Why Lincoln MKX Drivers Choose Scott's Auto

The MKX sees its fair share of Utah canyon roads, ski resort runs, and high-mileage daily driving — and the wear patterns reflect that. The 2.7L EcoBoost in second-gen models is a capable engine that rewards proper maintenance, and the AWD system puts specific demands on the front CV axles and rear differential. We service the full vehicle, not just whatever triggered the warning light.

2.7L EcoBoost and 3.7L Cyclone Engine Service

We know both MKX engine options — the naturally aspirated 3.7L Cyclone V6 and the turbocharged 2.7L EcoBoost. Each has its own maintenance requirements and we service both correctly.

AWD System Familiarity

The MKX AWD system connects a front-drive platform to a rear drive unit through a power take-off unit. Fluid service in the PTU and rear drive unit is something many shops skip — we don't.

Free Diagnosis on Every MKX

Road test, code pull, and full inspection before we recommend anything. Written estimate before work begins — no diagnostic fee.

No Unnecessary Services

We don't pad estimates. If something can wait, we'll tell you and note it. The mechanic who diagnoses your MKX is the one doing the repair.

When to Bring Your Lincoln MKX In

Both generations of MKX are now in mileage ranges where maintenance items are routine — timing chain inspection on the EcoBoost, strut replacement, brake service, and CV axle wear on AWD models driven through Utah's varied conditions. If any of the symptoms below sound familiar, bring your MKX in for a free look.

Check Engine — EcoBoost Timing or Cam Codes

The 2.7L EcoBoost in the second-gen MKX can develop timing chain stretch and cam phaser codes on higher-mileage examples with inconsistent oil changes. P0011, P0022, and fuel trim codes are common. We pull the codes, road test, and inspect before recommending a specific repair.

Bouncy Ride — Struts and Shock Absorbers

First-gen MKX models at high mileage have often worn through their original struts. A crossover that bounces excessively after bumps or wallows through gradual corners has lost shock damping. Utah's frost-heaved winter roads accelerate strut wear faster than smoother climates. We inspect the mounts and bearing plates at the same time — they often go together.

Squealing or Grinding Brakes

The MKX's rear brakes wear faster than most owners expect — especially on AWD models where weight distribution and traction demands change brake loading. Squealing is the wear indicator; grinding means you're past it. We inspect the full system before recommending replacements.

Clicking on Turns — Front CV Axles

The MKX's front CV axles handle the torque from a 3.5L or 2.7L V6 and, on AWD models, the demands of all-surface traction. A clicking that's loudest during slow-speed turns in parking lots is a worn outer CV joint. We replace the complete axle shaft for a more durable repair.

Exhaust Noise or Burning Smell — EcoBoost Heat

The 2.7L EcoBoost runs hot and creates more heat near the exhaust system than the naturally aspirated 3.5L. A burning smell or louder-than-normal exhaust can indicate an exhaust manifold gasket, a heat shield that's come loose, or a small oil leak onto a hot exhaust component. We inspect the full exhaust and engine bay before recommending a repair.

Lincoln MKX Maintenance Tips for Utah Drivers

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Lincoln MKXs in the Salt Lake Valley.

2.7L EcoBoost PTU fluid service: AWD MKX models have a power take-off unit that drives the rear axle. The PTU has its own fluid that Ford originally said was lifetime — it isn't. By 60,000 miles the PTU fluid is typically dark and depleted of its additive package. Service it every 60,000 miles and you'll avoid the whining and eventual failure that plagues neglected PTUs.

EcoBoost oil changes and turbo longevity: the 2.7L EcoBoost's turbochargers rely on clean oil for bearing lubrication. In Utah's cold winters, the turbo sees prolonged cold-start oil starvation on short trips that don't fully warm up the engine. Use full-synthetic 5W-30 and change it every 5,000 miles — the turbo bearings and timing chain both benefit from clean oil.

MKX ride quality and Utah winter roads: the MKX's struts take a real beating on Salt Lake's frost-heaved residential streets. If your crossover's ride has noticeably changed over a winter — more bouncing, more front-end noise — have the strut mounts and struts inspected in the spring. A worn strut mount is often the first thing to go and the cheapest to address early.
