Why Honda Civic Drivers Choose Scott's Auto

Honda dealers charge $150–170 per hour for Civic service, and your car gets shuffled between a service advisor who writes the ticket and a technician you never meet. At Scott's, one mechanic diagnoses your Civic and does the repair — the same person, start to finish. You get a plain-language explanation of what we found and a written estimate before any work begins.

35 Years of Honda Platform Experience

We've been working on Civics since Scott's opened in 1990 — every generation, every engine family. That institutional knowledge means faster diagnosis and fewer surprises on your bill.

Clutch Specialists for Si and Type R

Clutch replacement is one of our core services. Si and Type R clutch jobs are routine for us — we stock quality OEM-spec kits for every manual Civic generation and know the correct break-in procedures.

We Know the 1.5T Oil Dilution Issue

The 10th and 11th gen 1.5T has a known problem with gasoline contaminating engine oil during short cold-weather trips. We check oil condition and dilution at every visit on these models — not just when you mention it.

Free Diagnosis on Every Civic

We road test, pull codes, and inspect your Civic before recommending anything. You know what's wrong and what it will cost before we start. No diagnostic fee.

When to Bring Your Honda Civic In

We've been servicing Honda Civics at our South Salt Lake shop since 1990 — from carbureted D-series engines to the current turbocharged 1.5T. When a Civic comes in, we road test it first, pull codes if the light is on, and do a full visual inspection before recommending anything. The issues below are the ones we see most consistently across the different Civic generations. If yours is showing any of these symptoms, bring it in and we'll tell you exactly what's going on — no charge for the diagnosis.

Sudden Loud Exhaust — Catalytic Converter Theft

Honda Civic catalytic converters are among the most stolen in Salt Lake City. The precious metals inside Honda cats command high scrap prices, and thieves with a cordless reciprocating saw can remove one in under 90 seconds. If your Civic sounds like a lawnmower when you started it this morning, your cat is almost certainly gone. We handle replacement and can weld on a cat shield to deter future theft.

1.5T Oil Dilution (2016–2021 Civic)

The 1.5-liter turbocharged engine in 10th and 11th gen Civics can develop gasoline contamination in the engine oil — especially during short cold-weather trips where the engine never fully warms up. Fuel from the direct injection system washes into the crankcase. Symptoms include an oil level that reads higher than normal, or oil that smells like gasoline. Left unaddressed, diluted oil loses its lubricating ability and accelerates wear on bearings and cam surfaces. We check oil condition at every visit on 1.5T Civics and advise on shortened oil change intervals if you're doing a lot of short-trip winter driving.

Timing Chain Rattle on High-Mileage K-Series

The K20 and K24 engines in 7th, 8th, and 9th gen Si models are strong powerplants, but high-mileage examples with infrequent oil changes can develop timing chain stretch. The first sign is usually a brief metallic rattle on cold startup that quiets down once oil pressure builds. Don't ignore it — a worn chain can jump timing teeth and cause serious engine damage. We inspect the chain, tensioner, and guides and replace them before you have a bigger problem.

Clutch Wear on Si and Type R Models

Manual Civics driven the way they're meant to be driven will wear clutches faster than a commuter automatic. Si clutches on cars used for spirited driving or occasional track days may need replacement as early as 50,000–60,000 miles. Type R clutches hold up well but are not immune. Signs include a high, grabby engagement point, slipping under hard acceleration, or difficulty finding neutral. We carry quality clutch kits for every manual Civic generation.

Check Engine Light — EGR and O2 Sensor Codes

Older D-series Civics (pre-2006) commonly trigger P0401 EGR flow codes from carbon buildup in the EGR passages — the valve itself may test fine, but the ports are clogged. Newer R-series models see upstream and downstream O2 sensor failures as mileage climbs. Both are straightforward diagnoses. We read the codes, verify the root cause, and fix what actually needs fixing — not just clear the light.

CV Axle Clicking on Turns

That rhythmic clicking you hear when turning — especially noticeable in parking lots at low speed — is a worn CV joint. The joint's protective rubber boot cracks over time, grease escapes, and grit gets in. Once the joint itself is worn, the clicking starts. We replace the complete axle shaft rather than just repacking the boot, which gives you a more durable long-term repair.

Who to Trust for Honda Civic Repair in South Salt Lake

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. We're not a chain and we don't have a service advisor layer — the mechanic who diagnoses your Civic is the one who repairs it. That matters: you get direct answers, accurate estimates, and someone who's accountable for the work from start to finish.

We've worked on Civics from every era — EG hatchbacks with B-series swaps, stock 7th-gen Si daily drivers, 10th-gen 1.5T commuters, and current Type Rs. Whether your car needs a clutch, a catalytic converter replacement, a timing chain, or just an honest answer about whether that noise is something to worry about, you'll get a straight assessment and a written estimate before we start.

How We Work With Honda Civic Drivers

1

Tell Us What Your Civic Is Doing

Describe the noise, the feel, the warning light, or the scheduled service you need. The more detail you give us, the faster we can zero in on the problem.

2

Free Diagnostic Inspection

We road test your Civic, pull any stored codes, check fluid condition and levels, and inspect what the symptom points to — before recommending a single repair.

3

We Explain What We Found

Plain language, no jargon. You get a written estimate covering exactly what needs to be done, what it costs, and why. Nothing starts until you approve it.

4

Only the Work Your Civic Needs

We don't upsell services your car doesn't need. If something can safely wait, we tell you that too — and note it so you can plan ahead.

5

Road Test and Walkthrough at Pickup

We verify the repair under real driving conditions before you pick up. At pickup we walk you through what was done and what to watch for going forward.

Honda Civic Maintenance Tips for Utah Drivers

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Honda Civics in the Salt Lake Valley.

1.5T oil change intervals in Utah winters: if your 2016–2021 Civic does mostly short trips (under 10 minutes) during cold months, shorten your oil change interval to 5,000 miles or less. Short trips prevent the engine from reaching full operating temperature, which means fuel doesn't fully evaporate out of the oil. Don't wait for the maintenance minder — check the dipstick and smell the oil.

Catalytic converter theft prevention: park in well-lit, visible areas whenever possible. A cat shield bolted or welded to your exhaust significantly increases the time required for theft — most thieves move on. We install shields on Civics regularly; ask us about it at your next service.

Clutch fluid on manual Civics: most owners forget that the clutch hydraulic system shares fluid with the brakes. Old brake fluid absorbs moisture, which lowers its boiling point and can cause spongy clutch feel or clutch slave cylinder failure. Flush the clutch/brake fluid every 2–3 years — it's inexpensive and prevents a more costly hydraulic failure down the road.
