Why Ram 1500 Drivers Choose Scott's Auto

Ram 1500 owners come to Scott's because dealer service advisors hand your truck to a technician you never meet and charge $160 an hour for the privilege. At Scott's, one mechanic diagnoses your truck and completes the repair — the same person, start to finish. We've been doing this since 1990, and Ram trucks are a regular fixture in our bays. You get a plain-language explanation of what we found, a written estimate, and nothing starts until you approve it.

35 Years Working on Dodge and Ram Trucks

We've been servicing Ram and Dodge trucks since Scott's opened in 1990. Every engine family from the 318 Magnum to the 5.7 Hemi and the 3.6 Pentastar is familiar ground for us.

Clutch Specialists for Manual 1500s

Manual Ram 1500 clutch jobs — including the NV3500 and NV4500 transmissions — are among our core services. We carry quality clutch kits for older manual-equipped Rams and know the correct procedures for each application.

Free Diagnosis on Every Visit

We road test, pull codes, and do a full inspection before recommending any repair. You know what's wrong and what it costs before a wrench turns. No diagnostic fee.

No Upselling on Truck Services

We tell you what your Ram needs and what can safely wait. If a repair isn't urgent, we say so and note it for your next visit. That's the only way we've built a customer base that's been coming back for decades.

When to Bring Your Ram 1500 In

We've serviced Ram 1500 trucks across every generation at our South Salt Lake location — from 318 Magnum V8s to Hemi trucks to current eTorque models. When a Ram comes in, we road test it, pull codes if the check engine light is on, and do a thorough inspection before recommending anything. The issues below are the ones we see most often on the 1500. If your truck is showing any of these symptoms, bring it in.

Exhaust Noise — Manifold Cracks and Leaks

The 5.7 Hemi is notorious for cracked exhaust manifolds — Utah's temperature swings from winter cold to summer heat accelerate the cast-iron fatigue that causes cracks. You'll hear a ticking or tapping at startup that often quiets down once the manifold warms and expands. Left alone, the leak gets worse and can damage nearby components. We inspect both manifolds and gaskets and replace what's actually failed.

Soft or Low Brake Pedal

High-mileage Ram 1500s with heavy payloads or trailer towing put serious heat into the brake system. Rear brake calipers can seize from infrequent use and corrosion, causing uneven wear and a soft pedal. Front rotors on the 4th and 5th gen 1500 can warp under repeated heavy braking. We inspect the full brake system — pads, rotors, calipers, and brake fluid condition — and give you an honest assessment.

Timing Chain Noise on 5.7 Hemi

High-mileage 5.7 Hemi engines — particularly those with infrequent oil changes — can develop timing chain stretch. The signature symptom is a brief metallic rattle on cold startup that fades as oil pressure builds. Don't wait: a worn chain can jump a tooth and cause significant internal damage. We inspect the chain, tensioner, and guides and replace them before a small problem turns expensive.

Rough or Bouncy Ride — Worn Shocks

Ram 1500s used for towing, hauling, or off-road use wear shocks faster than light-duty commuter trucks. When the factory shocks give out, you'll feel it — excessive body roll, a bouncing rear end after bumps, or a nose-dive under braking. We replace shocks and struts with quality aftermarket units rated for the actual use your truck sees.

Check Engine Light — Catalytic Converter Codes

Ram 1500s with the 5.7 Hemi can trigger P0420 or P0430 codes from catalytic converter efficiency failures, especially on higher-mileage examples. Before replacing cats, we verify the O2 sensor readings and rule out upstream issues like exhaust leaks that can produce false converter codes. We replace only what's actually failed.

CV Axle Clicking — 4WD Models

Four-wheel-drive Ram 1500s that see regular off-road or gravel-road use can wear CV joints faster than highway trucks. The tell-tale clicking on turns — especially noticeable in parking lots — points to a worn CV joint. We replace the complete axle shaft for a durable long-term repair rather than just repacking the boot.

Who to Trust for Ram 1500 Repair in South Salt Lake

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. We're not a chain, and there's no service advisor layer between you and the mechanic. The person who diagnoses your Ram 1500 is the same person who repairs it — which means you get direct answers and someone accountable for the work from start to finish.

We've worked on Ram trucks across every generation — Magnum-era second-gens with 200,000 miles, Hemi 4th-gen crew cabs, and current 5th-gen eTorque models. Whether your truck needs a clutch job, a timing chain, an exhaust repair, or an honest second opinion on a quote you got elsewhere, call us at (801) 485-4089 and we'll tell you exactly where things stand.

How We Work With Ram 1500 Drivers

1

Tell Us What Your Ram Is Doing

Noise, warning light, pull under braking, hard shift — describe what you're experiencing and when it happens. The more detail you give us, the faster the diagnosis.

2

Free Diagnostic Inspection

We road test your Ram 1500, pull any stored fault codes, check fluids, and inspect the system the symptom points to — before recommending a single repair.

3

Plain-Language Explanation

We explain what we found in plain English, not shop jargon. You get a written estimate for exactly what needs to be done and why, before any work begins.

4

Only the Work Your Truck Needs

We don't add on services your Ram doesn't need. If something can safely wait, we tell you — and note it so you can plan for it next time.

5

Road Test and Pickup Walkthrough

We verify the repair under real driving conditions before you arrive. At pickup we walk through what was done, what to watch for, and any upcoming maintenance to keep in mind.

Ram 1500 Maintenance Tips for Utah Drivers

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Ram 1500s in the Salt Lake Valley.

Oil change intervals on the 5.7 Hemi: Utah's elevation means your Hemi works harder on mountain grades than it would at sea level. If you're regularly towing or hauling — especially on I-15 grades up to Provo or I-80 over the Wasatch — don't stretch oil changes past 5,000 miles with conventional oil. The Hemi's MDS (cylinder deactivation) system is sensitive to oil quality; fresh oil keeps the lifters and solenoids happy longer.

Brake fluid service on tow rigs: if your Ram 1500 regularly pulls a trailer on Utah mountain passes, heat cycles through the brake system are severe. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can cause brake fade on long downhill grades. Replace brake fluid every two years — it's inexpensive and keeps your stopping power consistent on the kind of terrain Utah actually has.

Winter 4WD engagement: if your Ram 1500 sits unused in 2WD all summer and fall, engage 4WD at least once a month during the off-season — even just for a short loop around the block. Dormant 4WD systems can develop vacuum line issues and front axle engagement problems from lack of use. Keeping the system exercised prevents a nasty surprise when the first snowstorm hits the Salt Lake Valley.
