Ram Dakota Repair in Salt Lake City, UT
The Dodge and Ram Dakota was the mid-size truck that bridged the gap between compact pickups and full-size haulers — and a lot of them are still running hard in Utah. At Scott's we've worked on Dakotas from the first-gen 1987 four-bangers through the final 2011 crew cabs, and we keep parts available for all of them.
Full-Service Ram Dakota Repair — All Generations
We service all Dodge and Ram Dakota generations at our South Salt Lake shop — every engine, cab style, and drivetrain configuration. Every visit starts with a free diagnosis before any repair is recommended.

Why Ram Dakota Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
The Dakota has a loyal following in Utah — they're capable, reasonably sized for canyon and trail access, and parts availability through quality aftermarket suppliers is still strong. At Scott's, we've been working on these trucks since they were new, and we give you straightforward service without the upselling that tends to happen when someone hasn't seen a platform in a while.
Dakota Experience Across All Three Generations
From the carbureted 1st gen through the 4.7 V8 third-gen, we've worked on every Dakota variant. Different engine families, different transmission setups — we know which issues are generation-specific.
Manual Transmission and Clutch Specialists
Manual-transmission Dakotas — NV1500, NV2500, and A578 applications — are regular clutch customers at our shop. We carry quality clutch kits for all Dakota manual setups.
Affordable Repairs on an Older Platform
Parts availability for Dakotas through quality aftermarket suppliers is strong, which keeps repair costs reasonable. We don't use that as an excuse to over-repair — we fix what needs fixing.
Free Diagnosis, No Exceptions
We road test your Dakota, pull codes, and give you a written estimate before any work starts. No diagnostic fee on any vehicle we service.
When to Bring Your Ram Dakota In
Dakotas that have accumulated 150,000 or 200,000 miles in Utah have a predictable set of failure points that we've seen enough times to diagnose efficiently. If your Dakota is showing any of the symptoms below, bring it in — we'll get to the bottom of it for free.
Clutch Slip and Grinding Shifts — Manual Dakotas
Manual Dakota clutches on trucks used for towing or moderate off-road use wear out well before 100,000 miles in some cases. The NV1500 and NV2500 transmissions are robust, but the clutch pack takes the punishment. Slipping at highway speeds, difficulty engaging first gear, or grinding when downshifting are classic worn clutch symptoms.
Learn more →Exhaust Tick — Manifold Cracks
The 4.7 V8 and 3.9 V6 Dakota engines share the same cast iron manifold cracking issue found across the Chrysler/Dodge truck lineup. The tick at cold startup that quiets down after warmup is a classic cracked manifold symptom. We inspect both manifolds and replace what's actually cracked.
Learn more →Brake Squeal and Pedal Fade
High-mileage Dakotas — especially those used for towing or trail driving — wear front brakes faster than lightly-used examples. Rear drum brakes on earlier generations can develop self-adjuster seizure from infrequent use. We inspect the full brake system and repair whatever is causing the symptom.
Learn more →Check Engine Light and Emissions Failures
Older Dakotas are a common sight at Utah emissions test failures — EGR codes, O2 sensor faults, and catalytic converter efficiency codes are all routine on high-mileage examples. We diagnose the actual cause rather than just clearing codes or swapping parts based on the code alone.
Learn more →Bouncy Ride — Worn Shocks
An older Dakota that's been used for trail access, ranch roads, or towing will have worn shocks well before most owners check them. Excessive bounce after bumps, rear end sway, and a wallowy feel on the highway are the signs. We replace shocks with quality units appropriate for your truck's use.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Ram Dakotas in the Salt Lake Valley.
4.7 V8 oil change interval: the 4.7 PowerTech V8 in 2nd and 3rd gen Dakotas is a durable engine when maintained, but it develops sludge problems faster than most V8s when oil changes are neglected. Don't stretch changes past 5,000 miles with conventional oil. If you're buying a used 3rd-gen Dakota, check the underside of the oil cap for sludge before you commit.
Utah emissions prep for older Dakotas: if your older Dakota has a check engine light on, fix it before heading to the emissions station. Utah's program will fail any vehicle with a stored fault code, regardless of what the code is for. Common pre-emissions repairs on Dakotas include EGR valve cleaning, O2 sensor replacement, and catalytic converter verification. Bring it in before your registration deadline.
Rear drum brake adjustment on 1st and 2nd gen Dakotas: rear drums on early Dakotas have self-adjusters that seize from lack of use — particularly on trucks that do mostly highway miles with little hard braking. When the self-adjuster seizes, the rear brakes do progressively less work and the fronts carry too much of the load. Have the rear drums inspected and adjusted if your Dakota is pulling to one side under braking or the front pads are wearing faster than normal.
