MINI Roadster Repair in South Salt Lake, UT
The MINI Roadster was the two-seat open-top sports car version of the MINI — lower, stiffer, and more focused than the standard Convertible. Built on the R58 platform and sharing architecture with the R57, the Roadster was offered with naturally aspirated Cooper, turbocharged Cooper S, and high-performance JCW engines. MINI discontinued it after 2015, and the cars that survive today are owned by enthusiasts who specifically wanted a proper sports roadster in a small package. At Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair, we service MINI Roadsters with the attention they deserve.

We service all MINI Roadster models at our South Salt Lake shop — Cooper, Cooper S, and JCW trims, manual and automatic, all model years 2012–2015. Every visit starts with a free diagnosis before any work begins.

Why MINI Roadster Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
The MINI Roadster is a low-production, enthusiast-focused car — the owners we see drive them because they genuinely love them, not because it was the practical choice. We respect that and service them accordingly: quality parts, honest diagnosis, and the kind of attention that keeps a special car going for a long time.
N14 and N18 Timing Chain Experience
The Roadster's N14 and higher-mileage N18 engines share timing chain vulnerabilities with the broader Prince engine family. We inspect and address these proactively.
Clutch Specialists for Sporty Manual Roadster
A manual Roadster driven the way it was built to be driven will wear a clutch. We stock quality clutch kits for all Roadster trims including JCW and do the full replacement — hydraulic inspection, flywheel check, and correct break-in at delivery.
Convertible Top Care and Service
The Roadster's fabric top requires specific maintenance — UV protection, mechanism inspection, and seal condition monitoring. We inspect the top at every service visit.
Free Diagnosis, Enthusiast-Appropriate Service
Road test, code scan, and inspection before any recommendations. Written estimate before work starts.
When to Bring Your MINI Roadster In
The MINI Roadster is a small-displacement performance car that rewards proper maintenance. The items below represent what we address most frequently on Roadsters at our South Salt Lake shop. If your car is showing any of these, bring it in — diagnosis is free.
Timing Chain on N14/N18 Engines
Both the N14 and N18 Prince-family engines in the Roadster share documented timing chain guide wear. The N18 addressed some N14 weaknesses but is not immune. Cold-start rattle and timing-related check engine codes are the warning signs. We inspect the chain assembly proactively on high-mileage Roadsters.
Learn more →Clutch Wear on Manual Roadster
A manual Roadster — especially a JCW — driven on canyon roads will wear a clutch faster than a commuter car. Slipping under hard acceleration, a grabby engagement point, or difficulty finding neutral are the signs. We replace the full clutch kit with quality OEM-spec components.
Learn more →Water Pump Failure on Prince Engines
N14 Roadsters are vulnerable to the same plastic impeller water pump failure as other Prince-engine MINIs. Temperature spike with no external leak — the impeller has separated from the pump shaft. We replace with an upgraded metal impeller pump.
Learn more →Brake Wear — Sport-Focused Platform
The Roadster's sport-tuned brakes work hard on a car used for canyon driving. Front pads wear first, rear close behind on JCW models. We inspect brake condition at every service and replace as a complete set.
Learn more →Exhaust Noise on Aging Roadster
Roadster exhaust systems corrode and develop flex pipe and hanger failures over time. A growing exhaust drone or rattle is usually a cracked flex section or broken hanger. We repair or replace the affected section and inspect the full exhaust run.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating from the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. The MINI Roadster is a special car — a two-seat sports roadster built in limited numbers for people who prioritize driving pleasure. We treat it as such: quality parts, thorough diagnosis, and a mechanic who takes the work seriously from start to finish.
Whether your Roadster needs a timing chain, a clutch, a water pump, or a pre-season inspection before the weather opens up for canyon driving, we'll give you a written estimate before we start and a real road test verification before you pick it up.
How We Work With MINI Roadster Drivers
Tell Us What Your Roadster Is Doing
Describe the symptom in detail. Performance car symptoms are often specific — the more detail you give us, the faster we can diagnose.
Free Diagnostic Inspection
Road test, code scan, fluid check, and targeted inspection — before any recommendations.
Written Estimate in Plain Language
What it needs, what it costs, why — in writing before any work starts.
Quality Parts for a Specialist Car
We use OEM-grade parts on the Roadster — not the cheapest available. A low-production enthusiast car deserves better than that.
Road Test and Walkthrough at Pickup
We verify every repair on a real road test. At pickup we walk you through what was done.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing MINI Roadsters in the Salt Lake Valley.
Utah UV and your Roadster top: Salt Lake City UV intensity at altitude is higher than most owners realize. A fabric convertible top that looks fine in the fall can crack at seams and degrade quickly through a full Utah summer. Apply a quality UV-protecting fabric conditioner to the top twice a year — spring before the hot season and fall before storage.
Roadster winter storage: if you store your Roadster through Utah winters, change the oil before storage — not after. Old oil contains combustion acids that eat at engine internals during long storage periods. Start the car every two to three weeks during storage and let it reach operating temperature.
JCW brake fluid: if you have a JCW Roadster and use it on canyon runs, change brake fluid annually regardless of mileage. The JCW produces enough power and speed to generate real brake heat — moisture-contaminated fluid compresses under heat and gives you a spongy pedal when you need maximum braking most.
