Scion tC Repair in South Salt Lake, UT
The Scion tC is the sporty coupe of the Scion lineup — front-wheel-drive, manual-transmission-available, and driven by people who actually enjoy driving. These cars are popular in the Salt Lake Valley with younger enthusiasts who tend to put miles on them fast and drive them hard. We've serviced tCs at our South Salt Lake shop since the first generation arrived, and we know exactly where they wear.
Full-Service Scion tC Repair — All Generations
We service all Scion tC generations at our South Salt Lake shop — from the 2005–2010 ANT10 first generation through the 2011–2016 AGT20 second generation. Every visit starts with a free diagnosis so you know exactly what your tC needs before we touch it.

Why Scion tC Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
tC owners come to us after getting quoted dealer prices that don't reflect the actual value of the vehicle — and after reading online that a lot of shops won't touch a clutch on a Scion. Clutch replacement is one of our core services. We work on tCs regularly, we know the platform's quirks, and we give enthusiast car owners a straight answer without the runaround.
Clutch Specialists for Manual tC Owners
Clutch replacement is one of our core services, and we handle the tC's 6-speed manual transmission regularly. We carry quality OEM-spec clutch kits and know the tC's hydraulic clutch system thoroughly.
Timing Chain Service for the 2AR-FE
The 2.5L 2AR-FE engine in the second-generation tC uses a timing chain that requires attention at high mileage. We handle chain, tensioner, and guide replacement — the complete service, done correctly.
Enthusiast Car Experience
We work on sporty front-wheel-drive cars regularly. Modified suspension, aftermarket exhausts, lowered ride heights — we've seen it all and we don't penalize owners for tasteful modifications.
Free Diagnosis, Written Estimate
We road test your tC, pull stored codes, inspect what the symptom points to, and give you a written estimate before starting anything. No diagnostic fee.
When to Bring Your Scion tC In
The tC is a willing daily driver, but driven hard and maintained inconsistently — which is how many of them get used — certain wear items appear predictably. The issues below are the ones we see most often on tCs in our shop. If your car is showing any of these symptoms, come in for a free look.
Clutch Slipping or Hard Shifts on Manual tC
The tC's 6-speed manual is a fun gearbox, but clutches on cars driven aggressively or used for canyon runs can wear faster than the 100,000-mile mark. A clutch that slips under hard acceleration, a high engagement point where the clutch barely grabs before it's fully released, or grinding when hunting for a gear are all signs it's time. We replace the clutch disc, pressure plate, and throwout bearing, and inspect the flywheel and hydraulics.
Learn more →Timing Chain Rattle on 2AR-FE (2nd Gen)
The 2.5L 2AR-FE in the second-generation tC uses a timing chain that's susceptible to guide wear at high mileage — particularly on cars with stretched oil change intervals. A brief metallic rattle on cold startup that quiets once the engine warms is the classic symptom. We replace the chain, tensioner, and both guides as a complete service.
Learn more →CV Axle Clicking on Turns
Front-wheel-drive tCs with high mileage or driven through Utah's potholed winters develop CV axle wear. Clicking on low-speed turns — especially on tight parking lot maneuvers — is the outer CV joint telling you it's done. We replace the full axle shaft for a reliable repair.
Learn more →Brake Squealing and Wear
tC front brakes wear at a predictable rate — faster on driven cars. A squealing that happens every time you brake is the wear indicator contacting the rotor. Don't wait until it turns into grinding. We inspect pads, rotors, and calipers and give you a written estimate.
Learn more →Exhaust Noise — Aftermarket or OEM Issues
Many tCs have aftermarket exhausts, and some of them develop leaks at the header or mid-pipe connections. OEM exhausts develop manifold gasket leaks at high mileage. Either way, the symptom is a ticking or hissing under the hood. We inspect and repair both OEM and aftermarket exhaust systems.
Learn more →Check Engine Light
tC check engine lights frequently come from O2 sensor codes on high-mileage cars, evaporative emission system faults, or a catalyst efficiency code (P0420). We read the codes and trace the actual root cause — we don't just clear them and send you to emissions.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. We work on sporty front-wheel-drive cars regularly — the tC's manual transmission, clutch hydraulics, and 2AR-FE engine are familiar territory. The mechanic who diagnoses your car is the one who fixes it, and you deal directly with that person.
tC owners are often younger drivers who don't have a shop they trust yet, or who've gotten burned by chain shops that treat every car the same way. We give you a straight answer, an honest estimate, and work that's done right. If you have a tC in the South Salt Lake area and need a shop, come in — first visit gets a free inspection.

Written Estimate, Plain Language

Only What the Car Actually Needs
We don't upsell services on a budget enthusiast car. If something can wait, we'll tell you and note it for next time.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Scion tCs in the Salt Lake Valley.
Timing chain oil changes on 2nd-gen tC: the 2AR-FE engine's timing chain and guide wear is directly tied to oil change intervals. If you've been stretching oil changes to 8,000–10,000 miles on a 2011–2016 tC, shorten the interval to 5,000 miles — especially in Utah winters when cold starts put more stress on the chain before pressure builds. Synthetic oil is worth the upgrade on this engine.
Clutch break-in after replacement: a new clutch on a tC needs a proper break-in period — about 500 miles of normal driving without hard launches or slipping the clutch on purpose. The first 500 miles set the clutch disc's friction surface against the flywheel and pressure plate. Skipping break-in dramatically shortens clutch life. We'll walk you through the procedure when you pick up your car.
Utah emissions and P0420: the tC is subject to OBD-II emissions testing in Wasatch Front counties. A P0420 code (catalyst efficiency below threshold) is one of the most common reasons tCs fail emissions. Before replacing the catalytic converter — which is expensive — make sure the code isn't being caused by a faulty upstream O2 sensor, an exhaust leak before the sensor, or engine oil consumption that's fouling the catalyst. We diagnose the actual cause first.
