Coolant system maintenance on aging Phaetons: U.S.-market Phaetons are now 20 years old at minimum. Rubber coolant hoses, plastic water pump housings, and coolant expansion tanks all degrade with age regardless of mileage. If your Phaeton hasn't had a full cooling system inspection in the past five years, schedule one before Utah summer arrives — a coolant failure in July is far worse than finding an aging hose in the shop.
Oil quality matters on the Phaeton W12: the W12 engine is a complex piece of engineering with demanding lubrication requirements. Use only the oil grade specified in your owner's manual and don't stretch change intervals past 7,500 miles. The cost of a quart of correct-specification synthetic oil is trivial compared to the cost of any significant W12 internal repair.
Utah emissions and vintage Phaetons: 1968-and-newer vehicles registered in Salt Lake County require emissions testing. A Phaeton with aging oxygen sensors or small exhaust leaks may not pass — and with four O2 sensors on the V8, sensor failures are a when, not an if. Addressing a check engine light before your test date is always easier and cheaper than dealing with a failed test and a short retesting window.
