Volvo 940 Repair in Salt Lake City, UT
The Volvo 940 was the last of the great rear-wheel-drive Volvos — a tank-built family car with a turbo variant that surprised a lot of people with its performance. We service 940s at our South Salt Lake shop, from clean low-mileage examples to working 940 wagons with serious miles and deferred maintenance to catch up on.
Full-Service Volvo 940 Repair — All Generations
We service all Volvo 940 variants at our South Salt Lake shop — 940, 940 Turbo, sedan and wagon, naturally aspirated and the B230FT turbocharged models. Every visit starts with a free inspection so you know what your 940 needs before anything is touched.

Why Volvo 940 Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
The 940 shares the B230 engine architecture with the 240 and 740, which means we know it inside and out. But the 940 also brought refinements — a more sophisticated fuel injection system, updated suspension geometry, and on turbo models, a revised turbocharger setup. At Scott's, the 940 is a familiar car. We won't send you to a Volvo specialist for something we've done dozens of times.
B230 Engine Family Across All Variants
The naturally aspirated B230F and turbocharged B230FT engines in the 940 are ones we've worked on in multiple Volvo generations. The 940 variants are specific, but the fundamentals are deeply familiar.
Turbo 940 Maintenance and Repair
The 940 Turbo's Garrett T3 setup has known maintenance requirements around oil feed lines, intercooler hose clamps, and boost solenoids. We service turbocharged 940s regularly and know the failure patterns that come with deferred maintenance.
Rear-Wheel-Drive Suspension and Driveline
Unlike the front-wheel-drive 850, the 940 has a conventional RWD layout — solid rear axle on wagons, independent on late sedans. We know the specific wear points and source quality suspension components.
Free Inspection Before Any Recommendation
Every 940 that comes into our shop gets a thorough look before we quote anything. No inspection fee, no pressure.
When to Bring Your Volvo 940 In
940s that come into our South Salt Lake shop run the full spectrum — meticulously maintained one-owner cars to wagons with 200,000 miles and a long list of deferred items. We approach every one the same: road test, inspect, and give the owner a straight picture of what's there. The items below are what we see most consistently on 940s in the Salt Lake area.
Timing Belt Service — Don't Skip It
The B230 and B230FT are interference engines. A timing belt failure means bent valves and a major engine repair — far more expensive than a belt kit. The 940's interval is 50,000 miles, but age matters equally: a belt that's six or seven years old is at risk regardless of mileage. We do the complete service — belt, tensioner, and water pump — and stamp the work with the date and mileage for your records.
Learn more →Exhaust System Repair
The 940's long exhaust run — especially on wagon models — develops manifold gasket leaks, cracked flex joints, and rotten mufflers as it ages. Utah's dry winters with road salt hit the underside hard. A sudden loud exhaust sound on a 940 means something in the system has failed. We repair by section when practical, or replace the full system when the damage warrants it.
Learn more →Turbo System Service on 940 Turbo
The 940 Turbo's T3 turbocharger depends entirely on clean engine oil. Turbo bearing wear is the most common failure mode, and it almost always traces back to extended oil change intervals or low oil level. We check the turbo oil supply and return lines for blockage and inspect the intercooler hose clamps — a loose clamp at boost is a hard no-start diagnosis waiting to happen.
Learn more →Clutch Replacement on Manual 940s
Manual 940s — turbo models in particular — have specific clutch wear characteristics when driven on Utah's mountain roads. The long grades on I-15 to Provo and the canyon runs to Snowbird put real heat into clutch components. High engagement point, slipping on the grade, or a burning smell after a demanding drive all mean it's time. We source quality clutch kits and do the full job.
Learn more →Shock Absorber Wear
940 wagons loaded with Utah ski gear, camping equipment, or contractor supplies wear rear shocks faster than sedans. The handling becomes progressively worse — floating on the freeway, nose-diving under braking, and squirming on rough pavement. We replace shocks in axle pairs and align the car afterward if the suspension geometry needs correction.
Learn more →Brake System Service
940 front brakes carry the majority of the braking load, and the caliper slides corrode in Utah's road-salt environment. A car that pulls to one side under braking or has a pedal that slowly sinks has a brake system problem that needs a thorough inspection. We cover pads, rotors, caliper function, and brake fluid condition in a single visit.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair opened in 1990 — the same year the 940 arrived in the United States. We've been an independent, single-location shop on the same South Salt Lake address ever since. No franchise, no service advisor layer. The mechanic who inspects your 940 does the repair, and you talk directly to that person from start to finish.
940 owners tend to be pragmatic — they chose the car because it's durable, fixable, and worth keeping. We approach the car the same way. Whether yours needs a timing belt, turbo service, an exhaust repair, or a comprehensive going-over after sitting through the winter, come in. We'll give you a straight picture of what's there and a written estimate before we touch anything.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Volvo 940s in the Salt Lake Valley.
Turbo 940 oil discipline: the B230FT turbocharger bearing is lubricated by engine oil under pressure. Let the car idle for 30–60 seconds before shutting off after a hard run — the turbo stays hot after the engine stops, and oil sitting in a hot bearing cokes if you cut the ignition immediately after driving hard. This is especially relevant after canyon driving or long freeway runs in Utah's summer heat.
Timing belt age matters more than mileage on low-use 940s: a 940 that's been sitting in a garage with 65,000 miles on a 12-year-old timing belt is at higher risk than a 940 at 95,000 miles with a belt replaced four years ago. The rubber on these old belts degrades from heat cycles and ozone exposure even when the car isn't being driven. Check the belt service date, not just the mileage.
Winter preparation for 940 wagons: the 940 wagon is a legitimate winter tool on Utah roads, but the rear differential fluid and transmission fluid on these older cars benefit from a change before the first hard cold snap. Old gear oil thickens in sub-zero temperatures and makes shifting sluggish until the drivetrain warms up. Fresh fluid is cheap; a cracked differential housing from cold sluggish oil is not.

“I was in a bind and Scott got me in last minute and did some really quality work on my Subaru for a great price. Scott is a very honest and hardworking mechanic and I'm super grateful for his help! Highly recommend this place.”

“Honest mechanic shop. Services exhaust and gets it right the first time.”
“I had a pretty good experience. They got me in pretty quick. They did work on my 2014 Chevy Tahoe LT — replaced my 2 front oxygen sensors, changed the front windshield washer fluid pump, and did a coolant flush. They allowed me to bring my own parts and coolant, which I really appreciated. Done for a fair price. Would come back.”
