Scion xD Maintenance Tips for Utah Drivers

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Scion xDs in the Salt Lake Valley.

2ZR-FE oil consumption: some 2ZR-FE engines — particularly in earlier model years — have a known tendency to consume small amounts of oil between changes. It's not always a sign of serious wear, but it means the oil level should be checked every 1,000–2,000 miles rather than just at oil change intervals. Keep a quart of 5W-30 in the trunk. Letting a small engine run low on oil accelerates wear significantly.

Winter tire use in the Salt Lake Valley: the xD is a light car, and light cars on all-season tires can be unpredictable on the snow and ice that comes off the Wasatch between November and March. If you drive canyons regularly or live in the Cottonwood Heights or Millcreek areas, a dedicated winter tire set is a worthwhile investment. Light cars with good winter tires outperform heavy cars on bad tires every time.
