Plymouth Neon Repair in South Salt Lake, UT
The Plymouth Neon was Chrysler's small front-wheel-drive compact — cheerful, affordable, and genuinely fun to drive when they were new. These cars were bought in large numbers and many are still on the road in the Salt Lake Valley. We've been working on Neons since the first ones arrived in Utah dealerships, and we know their specific weaknesses inside and out.
Full-Service Plymouth Neon Repair — All Generations
We service all Plymouth Neon models at our South Salt Lake shop — from the original 1995 base coupes and sedans through the final 1999 models. Every visit starts with a free diagnosis so you know exactly what your Neon needs before we touch it.

Why Plymouth Neon Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
The Neon has a reputation for head gasket problems that gave the platform more grief than it deserved — but it also has a lively engine and a short, direct manual gearbox that made it genuinely enjoyable to drive. We know which of these problems are real and which are overblown, and we can give you an honest assessment of what your Neon actually needs. If the head gasket has been done properly, these cars can be very reliable.
We Know the Neon Head Gasket Issue
First-generation Neon head gaskets are a known failure point — we've replaced plenty of them. We do the job correctly, with the right torque procedure and updated gasket, so you don't have to do it twice.
Manual Transmission Specialists
The Neon's 5-speed manual is one of the highlights of the car, and clutch replacement is one of our core services. We service the entire drivetrain from clutch to CV axle.
Straightforward Estimates on Budget Cars
Neons are budget vehicles. We quote fairly and tell you honestly if a repair cost doesn't make sense relative to the car's value. No upselling on a vehicle where the numbers don't support it.
Free Diagnosis on Every Neon
We road test your car, pull any stored codes, check fluid condition, and inspect what the symptom points to before recommending anything. Written estimate, no diagnostic fee.
When to Bring Your Plymouth Neon In
Neons have specific failure patterns that experienced mechanics learn quickly. The issues below cover the most common problems we see on these cars in our South Salt Lake shop. If your Neon is showing any of these symptoms, bring it in — we'll tell you what's going on and what it will cost to fix.
Head Gasket Failure — Coolant Loss and Overheating
The first-generation Neon's 2.0L SOHC and DOHC engines have a known head gasket weakness — the factory gasket design was marginal, and many high-mileage examples develop coolant leaks. Signs include unexplained coolant loss, white exhaust smoke on startup, or an engine that runs warm. We replace the gasket with an updated part and re-torque the head properly so the repair holds.
Learn more →Timing Belt Replacement
The 2.0L engine in the Neon uses a timing belt — and this is an interference engine. A belt failure means bent valves and an engine that won't run. If you don't know when the belt was last replaced, assume it's due. We replace the belt, tensioner, and water pump together for a complete service.
Learn more →Clutch Wear on Manual Neons
The Neon's 5-speed manual is a light, direct box — fun to drive but the clutch doesn't last forever, especially on cars used for spirited driving. A slipping clutch under acceleration, a high engagement point, or difficulty getting into gear are all signs it's time. We carry quality clutch kits for the Neon and know the correct procedure.
Learn more →Brake Squealing and Grinding
Neon front brakes — especially on sport-trimmed models that were driven hard — wear pads quickly. If you're hearing squealing (wear indicator) or grinding (metal-on-metal), don't delay. We inspect pads, rotors, and calipers and give you a clear picture of what needs replacement.
Learn more →Check Engine Light — Oxygen Sensor and Evap Codes
High-mileage Neons commonly trigger O2 sensor and evaporative emission codes. A P0420 catalyst efficiency code can sometimes be traced to a failing upstream O2 sensor rather than the converter itself. We read the codes, verify the root cause, and fix what actually needs fixing.
Learn more →CV Axle Clicking on Turns
Front-wheel-drive Neons wear out CV axles like any compact in their class. A clicking sound on turns — especially tight, low-speed maneuvers — is the classic worn outer CV joint symptom. We replace the complete axle shaft for a clean, lasting repair.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. We don't have a chain's overhead or upsell targets — the mechanic who diagnoses your Neon is the same one who repairs it. You get a direct conversation and a straight estimate.
Plymouth stopped selling the Neon after 1999, but these cars are still out there in significant numbers. Parts availability for the Neon is excellent through aftermarket suppliers, and many repairs are inexpensive. We'll give you an honest read on what your car needs and whether it makes sense to do the work.
How We Work With Plymouth Neon Drivers
Tell Us What's Going On
Describe the symptom — noise, warning light, fluid loss, or service you know is overdue. Specific detail helps us find the problem faster.
Free Diagnostic Inspection
We road test your Neon, pull any stored codes, check fluid condition, and examine the components related to the symptom — before recommending any work.
Written Estimate, Plain Language
No jargon, no surprises. You get a clear explanation of what we found and a written estimate before we start. Nothing happens without your approval.
Only What the Car Actually Needs
If something can safely wait, we'll say so. We don't upsell services on a budget car when the numbers don't make sense.

We verify the repair under real driving conditions before you pick up. We walk you through what was done and anything worth watching going forward.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Plymouth Neons in the Salt Lake Valley.
Head gasket early warning: if your first-gen Neon (1995–1999) is consuming coolant without any visible leak, or if the temperature gauge climbs slightly higher than normal, get it looked at before the gasket fully fails. A partial head gasket leak can often be caught before it becomes a full overheat — and a full overheat on an already-marginal gasket almost always warps the head, adding significantly to the repair cost.
Timing belt service: Chrysler recommended timing belt replacement every 60,000 miles on the 2.0L Neon engine. If you bought the car used and don't know the service history, assume the belt is due. The water pump is driven by the timing belt on this engine — replace both at the same time so you don't have to tear into the front of the engine again in a few years.
Utah registration and emissions: Plymouth Neons are subject to Utah's OBD-II emissions test for model years 1996 and newer. If your Neon's check engine light is on, it will fail the test even if the actual emissions are fine. Bring it in before your registration renewal — we'll diagnose what's tripping the light and give you a clear plan.
