Pontiac Firebird Repair in South Salt Lake, UT
The Pontiac Firebird is one of American performance car culture's most enduring symbols — from the first-generation Coke-bottle body of 1967 through the final fourth-gen cars that rolled off the line in 2002. At Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair in South Salt Lake, we service Firebirds and Trans Ams across all four generations. These cars come to us as daily drivers, weekend cruisers, and long-term restoration projects — and we treat each one with the respect the platform deserves.

We service all Pontiac Firebird generations at our South Salt Lake shop — first-gen through fourth-gen, small-block and big-block, naturally aspirated and Ram Air, manual and automatic. Every visit starts with a free diagnosis before any work begins.

Why Pontiac Firebird Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
Firebird owners are enthusiasts — they know their cars better than most, they're protective of them, and they want a shop that doesn't talk down to them. At Scott's, we've worked on F-body cars for decades. Whether you've got a third-gen TPI 350 that needs a clutch and exhaust work, or a fourth-gen LS1 Trans Am that needs suspension and brake refresh, we give you a straight assessment and a written estimate before we start.
F-Body Platform Knowledge
We've worked on second, third, and fourth-gen F-body cars throughout our history. The platform's quirks — T-top seals, exhaust routing, bellhousing fitment — are not mysteries to us.
Clutch Specialists for Manual Firebirds
High-torque V8 manual Firebirds chew through clutches, especially on cars driven enthusiastically. We stock clutch kits for T-5 and six-speed Borg-Warner applications and know the correct installation torque specs and break-in procedures.
Exhaust and Emissions Experience
Firebird exhaust systems are prone to corrosion and the catalytic converters on third and fourth-gen cars are legitimate theft targets. We handle full exhaust work and cat replacement on all F-body generations.
Free Diagnosis, No Lecture
We road test, pull codes if needed, and inspect the car before recommending anything. Written estimate before any work starts.
When to Bring Your Pontiac Firebird In
Firebirds of every generation come through our South Salt Lake shop — some that have been well-maintained and just need routine attention, some that have been sitting and need real work to come back to life. The issues below are what we see most consistently across the Firebird generations. Bring it in if your car is showing any of these — diagnosis is always free.
Clutch Wear on Manual V8 Firebirds
The T-5 five-speed in third-gen Firebirds and the Borg-Warner T-56 six-speed in fourth-gen Trans Ams and Formula models are strong transmissions, but the clutches behind them see real work. High-torque launches, canyon driving, and enthusiast use wear clutch discs and pressure plates faster than stock specifications suggest. Slipping under hard acceleration, a pedal that engages too high, or grinding when searching for a gear are all signs. We replace the full clutch kit — disc, pressure plate, and release bearing — and check the flywheel.
Learn more →Exhaust System Corrosion
Firebird exhaust systems — particularly the Y-pipes and mid-section on second and third-gen cars — corrode aggressively over decades of Utah road salt and freeze-thaw exposure. A growing exhaust drone, ticking at idle from a cracked manifold, or a sudden volume increase all indicate exhaust failure. We inspect, weld, or replace the affected sections.
Learn more →Brake Refresh on High-Mileage Firebirds
Fourth-gen Firebirds — especially WS6 Trans Ams with the performance brake package — have generous brake hardware that still wears and needs periodic attention. Rear calipers on these cars are prone to seizing on vehicles that sit infrequently. We replace pads, rotors, and service caliper slides at every brake job.
Learn more →Suspension Wear — Front Struts and Rear Shocks
Third and fourth-gen Firebird suspension components wear with mileage and are often the reason the car no longer handles the way it should. Front struts, rear shocks, and lower control arm bushings all degrade. We inspect the full suspension and replace what's actually worn — not everything at once unless everything actually needs it.
Learn more →Check Engine Light — Catalytic Converter Codes
Third and fourth-gen Firebirds with high mileage commonly generate P0420/P0430 catalytic converter efficiency codes. On a car this age, the cat genuinely may be worn out — but upstream O2 sensor failure causes the same code. We diagnose the actual cause before recommending a new catalytic converter.
Learn more →CV Axle Wear on IRS-Equipped Models
Fourth-gen Firebirds with independent rear suspension develop CV axle wear in the same pattern as any IRS vehicle — boot cracks, grease loss, joint wear, and eventual clicking on turns or vibration under load. We replace complete axle shafts.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990 — which means we were servicing Firebirds while they were still in production. We know the F-body platform, respect what these cars are, and treat them accordingly. The mechanic who diagnoses your Firebird is the one who repairs it.
Whether you've got an original-owner third-gen that just needs a clutch and exhaust refresh, or a fourth-gen Trans Am that's been sitting and needs a systematic going-over, we'll tell you exactly what it needs, what it costs, and what order to address it in. Written estimate before we touch it, road test before you pick it up.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Pontiac Firebirds in the Salt Lake Valley.
Fourth-gen LS1 oil quality: the LS1 in fourth-gen Trans Ams and Firebird Formula models is one of the most durable V8 engines ever built — but it responds to oil quality and change intervals. Use a quality full-synthetic 5W-30 and change it every 5,000 miles. The LS1 makes good power and generates real heat; don't push oil changes past interval on a car you're actually driving.
T-top seals: second and third-gen Firebirds with T-tops develop seal degradation that leads to water intrusion in the cabin. Fresh T-top seals are available through specialty suppliers and prevent the water damage that ruins headliners, carpet, and electrical connections. If your T-tops leak, address it before the next rain season.
Utah emissions on pre-OBD Firebirds: older carbureted and TBI Firebirds require a visual inspection and tailpipe test for Utah registration. If your Firebird has failed emissions or you're not sure it will pass, bring it in before the test — we can assess what needs attention to get it compliant.

“This guy is the best! Not only did he get my car done the same day, but when I couldn't pull it all the way there he came and pulled it with his own truck and son. Then he even charged my air conditioning! I'm a single mom with no one to really help with car stuff. This means the world to me. Couldn't ask for better help!! Thank you so much you saved the day and more!!! And honest to boot.”
“Scott gets my car done quickly and his prices are good. He only fixes what needs to be done and doesn't up-charge.”
“Scott is a great guy! Honest and to the point. Definitely saved me some money by not taking advantage of something I thought needed done. I will return.”
