Why Lincoln Navigator Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
Navigator owners come to Scott's for the same reason most luxury truck owners do: dealers charge $180–200 per hour and route every repair through a service advisor. The air suspension on second and third-gen Navigators, the 5.4L timing chain and spark plug issues, and the brake system on a 6,000-pound SUV are all jobs that require experience — and we have it. One mechanic looks at your Navigator and handles the repair from start to finish.
5.4L Triton V8 Experience
The 5.4L Triton in second and third-gen Navigators has well-documented timing chain and cam phaser issues. We've diagnosed and repaired these systems on enough Ford/Lincoln trucks to know the failure patterns and the repairs that hold up.
Air Suspension Repairs at Independent Rates
The Navigator's air suspension compressor, air bags, and height sensors all eventually fail — and dealer replacement quotes are steep. We handle the full air suspension system at independent-shop rates, diagnosing the specific failed component before recommending a fix.
Heavy-Truck Brake Service
A loaded Navigator weighs as much as a light-duty commercial truck. Brake components sized for that weight wear at a corresponding rate. We service the complete brake system — pads, rotors, calipers, and fluid — with the Navigator's weight demands in mind.
Free Diagnosis on Every Navigator
Road test, code pull, and full inspection before we recommend anything. Written estimate before work begins — no diagnostic fee.
When to Bring Your Lincoln Navigator In
Navigators are built to last well past 200,000 miles with proper maintenance — but the components that get them there require attention at the right intervals. Air suspension failures, timing chain stretch on the 5.4L, and brake wear on a heavy luxury SUV are the most common reasons Navigator owners call us. If any of the symptoms below apply to your truck, bring it in for a free look.
Rear Sag or Suspension Warning — Air Bags
The Navigator's rear air suspension bags wear out and develop leaks — the most obvious symptom is the rear of the truck sitting lower than the front, especially after sitting overnight. The suspension compressor will run continuously trying to compensate, and will burn out if the bag leak isn't repaired. We diagnose whether it's the bag, the compressor, or a solenoid before recommending a fix.
Learn more →Timing Chain Rattle — 5.4L Triton
The 5.4L Triton V8 in second and third-gen Navigators has known timing chain and cam phaser issues at higher mileage. A brief metallic rattle on cold startup that fades as oil pressure builds is the classic sign. This is a repair worth doing proactively — a jumped chain on a 5.4L causes serious engine damage and the repair cost jumps dramatically.
Learn more →Brake Grinding or Soft Pedal
The Navigator's size and weight demand exceptional brake performance — and the brakes show that use. Rear brakes on Navigators used for towing wear faster than the fronts. A soft pedal usually means old brake fluid or a caliper issue; grinding means pads are worn through. We inspect the full brake system and replace what's actually worn.
Learn more →Rough Idle or Check Engine — Cam Phaser Codes
P0022, P0012, and related cam phaser codes on the 5.4L Triton indicate the variable valve timing system needs attention. These codes are usually caused by oil pressure issues, dirty oil, or worn cam phasers. We diagnose the root cause — oil system vs. mechanical wear — before recommending specific parts.
Learn more →Exhaust Tick — Manifold Studs or Gaskets
The 5.4L Triton is known for exhaust manifold stud breakage — a repair more common on this engine than most. The tick is most pronounced on cold startup and changes with engine speed. Broken studs allow the manifold to move and the gasket to fail. We extract broken studs and replace the gasket, which stops the tick and prevents exhaust from entering the cabin.
Learn more →Clicking on Turns — Front CV Axle
Navigators with independent front suspension use CV axles that wear over time — especially on trucks used for light off-road or repeated four-wheel-drive engagement in Utah's winter conditions. A rhythmic clicking during slow turns is the sign. We replace the complete axle shaft for a durable long-term repair.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Lincoln Navigators in the Salt Lake Valley.
5.4L Triton oil changes: the 5.4L's cam phasers and timing chain tensioners depend on clean, properly pressurized oil. Use a quality full-synthetic 5W-20 and change it every 5,000 miles on any Navigator past 100,000 miles — don't stretch intervals even if the oil life monitor allows it. Dirty oil is the fastest route to a $3,000 timing chain job on this engine.
Navigator air suspension overnight test: if you suspect an air bag leak, park your Navigator on a flat surface and check the ride height first thing in the morning before starting the engine. If the rear has settled noticeably overnight, a bag is leaking. Don't run the compressor continuously — if the bag isn't replaced, the compressor will burn out trying to compensate, turning a $300 bag replacement into a $600 repair.
Utah towing and Navigator brakes: if you regularly tow a boat, camper, or trailer on Utah's canyon roads, inspect your Navigator's brake pads every 15,000 miles regardless of what the dashboard indicates. Downhill towing on Parleys Canyon or Highway 189 generates extreme brake heat — rotors warp and pads wear far faster than flat-road driving would suggest. Contaminated brake fluid also boils more easily under tow-load braking.
