Saab 9000 Repair in Salt Lake City, UT

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair in South Salt Lake services these cars and treats them with the seriousness they deserve.

Why Saab 9000 Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
The 9000 is a legitimate driver's car that has been underappreciated for decades. The B234 and B234R engines are strong, the platform is well-engineered, and the Aero variant in particular is a capable performance machine. We work on 9000s because we respect the engineering and understand that the owners who still have these cars care about keeping them right.
Turbo Knowledge on the B234 Engine
The 9000's B234 and B234R turbocharged engines are robust but specific in their maintenance needs. We know the boost system, the oil supply requirements, and the failure points that emerge at high mileage — and we don't guess when diagnosing.
Clutch Specialists
Manual 9000s — including the Aero — develop clutch wear with age and mileage. We do full clutch kit replacements with flywheel inspection and hydraulic system assessment as part of every clutch job.
Cooling System Depth
The 9000's cooling system has aging plastic components and thermostat housing failure patterns we've seen before. We pressure-test the system on every high-mileage 9000 rather than waiting for an overheating incident.
Free Diagnosis Before Any Work
We road-test, inspect, and pull codes before recommending a single repair. You get a written estimate and clear explanation before we begin — no charge for the diagnosis.
When to Bring Your Saab 9000 In
Scott's treats each 9000 visit as a comprehensive inspection — not a point-fix. High-mileage 9000s frequently have multiple deferred maintenance items, and addressing only the one you came in for while ignoring the others is a disservice. We road-test the car, check the turbo system, inspect the cooling system, and look over the suspension and brakes before giving you a prioritized written estimate. You decide what to do and when.
Turbo System — Boost Leaks and Bypass Valve
The 9000's turbo system is pressurized through an intercooler and a network of rubber hoses that crack and soften with age and heat. A failing bypass valve or a split intercooler hose causes a loss of boost that feels like sudden power reduction under hard acceleration. We pressure-test the full boost circuit, check the bypass valve, and inspect hose condition before assuming the turbo itself needs attention.
Learn more →Clutch and Flywheel Service
Manual 9000s — including the Aero — accumulate clutch wear with age. The friction disc typically shows slip under hard acceleration first, followed by a rising engagement point. On older cars the hydraulic master and slave cylinders can also be weeping. We replace the complete clutch kit and inspect the flywheel for cracks and heat checks — the flywheel on a performance-driven Aero is worth resurfacing rather than risking a new disc on a damaged surface.
Learn more →Cooling System — Thermostat Housing and Hoses
The 9000's cooling system uses a plastic thermostat housing and aging rubber hoses that develop cracks and slow leaks after decades of service. A leaking thermostat housing can empty the cooling system faster than you'd expect. We pressure-test the system, replace the housing and hoses as a logical group, and check water pump condition at the same time to avoid returning for the same job twice.
Learn more →Suspension — Front Struts and Bushings
The 9000's front suspension uses MacPherson struts that wear predictably at the strut bearing and lower control arm bushings. A clunking noise over bumps, vague steering feel, or uneven front tire wear are the common symptoms. Strut replacement on a 9000 restores the handling character that makes these cars enjoyable to drive — it's not just a safety fix.
Learn more →Failed Emissions — Catalytic Converter and O2 Sensors
Utah emissions testing catches aging 9000s regularly. The catalytic converter on a high-mileage 9000 may be below efficiency threshold even if the car runs well — and failed O2 sensors give incorrect feedback to the fuel management system, affecting both fuel economy and emissions. We diagnose the root cause of an emissions failure before recommending cat replacement, because an O2 sensor fix is often all that's needed.
Learn more →Brake Service
The 9000 — particularly the Aero — was engineered with strong brakes for its performance envelope. High-mileage cars need pad and rotor replacement, and the rear calipers are worth inspecting for slide pin corrosion in Utah's salt environment. We measure rotor thickness and runout, check caliper function, and replace brake fluid if it hasn't been done recently.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been in South Salt Lake since 1990 — the same years the 9000 was still a current Saab product. We're an independent shop with no service advisor layer and no corporate service menu to push. The technician who works on your 9000 is the person you talk to, and they're accountable for the diagnosis and the repair.
The 9000 community is small but committed, and owners of these cars don't need a shop that's going to look up 'Saab 9000' in a database and treat it like an unfamiliar oddity. We work on turbocharged European cars, we understand the B234 engine, and we're realistic about parts sourcing for a car that went out of production in 1998. If a repair makes sense, we'll do it well. If it doesn't, we'll tell you.
How We Work With Saab 9000 Drivers
Call or Stop By
Call (801) 485-4089 or visit our South Salt Lake shop. Let us know your 9000's year and variant — Turbo, CS, Aero — so we can be prepared.
Free Diagnosis
We road-test your 9000, inspect the turbo system and cooling system, pull any codes, and do a visual inspection under the car — all at no charge before recommending anything.
Prioritized Written Estimate
You receive a written estimate ranked by urgency. We explain what needs to happen now, what can wait, and what's worth watching over the next few months.
Repair With the Right Parts
We source quality parts through specialty suppliers and use the correct specifications for the 9000's systems. We don't substitute cheap generic components on a car that deserves better.
Road Test and Walkthrough
We drive the car after every repair to confirm it's right, then walk you through what was done at pickup and flag anything worth addressing at your next visit.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Saab 9000s in the Salt Lake Valley.
The B234 engine rewards clean oil — use full synthetic at a 5,000-mile interval and don't stretch it. The turbocharger bearing feeds directly from the engine oil supply, and a marginal oil change schedule on a high-mileage 9000 is the fastest way to shorten turbo life. After a hard run, let the engine idle for two minutes before shutdown.
Utah emissions testing is a real concern for older 9000s. If your car is approaching its biennial test, have the O2 sensor function and catalytic converter efficiency checked beforehand — failing the test and scrambling for repairs is more stressful and often more expensive than addressing it on your own schedule.
The 9000's aging rubber boost hoses between the turbo and intercooler can look fine on the outside while cracking internally. If you notice any reduction in power under hard acceleration — a feeling like the turbo is spooling then suddenly dropping off — have the boost circuit pressure-tested. A split hose found early is a cheap repair; running significantly overboosted or underboosted causes more expensive damage.

5-Star Reviews
What Our Customers Say
Real reviews from Google — 5 stars across the board
“This guy is the best! Not only did he get my car done the same day, but when I couldn't pull it all the way there he came and pulled it with his own truck and son. Then he even charged my air conditioning! I'm a single mom with no one to really help with car stuff. This means the world to me. Couldn't ask for better help!! Thank you so much you saved the day and more!!! And honest to boot.”
“My Ford F-150 needed a new Fuel Pump and a Timing Belt Replacement. Scott's Auto was very quick at diagnosing the problem and turning the truck around quickly. This is such a reliable, honest auto mechanic shop.”
“I had a pretty good experience. They got me in pretty quick. They did work on my 2014 Chevy Tahoe LT — replaced my 2 front oxygen sensors, changed the front windshield washer fluid pump, and did a coolant flush. They allowed me to bring my own parts and coolant, which I really appreciated. Done for a fair price. Would come back.”
