Why Porsche Boxster Drivers Choose Scott's Auto

The 986 Boxster introduced the M96 flat-six engine, which also powers the 996 911 and shares its IMS bearing vulnerability. Buyers who pick up a 986 or early 987 without understanding this are taking on risk they may not know about. At Scott's we're straightforward about what these cars need — we assess IMS condition, discuss your options, and repair what's actually failing. No scare tactics, no unnecessary upsells.

M96/M97 Platform Knowledge

The 986 and 987 Boxster use the same M96/M97 engine family as the 996/997 911. We're familiar with the IMS bearing concern, RMS leaks, and cooling system vulnerabilities on these engines — and we assess all of them as part of any major service on these cars.

Manual Clutch Specialists

Boxster manual clutch replacement is work we do regularly. The mid-engine layout makes clutch access more involved than a front-engine car, but it's well within our capability. We use quality OEM-spec kits and inspect the flywheel and hydraulic system as part of every clutch job.

Independent Pricing

Porsche dealer rates start at $200/hour and often exceed it. We charge for the mechanical work at an independent shop labor rate. On a Boxster clutch or water pump replacement, the savings versus a dealer can be substantial.

Free Diagnosis Every Visit

Road test, code pull, visual inspection — all at no charge. You know what's wrong and what it costs before we start. Written estimate required before any work begins.

When to Bring Your Porsche Boxster In

When a Boxster comes through our South Salt Lake shop, we drive it and inspect it before making any recommendations. The items below are the most common Boxster mechanical concerns we encounter. Bring yours in if any of these apply — the diagnosis is free.

Clutch Slip or Difficult Engagement

Manual Boxsters driven as sports cars — canyon runs, spirited mountain roads — will wear clutches at an accelerated rate compared to commuter vehicles. A Boxster clutch that slips under hard acceleration, has a very high engagement point, or chatters on cold morning starts needs inspection. The mid-engine clutch access is more involved than a front-engine car, but this is work we do regularly.

Water Pump Failure (986/987)

The M96/M97 engine's plastic-impeller water pump is one of the most documented failures on 986 and 987 Boxsters. The impeller separates from the shaft without warning, causing sudden overheating. On a mid-engine Boxster this can cook the engine quickly before the temperature gauge fully registers. We replace the plastic-impeller pump with a metal-impeller unit at every water pump service on these cars.

Exhaust Drone or Leak

Boxster exhaust systems — particularly on 986 and 987 models — can develop cracks at the heat exchanger connections and flex sections over time. A droning sound at highway speeds or a burning smell from the engine bay are the typical first signs. We inspect the full exhaust system and repair the leak at the source.

Soft Brake Pedal or Brake Fade

Boxster drivers who use their cars for canyon driving or occasional track days will push the braking system harder than it's designed for with stock fluid and pads. A pedal that feels softer than usual after a spirited drive typically indicates brake fluid that has absorbed enough moisture to boil at high temperatures. Fresh high-spec brake fluid and performance-grade pads make a meaningful difference.

Check Engine Light — Emissions and Catalyst Codes

High-mileage Boxsters (986 and 987) commonly trigger catalytic converter efficiency codes and oxygen sensor failure codes. The cats on these cars work hard under the flat-six's exhaust temperatures. We read the codes, verify what has actually failed, and replace only what's needed — not both cats by default.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. How We Work With Porsche Boxster Drivers

1

Tell Us What Your Boxster Is Doing

Describe the symptom, the warning light, or the service you're due for. The more context you give us, the more efficient the inspection.

2

Free Diagnostic Inspection

Road test, code pull, visual inspection of the system the symptom points to — no diagnostic charge.

3

Written Estimate, No Surprises

Plain language explanation of what we found and what it will cost. Nothing starts without your approval.

4

Only the Repairs It Needs

We don't recommend work your Boxster doesn't need. Deferred items get documented so you can plan.

5

Porsche Boxster Maintenance Tips for Utah Drivers

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Porsche Boxsters in the Salt Lake Valley.

986/987 Boxster water pump: if you own a 986 or early 987 and the water pump hasn't been replaced with a metal-impeller unit, do it proactively. The factory plastic impeller fails without warning, and in a mid-engine car the heat builds fast. A water pump replacement is relatively inexpensive compared to the engine damage that follows sudden overheating.

Brake fluid on canyon-driven Boxsters: Utah's mountain roads put real heat into Boxster brakes. If you do regular canyon runs from Salt Lake, change your brake fluid every spring — before canyon season. Fresh fluid with a high dry boiling point is inexpensive insurance against brake fade at the worst possible moment.

Soft-top care in Utah's UV environment: Salt Lake City's high-altitude sun is exceptionally harsh on Boxster convertible tops. UV degradation causes the fabric to stiffen, crack, and eventually leak. Treat the top with a UV-protectant conditioner twice a year. A well-maintained top lasts significantly longer than one that's been ignored in the Utah sun.

“Scott put a new clutch in my Jeep, got it done the same day for a really good price and got us back on the road. I would recommend him to anyone who asked!”

“I have taken my vehicles to many other mechanics before I found this place. They are absolutely the best — they won't give you the run around, they won't expect you to go find a bolt they broke (yes, that happened to me once), they will give you peace of mind. I cannot stress enough how much better Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair is than the competition. Even if you like your mechanic now, give them a try and let them wow you.”

“I have been to Scott to fix my truck on numerous occasions and I have never had to go back because he didn't actually fix it. He fixes everything the first time, period. I will be going to Scott as long as I need help with my vehicle. And he charges decent prices for his fixes.”
