Utah elevation and timing belts: the high-altitude, low-humidity environment in Salt Lake City doesn't accelerate rubber timing belt degradation the way coastal humidity does — but heat cycling from cold mountain mornings to hot valley afternoons does. Don't stretch your XC90's timing belt interval beyond the manufacturer's mileage or age limit, whichever comes first. Age matters as much as mileage for rubber components.
XC90 coolant type matters: the first-generation XC90 uses a specific OAT coolant formula. Using the wrong coolant chemistry can cause electrolytic corrosion in the aluminum cooling system over time. If your coolant has ever been topped off with the wrong type, a full flush and refill is cheap insurance against a much more expensive repair later.
Pre-canyon-trip brake check: if you're heading up Big Cottonwood or Little Cottonwood Canyon with a loaded XC90, have your brakes inspected first if it's been more than a year. A fully loaded five-passenger SUV descending 2,000 feet of canyon road puts real thermal stress on brake pads and rotors.
