Pontiac Grand Am Repair in South Salt Lake, UT

The Pontiac Grand Am was one of the most popular compact cars in America through the 1990s and early 2000s — affordable, sporty in appearance, and practical enough for families. The fifth-generation N-body Grand Am from 1999 to 2005 is the most common version we see, and it's a car that holds up well when it's been maintained. At Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair in South Salt Lake, we service Grand Ams with the 2.2L and 2.4L four-cylinder and 3.4L V6 engines.

Why Pontiac Grand Am Drivers Choose Scott's Auto

Grand Am owners come to us because it's the right choice for a practical, high-mileage car that deserves honest service. We don't dismiss a Grand Am because it's not a flagship vehicle — a car you depend on is a car worth fixing correctly, regardless of the badge. We diagnose it thoroughly, give you a written estimate, and only do the work it actually needs.

N-Body Platform Experience

The N-body Grand Am is a platform we know well — front strut suspension, GM 3400 and Quad 4 engine maintenance, and the brake service needs that come with a high-mileage front-drive compact.

Honest Assessment on High-Value Cars

A Grand Am owner deserves the same straight talk as any other customer. We tell you what the car needs, what it costs, and whether the repair makes sense relative to the car's value and your budget.

Timing Belt Service on 2.4L Quad Four

The 2.4L Twin Cam engine uses a timing belt — a wear item that many Grand Am owners overlook. We perform full timing belt service including water pump, tensioner, and idler.

Free Diagnosis Every Visit

Road test, code scan, and inspection before any recommendations. No diagnostic fee.

When to Bring Your Pontiac Grand Am In

The Grand Am is a durable platform with well-known failure points that show up predictably as mileage accumulates. The items below are what we address most often on Grand Am models at our South Salt Lake shop. Bring it in if your car shows any of these — diagnosis is free.

Timing Belt on 2.4L Twin Cam Engine

The 2.4L Quad Four and Twin Cam engines in Grand Am models use a rubber timing belt that needs replacement every 60,000–80,000 miles. Many high-mileage Grand Ams have either never had the belt changed or the service history is unknown. This is an interference engine — a broken belt destroys the engine. We do the full service including water pump, tensioner, and idler pulley.

Brake Wear and Caliper Seizing

Grand Am front brakes carry most of the braking load and wear faster than rear brakes. Caliper slide pins corrode on high-mileage cars, causing the caliper to stick and the inboard pad to wear significantly faster than the outboard. We replace pads and rotors as a set and service caliper slides at every brake job.

Front Strut Wear

N-body Grand Am front struts wear at predictable mileage intervals. Worn struts cause imprecise steering, excessive nose-dive under braking, and a bouncy ride over Utah road irregularities. We inspect and replace what's worn.

CV Axle Clicking on Turns

Grand Am CV axles develop clicking on turns — the classic sign of a worn outer CV joint after the boot cracks and grease escapes. We replace complete axle shafts for a durable repair.

Check Engine Light and Emissions Failure

High-mileage Grand Ams generate catalytic converter and O2 sensor codes. We diagnose the root cause before recommending parts — on an older car, getting the diagnosis right the first time matters.

How We Work With Pontiac Grand Am Drivers

1

Tell Us What Your Grand Am Is Doing

Describe the symptom — warning light, noise, brake feel, or ride quality concern. That context helps us start the diagnosis in the right place.

2

Free Diagnostic Inspection

Road test, code scan, fluid check, and visual inspection — before any recommendations.

3

Written Estimate — Straight Talk

What the car needs, what it costs, and whether it makes sense relative to the car's condition. In writing before we start.

4

Only What It Needs

We don't pad service on older cars. If something can safely wait, we tell you.

5

Road Test and Walkthrough

Every repair verified on a real road test. At pickup we walk you through what was done.

Pontiac Grand Am Maintenance Tips for Utah Drivers

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Pontiac Grand Ams in the Salt Lake Valley.

2.4L timing belt — age and mileage both matter: the 2.4L timing belt degrades from heat and ozone exposure as well as mileage. If your Grand Am's timing belt is over five years old regardless of mileage, or if you've bought the car used and don't know the belt history, schedule service immediately. The water pump and tensioner should be replaced at the same time.

GM Dex-Cool coolant maintenance: Grand Am models using the 3400 V6 had documented issues with Dex-Cool coolant going acidic when mixed with air in a low-coolant system — the resulting sludge clogged the intake manifold gaskets. If your Grand Am has the 3400 V6 and the coolant has never been serviced, a flush and fill is important maintenance.

Strut mounts on high-mileage Grand Ams: when replacing front struts on a Grand Am with high mileage, replace the upper strut mount bearing at the same time. The mount is a wear item that often shows undetected damage when the strut is removed. Replacing it during strut service avoids a separate labor charge later.
