Scion FR-S Repair in South Salt Lake, UT

The Scion FR-S is a rear-wheel-drive sports coupe jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru — the same car sold as the Subaru BRZ and later as the Toyota GR86. With a naturally aspirated 2.0L boxer engine, a slick 6-speed manual, and rear-wheel-drive dynamics, the FR-S is a genuine driver's car. It also gets driven the way it was designed to be driven, which means clutches, brakes, and exhaust systems see real use. Our South Salt Lake shop handles FR-S service regularly.

We service all Scion FR-S models at our South Salt Lake shop — 2013 through 2016, including both manual and automatic variants. Every visit starts with a free diagnosis so you know exactly what your FR-S needs before we touch it.

Why Scion FR-S Drivers Choose Scott's Auto

FR-S owners are a different kind of customer — they know their car, they care about it, and they don't want it touched by someone who treats it like a commuter. Clutch replacement is one of our core services, and we've done plenty of them on the ZN6 platform. We give FR-S owners a straight diagnostic, an honest estimate, and work done correctly — whether the car is stock or has tasteful modifications.

Rear-Wheel-Drive Sports Car Experience

The FR-S is a rear-wheel-drive sports coupe, and we service it as such. We understand how drivetrain components wear on a car that's used on canyon roads and occasional track days, and we estimate accordingly.

Clutch Specialists for the 6-Speed Manual

Clutch replacement is our core service, and the FR-S's 6-speed manual is a common job for us. We carry quality clutch kits for the FA20 drivetrain and know the correct procedure for this platform.

Brake Service for Driven Sports Cars

An FR-S used for track days or canyon driving goes through brakes faster than a commuter. We inspect the full system — pads, rotors, fluid condition, and caliper function — and give you a realistic picture.

Honest Service for Modified Cars

We don't penalize FR-S owners for aftermarket exhausts or suspension modifications. Tell us what's been done to the car so we can give you an accurate inspection.

When to Bring Your Scion FR-S In

The FR-S rewards spirited driving — and the drivetrain, brakes, and exhaust reflect whatever driving the car has seen. The issues below are the ones we see most consistently on FR-S models in our shop. If yours is showing any of these symptoms, bring it in for a free inspection.

Clutch Wear — 6-Speed Manual

The FR-S's 6-speed manual with the lighter flywheel is a genuinely fun drivetrain, but clutches wear faster on cars that see spirited use, canyon runs, or the occasional track event. A slipping clutch under hard acceleration, a high engagement point, or difficulty getting into gear are all signs. We carry quality clutch kits for the FA20 and know the correct procedure for this platform.

Brake Wear — Pads and Rotor Damage

Track use and spirited canyon driving burns through brake pads faster than the emissions-testing schedule suggests. A burning smell after aggressive braking, squealing during normal stops, or a pulsating brake pedal are signs the brakes need inspection. We service the full system and check for rotor damage caused by overheating.

Exhaust Leaks — Aftermarket and OEM

Many FR-S owners run aftermarket headers or cat-back exhausts, and aftermarket connections develop leaks at gaskets and slip joints. OEM exhaust manifold gaskets also develop leaks on high-mileage examples. We inspect and repair both aftermarket and stock exhaust systems.

Check Engine Light — O2 Sensor and Catalyst Codes

The FA20's direct injection and exhaust layout makes it susceptible to catalyst efficiency codes (P0420) — sometimes triggered by a genuinely failing cat, sometimes by an O2 sensor reading incorrectly after an exhaust modification. We read the codes, trace the actual root cause, and fix what needs fixing.

Strut and Suspension Wear

FR-S suspension components see real stress on canyon roads and track days. A car that feels imprecise or has lost its crisp turn-in response may have worn strut bushings or shock valving. We inspect the full suspension and give you an accurate assessment.

Scion FR-S Maintenance Tips for Utah Drivers

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Scion FR-Ss in the Salt Lake Valley.

Clutch break-in on the FR-S: after a clutch replacement, the FA20's lightweight flywheel requires a careful break-in period. Avoid hard launches, slipping the clutch on uphills, or aggressive starts for the first 500 miles. The lighter flywheel makes the FR-S more responsive but also means the clutch disc seats differently than on a heavier-flywheel car. We'll walk you through the specific break-in procedure when you pick up your car.

Brake fluid on a driven sports car: track days and canyon driving generate heat that pushes brake fluid beyond its boiling point if it's absorbed too much moisture. Brake fluid should be flushed annually if you run the car on track or use it aggressively in the canyons — not on the standard two-year passenger car schedule. A spongy pedal under hard braking is vapor lock from overheated fluid, and it's a warning you can't ignore at speed.

Utah canyon roads and tire condition: if you run your FR-S on Big Cottonwood or American Fork Canyon regularly, tire condition matters more than it does for a commuter. Check for uneven wear patterns that indicate alignment or suspension issues, and replace tires when tread is below 4/32" — track use and canyon driving require more grip reserve than city driving. At Utah's elevation, cold morning tire temps on the first run up the canyon mean the first few corners should be treated conservatively.

“Scott has always preferred good work on my vehicles. I had his shop replace the driveline on my 2014 VW Touareg — not an easy job. The cost was cheaper than another shop. They did a great job. I had them rebuild the alternator because it was too cold for me to do it. The cost was better than I thought. I am very pleased with their work. Scott has always given me good solid advice.”

“I have taken my vehicles to many other mechanics before I found this place. They are absolutely the best — they won't give you the run around, they won't expect you to go find a bolt they broke (yes, that happened to me once), they will give you peace of mind. I cannot stress enough how much better Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair is than the competition. Even if you like your mechanic now, give them a try and let them wow you.”
