Hummer H2 Repair in South Salt Lake, UT
The Hummer H2 is a full-size SUV built on GM's 2500 truck platform, powered by various versions of the 6.0L and 6.2L Vortec V8. These are large, capable vehicles that see hard use and Utah's varied terrain, and they come to us regularly for suspension work, brake service, and cooling system repairs. We know the GMT820 platform well — it's closely related to the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe we also service.
Full-Service Hummer H2 Repair — All Generations
We service all Hummer H2 models at our South Salt Lake shop — 2003 through 2009, including the standard SUV and the SUT pickup variant. Every visit starts with a free diagnosis so you know exactly what your H2 needs before we touch it.

Why Hummer H2 Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
The H2 is a heavy vehicle, and it drives harder on brakes, suspension, and cooling system than a typical half-ton SUV. Owners who use their H2 off-road put additional stress on drivetrain and suspension components. We service the H2 with that in mind — we stock the right brake hardware and suspension parts for a vehicle that weighs over 6,000 pounds, and we don't cut corners on quality.
GM Truck Platform Knowledge
The H2 is built on the GM GMT820 heavy-duty truck platform — closely related to the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and Suburban. We know this platform deeply, which means faster diagnosis and accurate estimates on your H2.
Brake Service for Heavy SUVs
A fully loaded H2 puts enormous stress on brakes. We use quality brake hardware appropriate for the vehicle's weight class and inspect the full hydraulic system — not just the worn pads.
Suspension and Four-Wheel-Drive Service
H2 suspension and 4WD components take a beating from both heavy highway use and off-road excursions. We service the full drivetrain — front and rear axle, transfer case, shocks, and control arm components.
Free Diagnosis, Written Estimate
We road test your H2, pull stored codes, check fluid conditions, and inspect what the symptom points to — before recommending any work. No diagnostic fee.
When to Bring Your Hummer H2 In
The H2's size and weight make certain failure modes more consequential than on a smaller vehicle — brake failure or suspension wear that would merely be annoying on a compact car can be a serious safety issue on a 6,500-pound SUV. The issues below are the ones we see most consistently on H2s in our shop. Don't put these off.
Brake Grinding or Squealing
The H2's weight means the front brakes work extremely hard. High-mileage H2s frequently come in with rotors that have worn past minimum thickness before the owner noticed. Squealing means the wear indicators are contacting the rotor. Grinding means metal on metal. We inspect pads, rotors, calipers, and the full hydraulic system before recommending parts.
Learn more →Water Pump Failure — Vortec V8 Cooling System
The 6.0L and 6.2L Vortec engines in the H2 see water pump failures as mileage climbs. A leaking pump will drip coolant from the weep hole and eventually cause overheating. In Utah's summer heat — especially on grades — an H2 that's losing coolant is a vehicle that's one long uphill away from a serious overheat. We replace the water pump, thermostat, and inspect all hoses as part of a cooling system service.
Learn more →Exhaust Manifold Leaks
The Vortec V8's cast iron exhaust manifolds are known to crack or develop gasket leaks on high-mileage examples — the heavy-load thermal cycling these engines see accelerates the process. An exhaust leak sounds like a ticking or tapping that's loudest when the engine is cold and may quiet down as the metal expands. We inspect the manifolds and repair any leaks before exhaust gases can affect oxygen sensor readings.
Learn more →Front Suspension Clunking — Control Arms and Ball Joints
H2 front suspension components — upper and lower control arm bushings and ball joints — wear under the vehicle's weight and off-road use. Clunking over bumps, uneven tire wear, and steering that feels loose are the symptoms. Ball joint failure on a heavy truck is a safety concern — if you're hearing clunking from the front end, get it inspected.
Learn more →Check Engine Light — Vortec EVAP and O2 Sensor Codes
H2s with the Vortec V8 commonly trigger evaporative emission system codes and oxygen sensor faults as mileage climbs. Some of these are simple fixes; others require more investigation. We read the codes and trace them to the actual cause.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. The H2's GMT820 platform is one we know well through our work on Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban, and GMC Yukon XL trucks that share the same underpinnings. The mechanic who diagnoses your H2 is the one who repairs it — you deal directly with the person doing the work.
H2 owners sometimes find that shops either don't want to work on large trucks or charge premium rates for the privilege. We treat the H2 like any other vehicle on the platform — diagnose it correctly, estimate it honestly, and fix what actually needs fixing. If you need an honest shop for your H2 in the South Salt Lake area, come in.
How We Work With Hummer H2 Drivers
Tell Us What Your H2 Is Doing
Describe the noise, the warning light, the handling change, or the service you know is overdue. Off-road use history is useful context for us.
Free Diagnostic Inspection
We road test the H2, pull stored codes, check fluid levels and condition, and inspect the components related to the symptom — before recommending any work.
Written Estimate Before We Start
You get a plain-language explanation of what we found and a written estimate covering parts and labor. Nothing starts without your approval.
Parts Appropriate for a Heavy Truck
We don't use light-duty brake or suspension parts on a 6,500-pound vehicle. Components are sourced appropriate to the H2's weight class.
Road Test and Pickup Walkthrough
We verify the repair under real driving conditions before you pick up. At pickup we walk you through what was done and anything worth watching.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Hummer H2s in the Salt Lake Valley.
Brake fluid service on a heavy truck: the H2's braking system works harder than a typical half-ton, and brake fluid absorbs moisture over time regardless of mileage. Moisture contamination lowers the boiling point of the fluid and promotes corrosion inside calipers and lines. On a truck this heavy, brake system reliability matters more than on a compact car. Flush the brake fluid every two years or 30,000 miles — it's inexpensive and keeps the hydraulics in top condition.
Transfer case fluid and 4WD operation in Utah: if you use your H2 in 4WD on Utah's winter roads, make sure the transfer case and front axle fluids are fresh. Old, contaminated transfer case fluid causes wear on the clutch packs and can lead to shuddering when the 4WD system engages and disengages. Change transfer case fluid every 50,000 miles, more often if you use 4WD frequently.
Tire wear and alignment on a lifted H2: if your H2 has been lifted, alignment angles that were within spec from the factory may now be out of spec for the new ride height. Improper alignment on a vehicle this size causes rapid and uneven tire wear — and tires for an H2 are expensive. Have the alignment checked after any lift kit installation or if you notice the truck pulling to one side.

“My transmission and clutch went out. Another shop had my car 2 weeks and wanted $5,000. I called Scott's and he went out of his way for my car — did the job in 24 hours for $1,500. Thanks to people like Scott who help out. Thank you again!”
“Went in for an estimate on a brake issue I was having. Scott immediately took the time to look at my vehicle and offered to help shortly after he determined the issue. Was in and out in under an hour and was pleased with the level of work done. Would recommend if you have any car issues they cover under their scope of work! Thanks again, Scott!”
