Dodge Neon Repair in Salt Lake City, UT

The Dodge Neon may be out of production, but plenty of them are still running as first cars, budget daily drivers, and SRT-4 projects in Salt Lake City. At Scott's, we've been working on Neons since they were new — the 1.8L and 2.0L SOHC and DOHC engines, the T850 manual gearbox, and the boosted 2.4L in the SRT-4.

Full-Service Dodge Neon Repair — All Generations

We service both generations of the Dodge Neon at our South Salt Lake shop — 1st-gen PL chassis and 2nd-gen PT/SX models, including the SRT-4. Every visit starts with a free diagnosis so you know exactly what your Neon needs before we touch it.

Why Dodge Neon Drivers Choose Scott's Auto

Neons have a well-documented set of issues — head gaskets on the first generation, timing belts on both, and clutch wear on manual models that see spirited use. We've handled all of these jobs many times. If you're trying to keep a Neon running on a budget, we'll give you a straight assessment of what actually needs doing now versus what can wait.

1st-Gen Head Gasket Experience

The 2.0L SOHC and DOHC in 1st-gen Neons have a known head gasket weakness — we've done this repair more times than we can count. We do it correctly with a quality MLS gasket and proper resurfacing of the head, not a quick fix that comes back in 20,000 miles.

Manual Transmission and Clutch Specialists

Manual Neons — especially SRT-4s and Neon ACRs — wear clutches faster than base models. We stock quality clutch kits for all Neon manual variants and know the correct hydraulic bleed procedure.

Honest Budget-Vehicle Assessment

A Neon is typically a low-investment vehicle and its owners need honest advice about repair vs. replacement value. We'll tell you straight what makes financial sense.

Free Diagnosis on Every Neon

Road test, code pull, and inspection before any recommendation. No diagnostic fee.

When to Bring Your Dodge Neon In

If you're driving a Neon in Salt Lake City, the repairs below are the ones you're most likely to encounter. We've handled all of them — bring yours in and we'll tell you exactly what's going on.

Timing Belt Service — Non-Negotiable on Any Neon

Both the 1.8L and 2.0L Neon engines are interference engines using timing belts. A broken belt while driving destroys the engine. Many high-mileage Neons have unknown service histories — if you're not certain the belt has been replaced within the last 60,000 miles, treat it as due. We replace belt, water pump, tensioner, and idler together.

Head Gasket Failure on 1st-Gen 2.0L

The 1995–1999 Neon's 2.0L has a documented head gasket weakness. Symptoms include white smoke from the exhaust (coolant burning), an overheating engine, coolant loss without an obvious external leak, or a milky residue on the oil cap. Catching it early — before the head warps — is the difference between a $600 repair and a $1,500 one. We inspect and advise.

Clutch Wear on Manual and SRT-4 Models

Standard Neon clutches last a reasonable amount of time with normal use, but SRT-4 clutches driven hard see wear much earlier. High engagement point, slipping under acceleration, or grinding when shifting are the telltale signs. We handle complete clutch jobs including hydraulic inspection and flywheel evaluation.

Exhaust Leaks — Manifold and Flex Pipe

High-mileage Neons develop exhaust leaks at the manifold flange and the flexible section of the exhaust — producing a ticking or hissing sound that increases with engine speed. In the cabin, it may produce a faint exhaust smell at idle with the windows down. We inspect the full exhaust path and repair leaks correctly.

CV Axle Clicking — FWD Wear

Front-wheel-drive Neons wear CV axles predictably — the classic clicking on turns starts when the outer CV joint is worn. We replace complete axle shafts for a lasting repair rather than just repacking the boot on a joint that's already degraded.

Who to Trust for Dodge Neon Repair in South Salt Lake

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990 — we were servicing 1st-gen Neons when they were new. There's no service advisor layer here: the mechanic who looks at your Neon is the same person who fixes it and explains the bill.

Neons are budget vehicles that need honest repair advice. If the car makes sense to fix, we'll fix it right and at a fair price. If the repair cost genuinely doesn't pencil out relative to the vehicle's value, we'll tell you that too. We've been having that conversation with Neon owners for 30 years.

Dodge Neon Maintenance Tips for Utah Drivers

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Dodge Neons in the Salt Lake Valley.

1st-gen Neon cooling system monitoring: the 1995–1999 Neon's head gasket weakness means the cooling system deserves more attention than on most modern cars. Check the coolant level monthly and look at the oil cap for milky residue (a sign of coolant mixing with oil). Catch a failing head gasket early and the repair is manageable — ignore it until the engine overheats severely and you may be looking at a warped head.

SRT-4 owners: boost leaks and clutch wear go together: if your SRT-4 is losing power under boost and the clutch slips under hard acceleration, address the clutch first — trying to diagnose boost under a slipping clutch makes both problems harder to sort out. We've worked on enough SRT-4s to do both jobs efficiently.

Neon belt replacement and the water pump: the water pump on Neons is driven by the timing belt. If you're replacing the belt, replace the water pump at the same time regardless of whether it's leaking — the labor to reach the pump is mostly done anyway, and a pump that fails between belt changes means pulling the whole assembly apart again for what would have been a $30 additional part.
