MINI Paceman Repair in South Salt Lake, UT
The MINI Paceman was a two-door, coupe-roofline interpretation of the Countryman — lower, sportier, and available with the same ALL4 AWD system. MINI built it for just four model years before discontinuing it, which means the cars on the road today are dedicated owners who chose something genuinely different. At Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair in South Salt Lake, we service Pacemans with the same attention we give every MINI — knowing the R61 platform's specific needs and keeping these cars on the road.
Full-Service MINI Paceman Repair — All Generations
We service all MINI Paceman models at our South Salt Lake shop — N14 turbocharged and naturally aspirated engine variants, ALL4 AWD and FWD, manual and automatic configurations. Every visit starts with a free diagnosis before any work begins.

Why MINI Paceman Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
The Paceman is a discontinued model, which means finding a shop that knows it well matters more than it would for a current-production car. We know the R61 platform — it shares its architecture with the R60 Countryman — and we service Pacemans regularly. The timing chain situation on N14-equipped Pacemans is the same issue as the rest of the Prince engine family, and we treat it with the same urgency.
R61 Platform Knowledge
The Paceman's R61 platform is shared with the R60 Countryman — we know it well. Common failure points, correct fluid specs, and the right parts for a car that MINI no longer sells new.
N14 Timing Chain Expertise
Every N14-equipped Paceman has the same timing chain guide vulnerability. We inspect it proactively and replace the assembly before guide failure sends debris through the engine.
ALL4 AWD Service
Paceman ALL4 drivetrain service — including rear drive unit fluid and CV axle inspection — is part of our regular Paceman service protocol.
Free Diagnosis, No Pressure
Road test, code scan, fluid inspection, and a written estimate before any work starts. You decide what gets done.
When to Bring Your MINI Paceman In
The Paceman is an R60-derived platform with Prince-family engines, which means the maintenance needs and failure patterns are consistent with what we see across the broader first-gen MINI lineup. The items below are what we address most often on Pacemans at our South Salt Lake shop.
N14 Timing Chain Guide Wear
The Prince N14 engine in the MINI Paceman has the same documented plastic timing chain guide wear issue as the Cooper, Countryman, and Clubman. Cold-start rattle, timing-related check engine codes, and rough running are the signs. We inspect the chain assembly at every major service on high-mileage N14 Pacemans and replace it when wear is present.
Learn more →Water Pump Failure
N12 and N14 plastic impeller water pumps fail in a specific way — the impeller separates from the shaft, the pump spins freely, and coolant stops circulating. Temperature rises quickly. We replace with a metal impeller pump and inspect the cooling system thoroughly.
Learn more →Brake Service — Sport-Tuned Platform
The Paceman's sport-tuned suspension and lower stance mean brakes work harder in spirited driving. Front brake pads wear faster than on a standard Cooper. We inspect at every service and replace as a complete set.
Learn more →CV Axle Clicking on ALL4 Paceman
ALL4 Paceman CV axles develop clicking on turns as boot seals crack and grease escapes. The AWD configuration adds drivetrain stress that accelerates boot wear. We replace complete axle shafts.
Learn more →Suspension Wear — Lowered Sport Stance
Paceman suspension components wear with mileage and Utah road conditions. The lower sport stance means less suspension travel, which translates to harder impacts on rough pavement. Strut and shock wear shows up as clunking and degraded ride quality.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair is independently owned and has been operating from the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. The Paceman is a discontinued MINI with a dedicated owner base — if you own one, you chose it deliberately and you want a shop that knows it. We service R61 Pacemans regularly and understand the platform's specific needs.
The R61 Paceman is an R60 Countryman in a sport body — the maintenance items are the same. Timing chain, water pump, brakes, ALL4 drivetrain service: all routine for us. We give you a written estimate before we start and a road test verification before you pick up the car.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing MINI Pacemans in the Salt Lake Valley.
Paceman timing chain urgency: if your N14-equipped Paceman is over 60,000 miles and the timing chain has never been inspected, schedule it immediately. This is not a precautionary note — the guide failure pattern on Prince-family engines is well-documented and can happen without much warning.
ALL4 rear drive unit: don't skip the rear drive unit fluid change on a Paceman ALL4. It's an interval that many owners and even some shops overlook. Old fluid causes clutch pack wear inside the unit and leads to AWD system binding and eventual rear drive unit failure.
Cooling system vigilance: the N14 Paceman cooling system should be checked monthly for coolant level. A slow leak from the water pump area can drop the level before it triggers a warning light. Check the overflow reservoir when the engine is cold — if it's consistently low, bring it in.

5-Star Reviews
What Our Customers Say
Real reviews from Google — 5 stars across the board
“What a smart no nonsense guy. Really don't think there's a better mechanic in the Valley. Scott's replaced my Ford Edge's transmission, worked on my Honda and gonna do some work on my new Tundra I'm sure. Take it to Scott's not the dealership. 10 STARS!”
“Took my grandson's car in to have the clutch looked at. We thought it might need a new clutch. Scott explained the level of wear and thought it was premature to replace it. He could have just said it needed a new clutch and I wouldn't have blinked an eye. I appreciated the honesty. Only needed a clutch adjustment. I also had him wire up a new set of fog lights and they look and work great. He will definitely get our business in the future.”
“Great shop! Knowledgeable staff. Fast service! They always make time for the unexpected repairs that need to be fixed quickly.”
“Skilled, friendly, and cost-efficient. Will definitely bring other vehicles back.”
