The Buick Enclave is a three-row crossover that Utah families depend on heavily — school runs, ski trips, road trips with the whole family loaded in. Our South Salt Lake shop works on Enclaves from the original Lambda-platform models through the current C1 generation, and we know exactly where these vehicles wear.
Full-Service Buick Enclave Repair — All Generations

Why Buick Enclave Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
First-gen Enclaves share the Lambda platform with the GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse — and share the same well-documented 3.6L timing chain issue. We've done enough of these repairs to diagnose the problem efficiently and quote only what the inspection confirms needs replacing, not the entire chain system as a default.
Lambda Platform Timing Chain Experience
We've performed Lambda 3.6L timing chain jobs on Enclaves, Acadias, and Traverses. We know how to distinguish between a tensioner-only fix and a full chain replacement — and that difference matters to your bill.
Free Diagnosis Before Any Quote
We road-test, scan codes, and inspect before recommending anything. On an Enclave with a check engine light or startup rattle, we identify exactly what's failing before giving you a number.
Family Shop, Not a Franchise
We're independently owned. No service advisor middleman, no upsell packages — the mechanic who diagnoses your Enclave is the one who repairs it.
Repairs Done Right the First Time
We use OEM-grade parts on everything we touch and road-test after every repair before you pick up the vehicle.
When to Bring Your Buick Enclave In
Enclave owners often arrive with concerns about a cold-start noise, an overheating gauge, or a vehicle that bounces on Utah's frost-damaged winter roads. These are predictable issues for this platform at mileage. We inspect proactively for all of them when an Enclave comes in. Here's what we see most often.
Timing Chain Rattle on 3.6L First-Gen Enclave
The 3.6L VVT engine in 2008–2017 Enclaves is known for timing chain tensioner wear that leads to chain slack and a rattling noise on cold startup. The noise often clears within 30–60 seconds as oil pressure builds — which makes owners think it's normal. It isn't. Left unaddressed, a stretched chain can skip a cam gear tooth and cause rough running or a no-start. We inspect what's actually worn and replace only what the inspection reveals.
Learn more →Water Pump Failure — Internal Leak Risk
The 3.6L Enclave water pump is driven off the timing chain system. When the pump seal fails, coolant can leak internally into the timing chain area — making what might have been a straightforward pump replacement into a more involved repair. Early symptoms include a sweet coolant smell from the engine bay, a creeping temperature gauge, or a small coolant puddle under the front of the engine. We address it before the internal leak complicates the timing chain system.
Learn more →Strut Wear and Rough Ride
Enclave struts on first-gen models typically wear by 80,000–100,000 miles, producing a bouncy, unsettled ride that's especially noticeable on Utah's frost-heaved winter pavement. A vehicle this size with worn struts handles poorly in an emergency maneuver. We replace in axle pairs and check alignment after installation.
Learn more →Brake Wear on a Heavy Three-Row SUV
A loaded Enclave puts significant stress on its brakes — heavier than most owners account for. Front pads wear first, rotors develop heat scoring, and rear calipers can seize on vehicles that don't see regular brake service. We inspect all four corners and give you an honest assessment of what needs replacing.
Learn more →Check Engine Light and Catalytic Converter Codes
P0420 and P0430 efficiency codes are common on higher-mileage Enclaves. Before recommending catalytic converter replacement — which isn't cheap on a V6 with two cats — we verify whether an oxygen sensor failure or exhaust leak is the actual cause. Correct diagnosis saves you from an unnecessary repair.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. We're not a franchise or a chain — the mechanic who diagnoses your Enclave is the one who fixes it. You get direct communication, a written estimate before anything starts, and a technician who owns the outcome of the repair.
We service Enclaves regularly and know the Lambda platform's known failure points well enough to give you an accurate picture of what your specific vehicle needs. If your Enclave is showing timing chain symptoms, bring it in before the problem advances — early intervention is significantly less expensive than waiting until the chain jumps timing.
How We Work With Buick Enclave Drivers
Describe What Your Enclave Is Doing
Tell us the symptom — cold-start noise, warning light, rough ride, or something else. Include your year and approximate mileage if you know them.
Free Diagnostic Inspection
We road-test, scan codes, and inspect relevant components before recommending anything. On first-gen Enclaves, timing chain condition is part of our standard inspection.
Written Estimate — Plain Language
You get an itemized estimate covering what needs to be done, what it costs, and why. Nothing starts until you approve it.
OEM-Grade Parts and Correct Fluids
We use quality parts and GM-specification fluids on every Enclave repair — not generic substitutes that can shorten the lifespan of the fix.
Road Test and Pickup Walkthrough
We verify the repair with a road test before you pick up. At pickup, we walk you through what was done and flag anything to watch going forward.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Buick Enclaves in the Salt Lake Valley.
Timing chain oil interval on 3.6L Enclave: don't rely solely on the oil life monitor on first-gen Enclaves. The 3.6L VVT engine's timing chain tensioners depend on clean, properly pressurized oil — and degraded oil is the primary cause of the tensioner wear problem this engine is known for. Keep oil changes at or under 5,000 miles and use the correct viscosity oil specified for your model year.
Coolant type matters: the Enclave uses Dex-Cool orange coolant. Mixing Dex-Cool with universal green coolant creates a gel-like substance that clogs radiator passages and accelerates water pump seal failure. If a previous shop added the wrong coolant, the contamination can cause silent damage over time. We test coolant condition at every service visit.
Pre-ski-season suspension check: if your Enclave is your family's mountain vehicle, a fall suspension inspection before ski season is worth scheduling. Worn struts on a heavy three-row SUV are a stability risk on canyon roads — and discovering a strut failure on a snowy mountain road is far worse than catching it in October at our South Salt Lake shop.

5-Star Reviews
What Our Customers Say
Real reviews from Google — 5 stars across the board
“Went in for an estimate on a brake issue I was having. Scott immediately took the time to look at my vehicle and offered to help shortly after he determined the issue. Was in and out in under an hour and was pleased with the level of work done. Would recommend if you have any car issues they cover under their scope of work! Thanks again, Scott!”
“Took my grandson's car in to have the clutch looked at. We thought it might need a new clutch. Scott explained the level of wear and thought it was premature to replace it. He could have just said it needed a new clutch and I wouldn't have blinked an eye. I appreciated the honesty. Only needed a clutch adjustment. I also had him wire up a new set of fog lights and they look and work great. He will definitely get our business in the future.”
“Knew what he was doing. Diagnosed my truck's clutch in 15 mins. Picked up the part and I was on my way in an hour. Reasonable price, too.”
“I'm never using a different auto-mechanic again!”
