Why Mitsubishi Eclipse Drivers Choose Scott's Auto

First and second generation Eclipses — the DSM-era turbocharged models — are some of the most technically interesting sports cars we work on. The 4G63 turbocharged engine is robust when properly maintained, but it has specific needs that a general shop without experience on these platforms can get wrong. Third and fourth generation models are more straightforward, but they have their own failure patterns. We know all of them.

DSM Platform Experience

We've worked on 1st and 2nd gen turbo Eclipses for decades. 4G63 timing belt jobs, turbo oil feed lines, boost leaks — these are routine work for us.

Clutch Specialists for AWD and FWD Models

Manual Eclipse clutch replacement is one of our core services. GSX all-wheel-drive clutch jobs and FWD GS-T clutches — we carry quality kits for every manual Eclipse generation.

Honest Assessment on High-Mileage Examples

Some older Eclipses are worth putting money into; others aren't. We'll tell you honestly what the repair costs and what the car is realistically worth — so you can make a good decision.

Free Diagnosis Every Visit

Road test, code scan, visual inspection — no charge — before a single repair is recommended. Written estimate before any work begins.

When to Bring Your Mitsubishi Eclipse In

Eclipse repairs at our shop span the full range — timing belt jobs on DSM-era turbos, clutch replacements on high-mileage GS-Ts, and exhaust and suspension work on 3rd and 4th gen models. We road test every car before recommending anything. The issues below are what we see most consistently across Eclipse generations.

Timing Belt on 4G63 and 4G64 Engines

The 4G63 turbo and 4G64 naturally aspirated engines in 1st through 3rd gen Eclipses use timing belts with interference configurations — if the belt breaks, the engine sustains serious internal damage. These belts should be replaced every 60,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes first. We do the water pump and all tensioners at the same time to avoid reopening the job.

Clutch Wear on Manual Models

Manual Eclipses, especially GSX AWD and GS-T models, wear clutches faster when driven aggressively. A clutch that's slipping under hard acceleration or has a high, grabby engagement point is overdue for replacement. We carry clutch kits for every manual Eclipse generation and know the correct installation procedures for both FWD and AWD setups.

Turbo Oil Feed Line Leaks

The turbocharger oil feed and return lines on 4G63 Eclipses are a known leak point as the vehicle ages. Oil that migrates onto hot exhaust components produces the burning smell owners sometimes notice at idle. Catching this early is important — a starved turbo bearing is a much more expensive problem than a feed line replacement.

Exhaust Manifold Gasket Failure

Third and fourth generation Eclipses commonly develop exhaust manifold gasket leaks as the gaskets harden and crack with heat cycling. You'll notice a ticking sound at idle that gets louder when the engine is cold, often accompanied by a faint exhaust smell in the cabin. We replace the gasket and inspect the manifold for cracks or warping at the same time.

Brake Service and Soft Pedal

High-mileage Eclipses often have brake fluid that hasn't been changed in years. Moisture-saturated brake fluid has a lower boiling point and can cause a soft, spongy pedal under hard braking. We flush the fluid, inspect the calipers, and check pad and rotor condition as a complete brake system inspection.

Who to Trust for Mitsubishi Eclipse Repair in South Salt Lake

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. We're an independent shop — the mechanic who finds the problem is the one who repairs it. DSM-era Eclipse owners, in particular, appreciate working with a shop that actually knows the 4G63 platform rather than treating it like an unknown quantity.

We've worked on Eclipses from first-generation GSX turbos to fourth-gen Spyders. Whether your car needs a timing belt, a clutch, a turbo inspection, or an honest assessment of what the repair is worth relative to the car's value, you'll get a direct answer and a written estimate before we start.

How We Work With Mitsubishi Eclipse Drivers

1

Tell Us What Your Eclipse Is Doing

Describe the symptom — the noise, the feel, or the service that's coming due. The more you tell us, the faster we diagnose it.

2

Free Diagnostic Inspection

We road test, pull any codes, check fluid condition, and inspect what the symptom points to — before recommending anything.

3

Written Estimate, No Jargon

You get a written estimate with plain-language explanations of what needs to be done and what it costs. Nothing starts until you approve it.

4

Only What the Car Needs

We don't upsell. If something can wait safely, we document it and tell you so you can budget and plan.

5

Road Test and Walkthrough at Pickup

We verify the repair under real driving conditions. At pickup we walk you through what was done.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Maintenance Tips for Utah Drivers

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Mitsubishi Eclipses in the Salt Lake Valley.

Timing belt is not optional on DSM Eclipses: if you own a 4G63 or 4G64 Eclipse and don't know when the last timing belt was done, treat it as overdue. The interference engine design means a belt failure destroys the engine. If you bought the car used and have no service history, a timing belt job is the first thing to schedule.

Turbo oil changes on DSM models: turbo Eclipses need regular, quality oil changes — the 4G63 turbo bearing relies on clean oil. Extending oil change intervals beyond 5,000 miles on a turbocharged Eclipse is a false economy. We see a lot of damaged turbo bearings that could have been prevented with regular changes.

Utah emissions testing and Eclipse catalytic converters: Utah's emissions testing program catches Eclipses with failed or absent catalytic converters. If your check engine light is on before a test, don't clear the code and hope — failed emissions leave you with a two-week repair window. Bring it in before your registration is due.
