Trust for Ram Truck Repair in South Salt Lake
Scott's has worked on Dodge and Ram trucks since 1990, through every generation of the platform. We understand what Utah's demanding terrain does to drivetrain components — towing Wasatch mountain grades on I-15 in summer heat or fighting canyon road grades on US-6 puts real stress on transmissions, brakes, and cooling systems. We know what to look for.
Ram owners from across Salt Lake Valley bring their trucks to Scott's because we speak their language. We know the difference between an MDS lifter tick and a collapsed lifter, and we won't recommend a $6,000 engine job when a fluid change and injector cleaning will do. You get straight answers and fair pricing.
How We Work With Ram Drivers
FCA/Stellantis Diagnostic Scan
We use professional scan tools covering Ram's full module set — TIPM, transfer case, ABS, and transmission — to read accurate fault codes before any repair recommendation.
Hemi Lifter and MDS Assessment
On Hemi-equipped Ram 1500 models, we evaluate lifter noise, check for MDS-related codes, and assess oil pressure before recommending engine work.
Drivetrain and Axle Fluid Inspection
We check rear axle seal condition, differential fluid level, and ZF transmission fluid condition — especially on trucks used for towing.
Repair with ATF+4 and Mopar-Spec Fluids
ZF 8-speed service uses ATF+4 only. Axle seals and differential fluids use Mopar-specified products. We don't cut corners on fluids that protect expensive drivetrain components.
Load Test and Final Road Check
Trucks used for towing get an extra-thorough post-repair road test including brake check and transmission engagement verification under load simulation.

Frequently Asked Questions — Ram Repair
My Ram Hemi is ticking and has a misfire. What's the repair?
This is almost certainly a collapsed MDS lifter—the most common failure on 2014+ Ram 5.7L Hemis. We replace all 16 lifters and recommend MDS delete to prevent recurrence. The repair typically runs $2,500–$3,500 and eliminates the failure point.
How long do Ram transmissions last with towing?
The ZF 8-speed in modern Rams is actually very durable with proper maintenance. Change ATF+4 fluid every 25,000 miles if you tow regularly in Utah mountains. Skip fluid changes and you're looking at premature torque converter failure.
Is the Ram EcoDiesel reliable?
The 3.0L EcoDiesel has had several issues—EGR cooler failures, fuel pump problems, and emissions system complexity. With proper maintenance and timely repairs, they can be reliable. But repair costs are higher than the Hemi, so budget accordingly.
Common Ram Repairs
Hemi MDS Lifter Repair
The 5.7L Hemi lifter collapse is one of the most common Ram 1500 repairs. We diagnose and replace failed MDS lifters before damage spreads to camshaft lobes. View serviceBrake Service
Ram trucks used for towing experience heavy brake wear on I-15 grades. We replace pads, rotors, and drums — and check for axle seal contamination on rear drum setups. View serviceExhaust & EGR Service
EcoDiesel 3.0L EGR cooler failure causes coolant loss and white smoke. We replace EGR coolers and inspect the entire exhaust system for corrosion damage. View serviceSuspension & Strut Service
Ram truck suspension takes a beating with Utah's rough terrain and heavy loads. We replace struts, shocks, and leaf spring hardware to restore proper handling. View serviceShock Replacement
Ram 2500 and 3500 rear shocks wear quickly with fifth-wheel towing. We replace with quality units rated for Ram's payload capacity. View serviceFrame & Exhaust Welding
Utah road salt attacks Ram truck frames and exhaust systems. We weld cracked exhaust hangers, manifold flanges, and perform structural frame repairs. View serviceCV Joint & Front Axle Repair
4WD Ram trucks develop front CV joint and axle seal wear. We replace boots, joints, and axle seals to maintain 4WD engagement. View serviceRam Maintenance Tips for Utah Drivers
Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Rams in the Salt Lake Valley.
Ram Hemi trucks used for towing should have transmission fluid (ATF+4) changed every 25,000 miles. Canyon towing in Utah generates extreme transmission heat.
Ram 1500 air suspension systems need spring inspection every 2 years. Utah UV exposure degrades the rubber bladders faster than northern states.
Ram EcoDiesel owners: change fuel filters every 15,000 miles in Utah. Our diesel fuel can contain more particulates than coastal states.
