Why BMW 6 Series Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
The 6 Series owner is rarely looking for the cheapest option — they want their car maintained correctly and repaired by someone who understands what it is. At Scott's, we've worked on 6 Series from E24 carbureted coupes to F12 convertibles with modern turbocharged sixes. We give these cars the careful attention they warrant and give you honest assessments about what needs work versus what's fine.
E24 and Classic BMW Experience
The E24 6 Series is an older car that requires patience and parts knowledge. We work on classic BMWs and understand the mechanical realities of a 30–40 year old car — what's worth repairing, what parts are still available, and how to make a sound diagnosis on a vehicle without modern electronics.
E63 V10 and V8 Cooling Systems
The E63/E64's 4.8i V8 and the M6's S85 V10 have well-documented cooling system vulnerabilities. We know the pressure points — expansion tanks, coolant hose connectors, and water pump gaskets — and recommend proactive service to prevent stranding events.
Suspension Expertise on Grand Touring Cars
6 Series suspension is set up for high-speed stability and long-range comfort. Worn shocks and struts on a grand tourer feel different from a sport sedan — the car gets floaty at highway speed and vague over lane changes. We match replacement components to the car's intended character.
Free Diagnosis, Written Estimates
We road test, scan codes, and inspect before recommending anything. You get a clear written estimate before we start. No diagnostic fee on any 6 Series.
When to Bring Your BMW 6 Series In
When a 6 Series arrives at our South Salt Lake shop, we take the time to understand which generation it is and what the owner is experiencing. These are not high-volume repair cars, and the failure patterns differ significantly between an E63 and an F12. We road test the car, scan the fault history, and inspect methodically before giving you a written estimate.
Cooling System Failure — E63 and F12/F13
Both the E63 4.8i V8 and the F12/F13 turbocharged six-cylinder use cooling system architectures with known plastic component failure points. The expansion tank, thermostat housing, and coolant hose barbs become brittle over time — and a 6 Series overheating event on US-89 going home from Park City is an expensive tow. We pressure test and proactively replace these items on every cooling service visit.
Learn more →Brake System Wear and Caliper Service
The 6 Series — particularly the M6 and 650i variants — has large, capable brakes that still wear predictably with use. We see caliper slide pin corrosion causing uneven pad wear regularly on E63 and F13 models in Utah, where road salt winters and dry summers cycle caliper components aggressively. A full brake inspection catches this before it causes rotor damage.
Learn more →Suspension Wear — Shock Absorbers and Struts
A 6 Series with worn shock absorbers loses its composure at highway speed — the characteristic smooth, planted feel that makes these cars so good at covering distance gives way to vagueness and float. On F-series cars with adaptive dampers, the dampers can lose their adjustment range before the hardware fully fails. We inspect and replace with quality parts appropriate for each generation.
Learn more →Exhaust System Noise
6 Series exhaust systems are large, complex, and sometimes modified by previous owners. On E63 and F13 M6 models, manifold gasket leaks produce a ticking under load that's most noticeable on cold starts. Failed resonator hangers and cracked flex sections are common on higher-mileage examples. We inspect the full system from manifold to tip.
Learn more →Check Engine Light — Emissions and Engine Management
The F12/F13 turbocharged six-cylinder platform generates check engine lights from boost deviation codes, VANOS faults, and catalytic efficiency issues as it ages. E63 V8 models can trigger codes from oxygen sensor aging and secondary air system faults. We read the full fault tree and test under driving conditions to identify the actual cause.
Learn more →CV Axle Wear on Rear-Wheel-Drive Models
The 6 Series rear-axle CV joints and driveshaft flex discs can develop wear at higher mileage — particularly on cars that have done a lot of highway miles. A vibration that appears at speed or a clunk under load from the rear of the car often points to flex disc wear or a rear CV joint. We inspect the driveline as part of any vibration complaint.
Learn more →Who to Trust for BMW 6 Series Repair in South Salt Lake
Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. 6 Series owners are typically very particular about where their cars get serviced, and they have every right to be — these are expensive vehicles with complex mechanical systems and long repair histories that matter. At our shop, the mechanic who inspects your 6 Series is the one who repairs it, with no hand-offs or service advisor layers in between.
We've worked on 6 Series from E24 coupes to current F12 convertibles. Whether your car needs a cooling system overhaul, fresh brake components, suspension work, or a careful diagnosis on a noise that's been developing for a while, we give you a written estimate and a plain-language explanation before any work begins.
How We Work With BMW 6 Series Drivers
Tell Us What Your 6 Series Is Doing
Describe the symptom — noise, warning light, handling change, or a service it's due for. 6 Series owners often have detailed observations, and that helps us focus the inspection.
Free Diagnostic Inspection
We road test the 6 Series, scan fault codes and freeze frame history, and inspect the cooling system, suspension, and brake system before recommending anything.
Written Estimate, No Surprises
Every recommended repair is on a written estimate before we start. We explain what's urgent, what can wait, and why — in plain language.
Only the Work Your 6 Series Needs
We repair what needs repairing and note what can be deferred. You stay in control of the scope and the budget.
Road Test and Pickup Walkthrough
We drive the 6 Series after every repair to confirm the fix feels right at speed. At pickup we walk you through what was done and what to monitor.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing BMW 6 Seriess in the Salt Lake Valley.
E63 cooling system: if you own an E63 4.8i or M6, the cooling system deserves proactive attention regardless of mileage. These cars are now 15–20 years old, and the plastic cooling components — expansion tanks, hose barbs, thermostat housing — become brittle from age alone. A cooling system inspection and preemptive replacement of plastic items before a Utah summer road trip is strongly recommended.
6 Series highway use and suspension: these cars spend a lot of time at highway speeds, and that takes a specific toll on shock absorbers — the consistent, sustained load wears dampers differently than city driving. If your 6 Series has 60,000 miles or more and the last shock replacement is unknown, have them inspected. A grand tourer with worn shocks loses the character that makes the car worth owning.
Utah emissions and catalytic converters: F12/F13 6 Series models will eventually face Utah emissions testing — and catalytic efficiency codes (P0420/P0430) are common on higher-mileage examples. If your car is triggering emissions failures, bring it in for a diagnosis before investing in new catalytic converters. Sometimes the fault is an oxygen sensor or an exhaust leak upstream of the cat, not the cat itself.
