Isuzu Trooper Repair in South Salt Lake, UT
The Isuzu Trooper is a body-on-frame, truck-based SUV that built a loyal following among owners who needed real off-road capability without the price premium of a Land Cruiser. We see Troopers regularly at our South Salt Lake shop — high-mileage examples that are worth keeping alive for canyon trails, ski resort runs, and the kind of terrain that destroys lesser vehicles.
Full-Service Isuzu Trooper Repair — All Generations
We service all Isuzu Trooper generations at our South Salt Lake shop — first-generation carbureted models through the final DOHC 3.5L V6 examples from 2002. Every visit starts with a free diagnosis so you know exactly what your Trooper needs before we touch it.

Why Isuzu Trooper Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
The Trooper is an aging but genuinely capable vehicle, and Utah's terrain — canyons, desert two-tracks, mountain roads — is exactly what it was built for. The 3.2L SOHC and 3.5L DOHC V6 engines in the second-generation Trooper are strong powerplants that hold up well when maintained correctly. The timing belt, 4WD system, and cooling components are the areas that need the most attention on high-mileage examples.
Body-on-Frame Truck Platform Experience
The Trooper shares its fundamental engineering approach with other truck-based SUVs — we work on this platform regularly and know what wears, what holds up, and what needs proactive attention.
4WD System and Transfer Case Service
The Trooper's part-time 4WD system requires proper transfer case fluid maintenance and periodic inspection of the front locking hubs. Utah's off-road use demands a functional 4WD system. We service it properly.
Free Diagnosis Before Any Repair
We road test your Trooper, inspect the undercarriage, pull codes, and check fluids before recommending anything. No diagnostic fee.
Honest Advice on High-Mileage Trucks
A well-maintained Trooper is worth repairing. We give you a straight cost-versus-value assessment and help you prioritize what matters most for your truck's reliability.
When to Bring Your Isuzu Trooper In
Isuzu stopped selling vehicles in the US around 2009, which means every Trooper on the road now depends entirely on independent shops for service. We work on Troopers regularly and know their failure points well. If yours is showing any of these symptoms, bring it in for a free look — we'll tell you exactly what's going on.
Timing Belt Service — 3.2L and 3.5L V6
The second-generation Trooper's V6 engines use a rubber timing belt that must be replaced every 60,000 miles. Both the 3.2L SOHC and 3.5L DOHC are interference engines — a broken belt destroys the valvetrain. We replace the belt, water pump, tensioner, and idler pulleys as a complete service. If you don't know when the belt was last replaced, assume it needs to be done.
Learn more →Water Pump and Overheating
The Trooper's belt-driven water pump lives behind the timing cover. A failing water pump — typically a weeping seal before a full failure — leads to coolant loss and overheating. Utah's mountain terrain means the Trooper is often working hard at elevation, which amplifies the consequences of a cooling system problem. We replace the water pump at every timing belt service.
Learn more →4WD Engagement Problems or Transfer Case Noise
The Trooper's part-time 4WD system can develop engagement problems — grinding when shifting into 4WD, difficulty disengaging, or a whine from the transfer case — when the transfer case fluid hasn't been serviced. Front locking hubs also wear with use. We inspect the full 4WD system and service what's needed.
Learn more →CV Axle and Front Axle Wear
Front CV axles on four-wheel-drive Troopers see significant stress — especially on trucks used for off-road driving. Clicking during turns or grinding during 4WD use indicates worn CV joints or front axle components. We inspect and replace what's worn.
Learn more →Bouncy Ride — Worn Shocks
High-mileage Troopers with original shocks will have lost most of their damping ability. On a truck used for off-road travel or rough terrain, worn shocks are both a comfort problem and a safety issue — they affect handling and braking stability. We replace shocks with quality units appropriate for the Trooper's weight and use.
Learn more →Brake Service — Pads, Rotors, and Drums
The Trooper uses disc brakes front and rear on later models and disc/drum configurations on earlier ones. High-mileage examples often have brake hardware that's never been fully serviced — aged calipers, hardened hoses, and worn rotors. We inspect the complete system and replace what's actually worn.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Isuzu Troopers in the Salt Lake Valley.
Timing belt urgency on the second-gen Trooper: if you own a 1992–2002 Trooper with the 3.2L or 3.5L V6 and you don't have documentation of a recent timing belt service, schedule it now. These are interference engines — the repair for a broken belt is a partial or full engine rebuild, not a belt. Belt condition on a truck this age is a combination of mileage and elapsed time. Don't wait.
Transfer case fluid on Utah terrain: the Trooper's transfer case fluid should be changed every 60,000 miles under normal use, and more frequently if the truck sees heavy 4WD use — canyon driving, snow, or off-road trails. Old, degraded transfer case fluid causes wear on the chain and gears inside the case that leads to expensive repairs. It's one of the most overlooked fluids on older trucks.
Coolant maintenance at Utah altitude: the Trooper often works harder at altitude than at sea level — elevations around the Wasatch Range can reach 8,000–10,000 feet, where the cooling system is under more thermal stress. Ensure the coolant is fresh, the thermostat is functioning correctly, and the radiator cap holds proper pressure. Old coolant and a marginal thermostat are a recipe for overheating on a mountain pass.
