Why Jeep Renegade Drivers Choose Scott's Auto

The Renegade's Italian-American platform brings some quirks that owners encounter as mileage climbs. The 1.4L MultiAir turbocharged engine has a timing belt rather than a chain — something many owners don't realize until the service comes due. Front CV axle wear and strut issues are the other common items we see regularly. We diagnose and service all of these at our South Salt Lake shop.

Timing Belt Service — 1.4T MultiAir

The Renegade's 1.4L turbocharged engine uses a timing belt that must be replaced on schedule. We perform complete timing belt services including the water pump, tensioner, and idler — everything that should come out while the engine is open.

CV Joint and Strut Repair

Front CV axle noise and worn struts are the two most consistent mechanical complaints on higher-mileage Renegades. We handle both efficiently at our South Salt Lake shop.

Free Diagnosis on Every Renegade

We road test, pull codes, and inspect your Renegade before recommending anything. You get a written estimate before we start. No diagnostic fee.

Independent Shop, Fair Pricing

Scott's has been at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. We're not a dealer or franchise — the mechanic who diagnoses your Renegade is the one who repairs it.

When to Bring Your Jeep Renegade In

Renegades typically come in for timing belt service that's due or overdue, CV axle noise that started in a parking lot, strut wear on higher-mileage examples, or a check engine light from the small-displacement turbocharged engine. We address all of these regularly.

Timing Belt Replacement — 1.4T MultiAir

The 1.4L turbocharged engine in the Renegade uses a timing belt, and it's an interference engine. A failed belt doesn't just stop the car — it bends valves. Factory interval is roughly 100,000 miles, but Utah's temperature range cycles rubber hard. We do the complete service: belt, water pump, tensioner, and idler.

CV Axle Click on Turns

Front CV axle clicking on low-speed turns is one of the most common issues on higher-mileage Renegades. Boot failure leads to joint contamination and wear. We replace complete axle shafts rather than attempting boot-only repairs on worn joints.

Strut Wear and Rough Ride

Renegade front struts show wear on higher-mileage examples — bouncing on Utah's expansion joints and wandering on uneven road surfaces are the common complaints. We replace struts in pairs for consistent ride and handling.

Brake Service

Front brake pads on the Renegade wear at a typical small-SUV rate, but drivers who use canyon roads for ski season access go through them faster. Squealing or a soft pedal means it's time. We inspect the complete brake system before recommending specific repairs.

Check Engine Light — 1.4T Turbocharged Engine

The Renegade's 1.4T commonly triggers codes from the MAF sensor, O2 sensors, and EVAP system as mileage climbs. Turbocharged engines can also produce misfire codes from worn spark plugs or ignition components. We read the codes and diagnose the actual cause before recommending parts.

Who to Trust for Jeep Renegade Repair in South Salt Lake

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. We're not a chain and we don't have a service advisor layer. The mechanic who diagnoses your Renegade is the one who repairs it — straight answers, written estimates, and no upsell pressure.

We see Renegades regularly and know the maintenance items that define this generation — timing belt service, CV axle work, and strut replacement. If your Renegade is due for any of these or has a symptom you're not sure about, bring it in and we'll tell you exactly what it needs.

How We Work With Jeep Renegade Drivers

1

Tell Us What Your Renegade Is Doing

Describe the noise, the warning light, or the service you're due for. Knowing the engine type — 1.4T or 2.4L — helps us identify the most likely cause quickly.

2

Free Diagnostic Inspection

We road test your Renegade, pull any stored codes, check fluid condition, and inspect what the symptom points to — before recommending a single repair.

3

Plain-Language Explanation

We explain what we found in plain terms. You get a written estimate covering exactly what needs to be done, what it costs, and why. Nothing starts until you approve it.

4

Only the Work Your Renegade Needs

We don't recommend repairs your vehicle doesn't need. If something can safely wait, we'll tell you and note it for your next visit.

5

Road Test and Walkthrough at Pickup

We verify the repair before you pick up and walk you through what was done at pickup.

Where to Find Us — Jeep Renegade Repair in South Salt Lake

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair is located at 144 W Crystal Ave in South Salt Lake — centrally positioned in the valley, within 15 minutes of most Salt Lake City zip codes. Easy to reach from I-15, serving Jeep Renegade drivers from Millcreek, Murray, Draper, Sandy, West Jordan, Taylorsville, and across the greater Salt Lake area.

Jeep Renegade Maintenance Tips for Utah Drivers

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Jeep Renegades in the Salt Lake Valley.

Renegade 1.4T owners: use full-synthetic oil and change it on schedule. The small-displacement turbo runs hot, and degraded oil in a turbocharged engine causes accelerated wear on the turbocharger bearings — which aren't cheap to replace. Don't stretch your oil changes in Utah's temperature extremes.

If you take your Renegade on Utah canyon roads or gravel trails, check your front wheel well areas for gravel and debris packing around the CV boots. Small rocks can work their way into a boot and tear it, starting the clock on joint failure. A quick visual check after any off-pavement driving takes thirty seconds.

Renegade owners approaching 90,000–100,000 miles: if you don't have a record of the timing belt being replaced, treat it as overdue. Utah's climate cycles rubber components harder than the factory interval assumes. The water pump should come out at the same time — it's a false economy to leave it in when the engine is already open.

“When my previous mechanic told me my car could not be fixed I was desperate and about to get rid of it. But before I gave up I wanted to try one last mechanic. Then I found Scott — brought the car to him and he fixed it quickly like nothing. I couldn't believe it, my car was just running fine. Scott is a genius, he resurrected my dead car!”

“Scott has always preferred good work on my vehicles. I had his shop replace the driveline on my 2014 VW Touareg — not an easy job. The cost was cheaper than another shop. They did a great job. I had them rebuild the alternator because it was too cold for me to do it. The cost was better than I thought. I am very pleased with their work. Scott has always given me good solid advice.”

“What a smart no nonsense guy. Really don't think there's a better mechanic in the Valley. Scott's replaced my Ford Edge's transmission, worked on my Honda and gonna do some work on my new Tundra I'm sure. Take it to Scott's not the dealership. 10 STARS!”
