Scion xB Repair in South Salt Lake, UT
The Scion xB is one of those cars that divided opinion visually but won people over with its practicality — the boxy proportions created a genuinely roomy interior in a compact footprint. The first-generation NCP31 is a Toyota Echo derivative with a nearly bulletproof 1NZ-FE engine, while the second-generation AZE151 grew in every dimension and gained a more powerful 2.4L engine. Both generations have devoted owners in the Salt Lake Valley, and we service both at our South Salt Lake shop.
Full-Service Scion xB Repair — All Generations
We service all Scion xB generations at our South Salt Lake shop — the 2004–2006 first-generation NCP31 and the 2008–2015 second-generation AZE151. Every visit starts with a free diagnosis so you know exactly what your xB needs before we touch it.

Why Scion xB Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
The first-gen xB's 1NZ-FE engine is genuinely hard to kill with normal maintenance, but the second-gen's 2AZ-FE four-cylinder has well-documented timing chain and water pump issues that catch owners by surprise. We've dealt with both extensively. If your xB has a timing chain rattle or is losing coolant, we know exactly what we're looking at.
Both xB Generations Serviced
The 1NZ-FE and 2AZ-FE are different engines with different service needs. We know both platforms, stock the right parts for each, and don't treat them as interchangeable.
2AZ-FE Timing Chain and Water Pump Experience
The second-gen xB's 2AZ-FE has a known timing chain wear issue and a water pump that runs inside the engine on the timing chain. We handle both repairs as a complete service — doing it right the first time so you don't have to revisit it.
Honest Estimates on Budget Vehicles
The xB is an economy car, and we price accordingly. We give you fair estimates and tell you honestly if a repair cost doesn't make sense relative to the car's value.
Free Diagnosis on Every xB
We road test your car, pull stored codes, check fluid condition, and inspect what the symptom points to before recommending anything. Written estimate, no diagnostic fee.
When to Bring Your Scion xB In
Both xB generations are reliable when maintained, but the second-generation's 2AZ-FE engine has failure points that require proactive attention. The issues below cover both platforms and reflect what we see regularly in our South Salt Lake shop. If your xB is showing any of these symptoms, come in for a free look.
Timing Chain Rattle on 2nd-Gen xB
The 2.4L 2AZ-FE in the second-generation xB is prone to timing chain and guide wear at high mileage, especially on cars with inconsistent oil change history. The symptom is a metallic rattle on cold startup that quiets after the engine warms up. We replace the chain, tensioner, and guides before the worn chain can jump timing.
Learn more →Water Pump Failure on 2AZ-FE
The second-gen xB's water pump is an internal component — it runs on the timing chain inside the engine rather than as an external belt-driven pump. When it fails, coolant enters the engine oil or the engine loses cooling capacity. We replace the water pump and timing chain together since the engine has to come apart for both.
Learn more →CV Axle Clicking on Turns
Both xB generations are front-wheel-drive and wear CV axles as mileage climbs. A clicking sound on low-speed turns is the outer CV joint telling you the grease is gone and the joint is worn. We replace the complete axle shaft for a reliable repair.
Learn more →Brake Wear — Pads and Rotors
xB brakes are straightforward and relatively inexpensive to service. Front pads wear first. A squealing that occurs on every brake application is the wear indicator contacting the rotor. We inspect the full system and give you a written estimate.
Learn more →Check Engine Light — O2 Sensor and EVAP Codes
High-mileage xBs regularly trigger oxygen sensor faults and evaporative emission codes. We read the codes and find the actual root cause before recommending parts.
Learn more →Strut Wear and Bouncy Ride
xBs with 100,000+ miles often have worn front struts — the car feels like it floats over bumps and doesn't settle quickly after a dip. Worn struts affect tire wear and braking distance, not just comfort. We inspect and replace as needed.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. We work on Toyota-platform economy cars regularly — the xB's 1NZ-FE and 2AZ-FE engines are familiar to us, and the timing chain and water pump issues on the second-generation car are something we've dealt with many times. Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Scion xBs in the Salt Lake Valley.
2AZ-FE oil change intervals: the second-generation xB's engine is sensitive to oil cleanliness. Stretching oil changes beyond 5,000 miles accelerates timing chain and guide wear. If you're not sure when the last oil change was done or what oil is in the engine, bring it in — we'll drain it, inspect the condition, and refill with quality oil. Old, darkened oil in a 2AZ-FE is a warning sign for the chain.
Internal water pump warning signs: on the second-gen xB, the internal water pump fails in a way that's easy to miss until it's serious. If you notice white residue around the timing cover, coolant level that drops slowly without an obvious external leak, or oil that looks slightly milky, these are signs the water pump seal is weeping into the engine. Bring it in before it becomes a full failure.
Utah emissions on older xBs: first-generation xBs (2004–2006) are over 20 years old and in some Utah counties may qualify for an age-based emissions exemption. Check with the Utah DMV or your county's emissions program to confirm your specific vehicle's status before paying for an emissions repair on a car that may no longer require testing.

What Our Customers Say
Real reviews from Google — 5 stars across the board
“Scott put a new clutch in my Jeep, got it done the same day for a really good price and got us back on the road. I would recommend him to anyone who asked!”
“I have taken my vehicles to many other mechanics before I found this place. They are absolutely the best — they won't give you the run around, they won't expect you to go find a bolt they broke (yes, that happened to me once), they will give you peace of mind. I cannot stress enough how much better Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair is than the competition. Even if you like your mechanic now, give them a try and let them wow you.”
“So glad we found Scott's auto. Great, honest mechanic!”
“Scott is a great guy! Honest and to the point. Definitely saved me some money by not taking advantage of something I thought needed done. I will return.”
