Scion iQ Repair in South Salt Lake, UT
The Scion iQ is one of the smallest four-seat cars ever sold in the US market — a 120-inch-long city car built on the Toyota iQ platform, with a 1.3L 1NR-FE engine and a CVT automatic as the only transmission option. These cars are quirky, fuel-efficient, and remarkably capable in tight urban environments. Our South Salt Lake shop services the iQ as part of our broader Toyota small-car work, and we treat these compact vehicles with the same attention we give any other car.
Full-Service Scion iQ Repair — All Generations
We service all Scion iQ models at our South Salt Lake shop — 2012 through 2015, with the 1.3L CVT drivetrain. Every visit starts with a free diagnosis so you know exactly what your iQ needs before we touch it.

Why Scion iQ Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
The iQ's small size can make some shops reluctant to work on it — finding the right parts, understanding the CVT service requirements, and working in the compact engine bay all take familiarity with the platform. We've worked on the Toyota iQ family and we don't find the size to be an obstacle. We give iQ owners the same honest service we give owners of larger vehicles.
Toyota Small-Car Platform Experience
The iQ's 1NR-FE engine and CVT are Toyota components we work with through other subcompact applications. The platform is unusual in size but not in mechanical complexity.
CVT Service Knowledge
The iQ's CVT requires specific fluid and service intervals that differ from a conventional automatic. We know the correct fluid specification and service procedure for this transmission.
City Car Brake and Suspension Expertise
City cars in Salt Lake City deal with a unique combination of stop-and-go traffic and high-speed highway commutes. We service the iQ's brakes and suspension with both use cases in mind.
Free Diagnosis, Written Estimate
We road test your iQ, pull stored codes, check fluid condition, and inspect what the symptom points to before recommending anything. No diagnostic fee.
When to Bring Your Scion iQ In
The iQ is a dependable city car, but brakes and CV axles wear in urban use, and the CVT requires proper fluid maintenance. The issues below are the ones we see most often on iQs in our shop. If yours is showing any of these symptoms, bring it in for a free inspection.
Brake Wear in Stop-and-Go Traffic
City cars spend most of their life in stop-and-go conditions, which means brakes wear at a faster rate per mile than highway-driven vehicles. The iQ's small brake system can feel spongy or soft when pads are worn. We inspect pads, rotors, calipers, and fluid condition — a complete brake service, not just a pad swap.
Learn more →CV Axle Clicking on Turns
Front-wheel-drive iQs with high mileage develop CV joint wear like any front-wheel-drive car. The clicking on low-speed turns is the outer CV joint wearing through its grease. We replace the complete axle shaft for a durable repair.
Learn more →Check Engine Light
iQ check engine lights commonly come from O2 sensor faults, evaporative emission codes, or catalyst efficiency issues on high-mileage cars. We pull the codes and trace the actual root cause before recommending parts.
Learn more →Exhaust System Service
The iQ's compact exhaust system is tucked tightly to the underside of the car, which makes exhaust manifold gasket leaks and flex connector deterioration more consequential. A ticking noise on cold starts is the typical symptom. We inspect the full system and repair what's causing the leak.
Learn more →Rough Ride — Worn Struts on High-Mileage iQ
The iQ's short wheelbase magnifies the effect of worn struts — a city car with worn suspension feels noticeably bouncy and imprecise even at low speeds. Strut replacement restores both ride quality and tire wear patterns.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Scion iQs in the Salt Lake Valley.
CVT fluid service on the iQ: the iQ's CVT uses Toyota's specific CVT fluid — using the wrong fluid type can damage the variator and belt assembly, which is an expensive repair. Change the fluid every 30,000–40,000 miles under normal use, more frequently if the car sees a lot of stop-and-go traffic. If you don't know when it was last done, assume it's overdue.
Short-trip driving and oil maintenance in Utah: the iQ's 1.3L engine runs warmer than larger engines relative to ambient temperature, but short trips in Salt Lake's winter — running to the grocery store and back — don't allow the engine to fully warm up. That means moisture and fuel can accumulate in the oil. Check the oil level and condition frequently in winter, and change it at 5,000 miles regardless of what the maintenance indicator says if you're doing mostly short trips.
Tire selection for a city car in Utah: the iQ uses small-diameter tires, and the selection of quality winter or all-season options in the iQ's size is more limited than for standard passenger cars. Plan tire purchases in advance — waiting until the first snow in October means limited availability and higher prices. A dedicated winter tire set on steel wheels is the best investment for the iQ in Salt Lake's winter.

What Our Customers Say
Real reviews from Google — 5 stars across the board
“Scott has always preferred good work on my vehicles. I had his shop replace the driveline on my 2014 VW Touareg — not an easy job. The cost was cheaper than another shop. They did a great job. I had them rebuild the alternator because it was too cold for me to do it. The cost was better than I thought. I am very pleased with their work. Scott has always given me good solid advice.”
“Very helpful, best price.”
“Scott is the best guy and best mechanic in Utah. He is also a great American. He is honest and does exceptional work.”
