Isuzu Amigo Repair in South Salt Lake, UT
The Isuzu Amigo is a compact open-top 4x4 — short, light, and built for people who wanted off-road capability without a full-size truck. First-generation models use a simple carbureted or fuel-injected four-cylinder; second-generation models added a V6 option. At our South Salt Lake shop, we service Amigos and appreciate the straightforward mechanicals these trucks are built around.
Full-Service Isuzu Amigo Repair — All Generations
We service all Isuzu Amigo model years at our South Salt Lake shop — first-generation 1989–1994 models and second-generation 1998–2000 models. Every visit starts with a free diagnosis so you know exactly what your Amigo needs before we touch it.

Why Isuzu Amigo Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
The Amigo is a simple, purpose-built 4x4 — and simple mechanicals mean straightforward repairs when they're needed. First-gen Amigos with the 2.3L or 2.6L four-cylinder are about as repair-friendly as it gets. Second-gen models with the 3.2L V6 add the timing belt and interference engine considerations common to all Isuzu V6 trucks. We know both platforms and enjoy working on these light, capable trucks.
Simple, Truck-Based Platform Experience
The Amigo's straightforward body-on-frame construction makes diagnosis direct and repairs accessible. We work on these platforms regularly and know what wears and what holds up.
Clutch and Manual Transmission Work
Most Amigos were sold with manual transmissions — the right gearbox for a truck meant to be used hard. Clutch replacement on Isuzu light-truck platforms is work we do regularly.
Timing Belt Service on V6 Models
Second-generation Amigos with the 3.2L V6 have an interference engine timing belt that must be replaced on schedule. We do this job completely — belt, water pump, tensioner, and idler together.
Free Diagnosis Before Any Repair
We road test, inspect the undercarriage, pull codes if applicable, and check fluids before recommending anything. No diagnostic fee.
When to Bring Your Isuzu Amigo In
The Amigo is a small, light truck that holds up well when maintained — but every Amigo is at least 24 years old now, and age-related failures are the norm. Timing belts, clutches, CV axles, and brake hardware all need attention on trucks of this age. At Scott's, we approach the Amigo as the capable, well-engineered compact 4x4 it is. If your truck is showing any of these symptoms, bring it in for a free look.
Clutch Wear — Manual Transmission Amigos
Most Amigos were sold with manual transmissions, and a light truck used for off-road trails and varied terrain sees real clutch wear. Slipping under load, a high or inconsistent engagement point, or difficulty finding gears means it's time. We replace the full clutch assembly, inspect the flywheel, and verify the hydraulics.
Learn more →Timing Belt — 3.2L V6 Second-Gen Models
The second-generation Amigo with the 3.2L V6 has an interference engine timing belt. At this age and mileage, the rubber belt may be original equipment. Replace it before it fails — a broken belt means engine damage that costs far more than the belt service.
Learn more →CV Axle and Front Axle Wear
Four-wheel-drive Amigos stress the front CV axles during off-road use — steep angles, hard landings, and aggressive terrain all take a toll. Clicking on turns is the sign. We replace the complete axle shaft and inspect the front axle housing for additional damage.
Learn more →Brake Service on Aging Hardware
Original brake hardware on a 25+ year-old Amigo — rubber hoses, caliper pistons, and worn rotors — needs to be assessed honestly. Old hardware that looks acceptable on the surface can fail under hard braking. We inspect the full system and replace what's actually needed.
Learn more →Exhaust Leaks and Loud Exhaust
Exhaust manifold gaskets and flex pipes on old Amigos fail with age, particularly on trucks that have seen off-road use with thermal cycling. Exhaust leaks make the truck loud and can route exhaust toward the occupant area. We inspect the full exhaust and repair what's leaking.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. The Isuzu Amigo is a small, honest truck that deserves honest service. These are simple vehicles with accessible mechanicals — the kind of truck we enjoy working on. Whether your Amigo is a weekend trail runner or a daily driver, we'll give it the attention it needs.
Isuzu is gone from the US market and the Amigo is old enough that most chain shops won't be familiar with it. At Scott's, we treat every vehicle we work on as a car someone depends on — and the Amigo is no different. You'll get a written estimate and a straight answer before we start any work.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Isuzu Amigos in the Salt Lake Valley.
Clutch break-in after replacement on manual Amigos: the Amigo's lightweight body and capable 4WD system make it a tempting truck to use hard immediately after a clutch job. Give the new clutch 500 miles of break-in with moderate driving — varying engagement points, no hard launches, no extended slipping on steep trails. A properly broken-in clutch lasts significantly longer than one that's pushed hard from day one.
4WD use and front axle engagement on older Amigos: first-generation Amigos use manual locking front hubs that should be cycled periodically to prevent them from seizing in the unlocked or locked position. If your hubs haven't been serviced in years, they may resist engagement or disengagement when you need them. We service the front locking hubs as part of any 4WD system inspection.
Rubber component inspection on old Amigos: every rubber component on a 25+ year-old Amigo — CV boots, brake hoses, engine and transmission mounts, exhaust hangers — should be visually inspected annually. Old rubber becomes brittle and cracks, and a cracked CV boot or brake hose that fails on a trail or in traffic is a significant problem. We include a rubber component check in every major service visit.
