Tight valves are a common cause of hard starting, rough idle, and eventual valve seat damage. This is an inexpensive service that most shops skip on vintage vehicles — don't let it go.
Rust inspection: Utah road salt corrodes Samurai frame rails and body mounts, especially on the underside. Before winter, inspect the frame crossmembers and body mount points for rust bubbling or perforation. Catching rust early — a wire brush and rust-inhibiting primer — is far cheaper than welded frame repairs later.
Cooling system: the small-displacement engines in Samurais run hot in Utah summers, especially when crawling trails at low speed with limited airflow. Flush the coolant every two years, verify the thermostat opens at the correct temperature, and keep an eye on the temperature gauge on hot days.
