Timing belt is not optional on DSM Eclipses: if you own a 4G63 or 4G64 Eclipse and don't know when the last timing belt was done, treat it as overdue. The interference engine design means a belt failure destroys the engine. If you bought the car used and have no service history, a timing belt job is the first thing to schedule.
Turbo oil changes on DSM models: turbo Eclipses need regular, quality oil changes — the 4G63 turbo bearing relies on clean oil. Extending oil change intervals beyond 5,000 miles on a turbocharged Eclipse is a false economy. We see a lot of damaged turbo bearings that could have been prevented with regular changes.
Utah emissions testing and Eclipse catalytic converters: Utah's emissions testing program catches Eclipses with failed or absent catalytic converters. If your check engine light is on before a test, don't clear the code and hope — failed emissions leave you with a two-week repair window. Bring it in before your registration is due.
