Northstar coolant — don't substitute: the Northstar V8 requires GM's DEX-COOL orange coolant — using green coolant or a universal coolant in a DEX-COOL system can cause silicate deposits to form and clog the cooling passages. If your DeVille has ever had coolant mixed, have the system flushed completely before the next fill. Cooling system contamination is one of the fastest ways to create an overheating condition on a Northstar.
Northstar oil consumption: many high-mileage Northstar DeVilles consume some oil between changes — a quart every 1,500–2,000 miles is not uncommon on worn engines. Check the oil level every time you fuel up. Running low on oil accelerates wear on the variable valve timing components and contributes to oil starvation on hard corners. Keep a quart in the trunk if you're driving a high-mileage Northstar regularly.
Utah altitude and Northstar temperature: at Salt Lake City's 4,300-foot elevation, engines run slightly leaner and cooling systems work harder on summer days. On a Northstar DeVille that's already at the limit of its cooling capacity, summer driving in stop-and-go traffic with the AC on is higher risk than a sea-level car. Keep the coolant fresh, the thermostat functioning correctly, and the overflow tank at the right level — especially in July and August.
