The original Saab 900 is a classic — distinctive, quirky, and surprisingly robust when the right shop takes care of it. At Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair in South Salt Lake, we service both the original 900 and the NG900 that succeeded it, and we enjoy working on these cars. If you've got a Saab 900 that needs mechanical attention and you want someone who'll treat it with respect, bring it in.

Why Saab 900 Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
Classic Saab 900 owners don't bring their cars to a shop that treats them like trade-in fodder. At Scott's, we take the 900 seriously as a vehicle worth maintaining. The B201 and B212 engines are simple, tough units — and the turbo variants are genuinely enjoyable cars when everything is working properly. We approach each 900 with patience and an understanding that parts may require sourcing from specialty suppliers.
Clutch and Gearbox Experience
The 900's front-wheel-drive layout places the gearbox ahead of the engine — an unusual arrangement that requires specific knowledge to service correctly. Clutch replacement on the 900 is not a standard procedure, and we've done it before.
Turbo Service on Classic Saabs
The original 900 Turbo was Saab's landmark product. We service the turbo system, bypass valve, and boost controls on these cars using the correct procedures for the vintage Garrett turbochargers fitted to early 900s.
Honest Parts Sourcing
Classic 900 parts require specialty sourcing. We're upfront about availability and lead times — we won't take your deposit and disappear into a parts vortex. If something isn't findable, we say so.
Free Diagnosis on Every Visit
We inspect and road-test your 900 before recommending anything. You get a written estimate and a plain-language explanation before work begins.
When to Bring Your Saab 900 In
When a classic 900 or NG900 rolls into our South Salt Lake shop, we slow down and do things properly. These are older cars where one problem often leads to discovering others — and where a rushed diagnosis can send the wrong repair in the wrong direction. We road-test the car, inspect the full mechanical picture, and talk to you about what we found before quoting anything. The diagnosis is always free.
Clutch Replacement
The Saab 900's transverse front-wheel-drive layout places the transmission ahead of the engine, which makes clutch replacement significantly more involved than on a conventional front-wheel-drive car. The job requires experience with this specific configuration. We replace the clutch disc, pressure plate, and release bearing as a complete kit and inspect the flywheel for heat cracks and surface condition.
Learn more →Turbo System — Classic 900 Turbo
The original 900 Turbo used a Garrett T3 turbocharger with relatively modest boost pressure — reliable when oil changes were kept up, but sensitive to oil neglect. We inspect turbo shaft play, check the bypass valve, and test for boost leaks in the hoses and intercooler piping. On cars that have sat for extended periods, we verify that the turbo oil feed line is clear before starting the engine.
Learn more →Cooling System Service
Classic 900 cooling systems age hard — rubber hoses crack, the plastic coolant reservoir becomes brittle, and the water pump can weep without obviously puddling on the ground. We do a complete cooling system inspection and pressure test on every high-mileage or long-dormant 900 that comes in, and we replace components proactively rather than waiting for a roadside failure.
Learn more →Exhaust System Leaks and Rust
Utah's road salt environment is hard on the 900's exhaust system — manifold gaskets crack with age, and exhaust joints rust through. An exhaust leak on a turbocharged 900 is particularly important to address promptly because it affects boost pressure readings and exposes the cabin to exhaust gases. We inspect the full exhaust path and repair leaks at the joint, not with patch tape.
Learn more →Brake Service and Rear Drum Inspection
Early 900s used rear drum brakes — a system that many mechanics are less familiar with than discs. We service rear drums correctly: adjusting, inspecting wheel cylinders for seepage, and replacing hardware rather than just the shoes. 900s with rear disc conversions get the same thorough inspection front and rear.
Learn more →Strut and Suspension Wear
The classic 900's MacPherson strut front suspension wears predictably at the strut bearings and bushings. High-mileage cars develop clunking over bumps, vague steering, and uneven front tire wear as these components age. Replacement struts are still available through specialty suppliers — we source quality units and do the job with a post-repair alignment.
Learn more →Who to Trust for Saab 900 Repair in South Salt Lake
Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating at the same South Salt Lake address since 1990 — we opened when the classic 900 was still a current model. We're a hands-on shop where the technician who diagnoses your car is the one who repairs it. For a vehicle as distinctive as the Saab 900, that direct relationship matters.
Classic 900 owners aren't looking for the cheapest shop — they're looking for a shop that won't make the car worse. We work on these cars carefully, source parts through appropriate specialty suppliers, and are honest about what is and isn't practical to repair on a vintage vehicle. If your 900 needs a repair that exceeds what the car's condition justifies, we'll tell you plainly rather than take your money.
How We Work With Saab 900 Drivers
Call or Drop In
Reach us at (801) 485-4089 or stop by our South Salt Lake shop. Let us know your 900's year, whether it's turbocharged, and what it's doing — that context helps us prepare.
Free Inspection
We road-test your 900, do a visual inspection under the hood and beneath the car, and check the specific systems that match your concern — all at no charge.
Honest Estimate
We give you a plain-language explanation of what we found and a written estimate. For vintage vehicles we're especially clear about parts lead times and whether alternatives exist.
Work Begins Only With Your Approval
Nothing starts until you say go. On a classic car we call with any surprises rather than proceeding without your input.
Verification and Walkthrough
We verify the repair before returning the car and walk you through exactly what was done at pickup. We note anything else worth addressing at your next visit.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Saab 900s in the Salt Lake Valley.
Turbocharged 900s need full synthetic oil and a 5,000-mile change interval — and after a spirited drive, let the engine idle for two to three minutes before shutting it off to let heat dissipate from the turbo bearing. Shutting a hot turbo engine off immediately shortens turbo life significantly, especially on aging cars where the turbo oil feed line may have some varnish buildup.
Utah's dry climate preserves 900 body panels better than coastal states, but road salt on winter highways still attacks the exhaust system and underbody. Have the undercarriage inspected each spring — catching a developing exhaust leak or a soft brake line before it becomes a failure is much cheaper than roadside emergency repairs.
Classic 900 coolant hoses are decades old on most surviving cars — even if they don't look cracked on the outside, the inner liner can delaminate and restrict flow. If your 900 hasn't had a full cooling hose replacement in recent memory, consider doing it proactively. A stranded 900 in a Salt Lake summer with a burst hose is an unpleasant situation.

What Our Customers Say
Real reviews from Google — 5 stars across the board
“Excellent mechanic. We've used Scott for decades and keep coming back. Honest and friendly. Still keep coming back.”
“I just had my transmission rebuilt by Scott's auto and they did an amazing job for a good price. My car has not run this well for three years — would definitely recommend.”
“Scott is a very straightforward, no nonsense guy. We had to get the calipers fixed on our car, and Scott offered the best rates in the area. The service was also pretty quick.”
“Scott has always preferred good work on my vehicles. I had his shop replace the driveline on my 2014 VW Touareg — not an easy job. The cost was cheaper than another shop. They did a great job. I had them rebuild the alternator because it was too cold for me to do it. The cost was better than I thought. I am very pleased with their work. Scott has always given me good solid advice.”
