Why Mercury Cougar Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
The final-generation Cougar — the 1999–2002 front-wheel-drive model built on the Ford Contour/Mondeo platform — is the Cougar we see most often in our shop. It uses a manual transmission that's popular with younger drivers, a Zetec four-cylinder with a specific timing belt service requirement, and CV axles that wear predictably. For the classic generations, we work on them case by case — these are typically enthusiast vehicles where the owner knows the car well.
Final-Gen Cougar Clutch and Manual Transmission Work
The 1999–2002 Cougar with the manual gearbox is exactly the kind of car we specialize in. Clutch replacement, clutch hydraulics, and transmission service are core work for us.
Zetec Timing Belt Service
The Zetec four-cylinder in the final-gen Cougar uses a timing belt that must be replaced on schedule. We do this job correctly — belt, water pump, tensioner, and idler together.
Free Diagnosis Every Visit
We road test, inspect, and pull codes before recommending a repair. No diagnostic fee, no guessing.
Classic and Modern Cougar Generations Welcome
Whether you have a final-gen FWD Cougar or a classic generation V8, we'll assess what your car needs and tell you honestly what makes sense to repair.
When to Bring Your Mercury Cougar In
The final-generation 1999–2002 Cougar is the version we service most regularly — it's a sporty FWD coupe with a manual transmission option that attracts enthusiastic drivers, and those drivers tend to push the clutch hard and ride the car aggressively. The Zetec platform also has specific timing and cooling service requirements that are often missed. If your Cougar is showing any of these symptoms, bring it in for a free diagnosis.
Clutch Slipping or High Engagement Point
The manual Cougar with the 2.0L or 2.5L engine is a fun driver's car, but clutches wear — particularly on cars driven spiritedly. A clutch that slips under hard acceleration, grabs high on the pedal, or has difficulty finding neutral is telling you it's time. We replace the clutch assembly, inspect the flywheel, and verify the hydraulics so the job is done completely.
Learn more →Timing Belt Service — Zetec Four-Cylinder
The 2.0L Zetec in the 1999–2002 Cougar uses a rubber timing belt on a 60,000-mile replacement interval. It is an interference engine — a broken belt destroys valves. We replace the belt, water pump, tensioner, and idler pulleys as a complete service. Don't let this one go overdue.
Learn more →CV Axle Clicking on Turns
The front-wheel-drive final-gen Cougar relies on CV axles that see more stress on a car that's driven hard. Clicking on low-speed turns is the first sign of a worn outer joint. We replace the complete axle shaft for a proper fix.
Learn more →Squealing or Grinding Brakes
Cougars driven enthusiastically go through brake pads faster than average commuter cars. Squealing is the wear indicator — grinding means you've hit the backing plate and are cutting into the rotor. Get brake noise addressed before it becomes a more expensive repair.
Learn more →Rough Ride or Wandering Handling
The Cougar's suspension was tuned for a sporty feel from the factory, but worn struts make the car feel loose and unpredictable — particularly on Utah's canyon roads and uneven pavement. We inspect and replace struts and shocks to restore the handling precision these cars were designed to deliver.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. The Cougar spans an enormous range of generations — from classic pony cars to the final FWD coupe — and we approach each one based on what it actually is mechanically. For the 1999–2002 generation, we do clutch, timing belt, CV axle, and brake work routinely. For classic generations, we'll assess what your specific car needs.
Mercury is gone and dealers stopped supporting these cars years ago. Whether your Cougar is a daily driver or a car you're keeping alive because you love it, you'll get a straight assessment and a written estimate before we touch anything. No upsells, no surprises.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Mercury Cougars in the Salt Lake Valley.
Timing belt on the 1999–2002 Cougar Zetec: the 2.0L Zetec is an interference engine — if the timing belt breaks, the repair bill is the cost of an engine rebuild or replacement, not a timing belt. The 60,000-mile interval is not a suggestion. If you bought a used Cougar without service records, assume the belt hasn't been done and schedule it. We replace the water pump and tensioner at the same time because the labor cost to do them separately is wasteful.
Clutch fluid on manual Cougars: the Cougar's clutch hydraulic system uses brake fluid that absorbs moisture over time. Old, moisture-contaminated fluid lowers the boiling point of the hydraulic system and can cause a spongy or inconsistent clutch pedal. Flush the clutch fluid every 2–3 years. It's a quick, inexpensive service that prevents premature slave cylinder failure.
Strut inspection on performance-driven Cougars: the final-gen Cougar is a fun car to drive, but enthusiast-driven examples often have high-mileage struts that are long past their useful life. Worn struts don't just affect ride comfort — they compromise cornering stability and braking performance on Utah's canyon roads. If your Cougar feels vague or floaty in corners, have the struts inspected.
