The B235 and B255 engines in the 9-5 are durable, but they depend entirely on consistent oil changes at 5,000-mile intervals with full synthetic oil. The timing chain tensioner is the most expensive failure on these engines, and nearly every one we've seen was on a car that stretched oil changes. It's cheap insurance.
Utah winters are hard on the 9-5's plastic cooling system components. Before the cold months, have the coolant system pressure-tested if your car has more than 80,000 miles — a slow leak from a cracked crossover pipe will get worse fast when temperatures drop and the plastic contracts.
If your 9-5 has more than 100,000 miles and the brake fluid has never been flushed, schedule it. Turbocharged cars generate significant engine bay heat that accelerates brake fluid moisture absorption — old fluid lowers the boiling point of the braking system and can cause fade on canyon descents.
