Why Mazda MX-5 Miata Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
Miata owners are a particular kind of car person — they don't need convincing that driving enjoyment matters, and they notice when something about their car is off. At Scott's, we match that standard. We won't shortcut a Miata repair, we won't recommend things that aren't needed, and we'll tell you exactly what we found in plain language. A well-maintained Miata is one of the most rewarding cars on the road — we help keep them that way.
Clutch Specialists for All Miata Generations
Clutch replacement is one of our core services and the Miata's manual gearbox is something we're very comfortable with. We stock quality clutch kits for NA, NB, NC, and ND Miatas and know the correct flywheel procedures for each generation.
Timing Belt Service on NA and NB
NA and NB Miatas use a timing belt that is a mandatory replacement service. We've done timing belt jobs on these platforms many times — we know the correct belt, tensioner, and water pump replacement procedure and we don't cut corners on this critical service.
We Know What a Miata Is Supposed to Feel Like
Suspension and alignment work on a Miata matters more than on most cars because of how much feedback the driver gets. When we finish suspension or steering work on a Miata, we road test it specifically for the feel — not just to confirm it drives straight.
Free Diagnosis, No Pressure
Road test, code scan, and inspection — included before we recommend anything. Written estimate before we start. No diagnostic fee.
When to Bring Your Mazda MX-5 Miata In
Miatas come into our shop for a wide range of reasons — worn clutches, overdue timing belts, exhaust work, and suspension refreshes on higher-mileage NA and NB cars. The issues below represent what we see most consistently across all four Miata generations. Bring yours in and we'll diagnose it at no charge.
Clutch Wear — Every Generation
The Miata's lightweight chassis and rev-happy engine make it a pleasure to drive with a manual gearbox — and a pleasure to drive means the clutch works harder than it would in a commuter sedan. NA clutches driven enthusiastically may need replacement around 60,000–80,000 miles. NB and NC clutches similar. ND clutches are more robust but not immune. Signs include a high engagement point, slipping under hard acceleration, or a grinding sensation when moving between gears. We've done clutch replacements on all four Miata generations.
Learn more →Timing Belt Service on NA and NB
The 1.6L and 1.8L B-series engines in NA and NB Miatas use a rubber timing belt that must be replaced on schedule — Mazda's interval is every 60,000 miles, but many NA and NB Miatas on the road have unknown service histories. An interference engine means a broken belt equals bent valves. We replace the belt, tensioner, idler pulley, and water pump as a complete kit — doing half the job is not worth the risk on an engine this valuable to its owner.
Learn more →Exhaust and Catalytic Converter
Miata exhausts are a frequent modification target, but stock systems on NA and NB cars are now old enough to develop genuine rust issues — flex pipes, mid-pipes, and manifold studs are all common failure points. NC and ND catalytic converters occasionally trigger efficiency codes. We service stock and modified exhaust systems and can address whatever your Miata needs in this area.
Learn more →Shock and Strut Replacement for Handling
An NA or NB Miata with worn shocks is a significantly different driving experience than it should be — the chassis becomes vague, the back end moves around, and you lose the confidence that makes the car fun. We inspect shock condition and mounting hardware on every high-mileage Miata and recommend replacement when it'll make a meaningful difference to the driving experience.
Learn more →Brake Service and Rotor Wear
Miata brakes are sized to the car's weight — which means they're relatively small and can fade if overworked on canyon descents. Rotor warping from repeated hard stops, pad glazing, and caliper wear are all things we see on Miatas used for spirited driving. If your Miata has brake pulsation, pulls on stops, or feels spongy, don't put off having it looked at.

How We Work With Mazda MX-5 Miata Drivers
Tell Us What Your Miata Is Doing
Describe the noise, the feel, the warning light, or what service is due. Miata owners usually have a pretty good idea — we'll take it from there.
Free Diagnostic Inspection
We road test your Miata, pull codes if applicable, and inspect what the symptom points to — before recommending a repair.
Written Estimate in Plain Language
You get an itemized estimate and a clear explanation of what we found. Nothing starts without your approval.
Only the Work Your Miata Needs
We don't recommend services your car doesn't need. If something can safely wait, we tell you and document it.
Road Test and Walkthrough at Pickup
We verify every repair on a road test with Miata driving in mind — not just straight-line function. At pickup we walk you through what was done.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Mazda MX-5 Miatas in the Salt Lake Valley.
Timing belt interval on NA and NB Miatas: Mazda's published interval is 60,000 miles, but many NA and NB Miatas circulating in the Salt Lake market have unclear service histories. If you don't know when the belt was last changed, treat it as overdue and replace it. The B6 and BP engines are interference designs — a broken belt bends valves. A complete belt, tensioner, and water pump service is good insurance and not an expensive job relative to the alternative.
NA and NB Miata rust prevention in Utah winters: the underbody of older Miatas is vulnerable to rust from road salt. If you drive your NA or NB in winter, rinse the undercarriage regularly — especially the sill areas, floor pans, and frame rails. Utah's dry climate slows rust compared to the Pacific Northwest, but magnesium chloride brine used on Utah roads is aggressive. An ounce of prevention here extends the life of a collectible car significantly.
Miata brake fluid intervals: because Miatas are often driven harder than average — canyon runs, track days, spirited mountain roads — brake fluid should be flushed every two years regardless of mileage. Old brake fluid absorbs moisture, which lowers its boiling point. On a lightweight car with proportionally smaller brakes doing canyon descents, degraded brake fluid can cause brake fade at exactly the wrong moment.

What Our Customers Say
Real reviews from Google — 5 stars across the board
“Does a good job, in a timely manner.”
“I had a pretty good experience. They got me in pretty quick. They did work on my 2014 Chevy Tahoe LT — replaced my 2 front oxygen sensors, changed the front windshield washer fluid pump, and did a coolant flush. They allowed me to bring my own parts and coolant, which I really appreciated. Done for a fair price. Would come back.”
“My transmission and clutch went out. Another shop had my car 2 weeks and wanted $5,000. I called Scott's and he went out of his way for my car — did the job in 24 hours for $1,500. Thanks to people like Scott who help out. Thank you again!”
