Why BMW M5 Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
M5 owners often have to choose between a dealer that charges premium rates and an independent shop that isn't familiar with the car's specific demands. We've worked on enough M5s to know which corners to look in on each generation — the E39's cooling vulnerabilities, the E60's SMG pump issues, the F10's turbo waste gate rattles. You get independent-shop pricing with generation-specific knowledge.
E39 M5 Cooling System Expertise
The S62 V8 in the E39 M5 is one of BMW's great engines — and it's hard on cooling systems. Expansion tank failures, brittle hose connections, and water pump gaskets are the most common causes of overheating. We know exactly where to look and what to replace proactively.
Clutch and Manual Transmission Service
The E39 M5's six-speed manual is one of the finest gearboxes BMW ever built. When the clutch needs replacement — and it eventually does — we handle it with the care that transmission deserves. We also service the E28 and E34 manual cars.
Brake System Service for High-Power Sedans
An M5 with 550–625 hp requires brakes that can handle repeated hard use. We stock appropriate pads and rotors for all M5 generations and inspect caliper condition and brake fluid quality on every visit.
Honest Assessment, Written Estimates
M5 repairs can be expensive. We give you a full written estimate before starting anything and explain what's urgent versus what can wait. No pressure, no upselling.
When to Bring Your BMW M5 In
When an M5 comes into our South Salt Lake shop, we start by understanding which generation it is and what that generation's specific failure patterns look like. An E39 and an F10 have very different weak points, and diagnosing one like the other wastes your money. We road test first, pull codes, and inspect methodically — then we give you a clear written estimate.
Cooling System Failure — E39 and E60
The E39 M5's S62 V8 is particularly sensitive to cooling system neglect. Expansion tanks crack, coolant hose connectors become brittle, and water pump gaskets weep — often before there's any warning light. The E60's V10 S85 engine has its own cooling demands. We pressure-test the system and replace the plastic components proactively when they show age.
Learn more →Clutch Wear — E28, E34, E39 Manual Models
Manual M5 clutches are high-clamping-force units that wear faster on cars used as intended. An E39 M5 with 100,000 miles and spirited driving history is likely on its second clutch. We replace the complete clutch kit and inspect the dual-mass flywheel for signs of wear that would shorten the new clutch's life.
Learn more →Brake Fade and Wear Under Hard Use
M5 drivers stress brake systems. The factory pads on most M5 generations are adequate for normal use but can fade during sustained hard driving — canyon descents, mountain passes, or aggressive highway use. Glazed pads, scored rotors, and low brake fluid are the most common findings when M5 owners report a soft or inconsistent pedal.
Learn more →Check Engine Light — Catalytic and Emissions Faults
The E60 M5's V10 S85 uses ten individual throttle bodies and has a complex emissions system that can trigger codes from a variety of sources — throttle actuator wear, catalytic efficiency faults, and oxygen sensor aging are all common. We read the full fault tree rather than reacting to just the first code.
Learn more →Exhaust System Noise
M5 exhaust systems are complex and often modified by previous owners. We see cracked manifold gaskets, failed resonator flex sections, and loose heat shields on high-mileage examples. An exhaust leak on a high-displacement engine is not a noise to ignore — the gases end up in the engine bay.
Learn more →Suspension Wear — Struts and Shock Absorbers
The M5's sport-tuned suspension is set up for high-speed stability, not longevity. At higher mileage, the shock absorbers lose their damping and the car starts to feel floaty or wallowy at speed. We inspect and replace struts and shocks with quality replacements appropriate for the vehicle's use.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. M5 owners expect more than most — they want a mechanic who understands the car, not just someone who can change oil and clear codes. At Scott's, the person who diagnoses your M5 is the same person who repairs it, and we approach each generation with the knowledge those cars require.
We've worked on M5s from the original E28 through the current F90. If your car needs a cooling system overhaul, a clutch replacement, fresh brake components, or an honest second opinion on what a dealer told you, bring it in. We'll tell you what we found, what it costs, and what can wait — in plain language, with a written estimate before any work begins.
How We Work With BMW M5 Drivers
Tell Us What Your M5 Is Doing
Describe the symptom — the noise, the feel, the light. M5 owners usually know their cars well, and that context helps us narrow down the inspection quickly.
Free Diagnostic Inspection
We road test the M5, scan fault codes with full freeze frame data, and inspect the system the symptom points to before recommending any repair.
Written Estimate, Plain Language
We explain what we found and what it will cost. Every item is on the written estimate before we start. Nothing happens without your go-ahead.
Only the Work Your M5 Needs
We don't pad the ticket. What's urgent gets done; what can wait gets noted so you can plan. You stay in control of the repair scope.
Road Test and Pickup Walkthrough
We drive the M5 after every repair to confirm the fix. At pickup we walk you through what was done and what to keep an eye on.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing BMW M5s in the Salt Lake Valley.
E39 M5 cooling system: if you own one of these cars, do not wait for an overheating event to address cooling system maintenance. The expansion tank, thermostat housing, and upper coolant hoses are made of plastic that becomes brittle with age — independent of mileage. A proactive replacement of these items before a Utah summer road trip is far less expensive than a tow and an engine teardown.
Brake fluid for canyon driving: Utah's canyons — Millcreek, Big Cottonwood, American Fork — put real heat into M5 brakes during sustained descents. The factory brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which drops its boiling point. M5 owners who drive the canyons regularly should change brake fluid every year or two, not just every other service interval.
Oil quality on high-output M engines: all BMW M engines — but especially the S62 V8 and S85 V10 — are sensitive to oil quality. Use BMW-recommended LL-01 spec full synthetic and don't stretch intervals past the factory recommendation. If you do track days or spirited canyon runs, change the oil after each event regardless of mileage. These engines earn their reputations through proper maintenance.

What Our Customers Say
Real reviews from Google — 5 stars across the board
“So glad we found Scott's auto. Great, honest mechanic!”
“Scott has always preferred good work on my vehicles. I had his shop replace the driveline on my 2014 VW Touareg — not an easy job. The cost was cheaper than another shop. They did a great job. I had them rebuild the alternator because it was too cold for me to do it. The cost was better than I thought. I am very pleased with their work. Scott has always given me good solid advice.”
“I worked for Scott many years ago and he has always been a very magnanimous and honest person. He only lets honest mechanics work in his shop. He makes sure that good, quality work is performed. He was great to work with and great to work for. One hell of a guy, running an honest shop with good rates.”
