Why GMC Acadia Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
First-generation Acadias have a well-known timing chain problem that dealerships often quote at alarming prices. We know this repair thoroughly, know what actually needs replacing versus what can be serviced, and we give you an itemized estimate before the first bolt comes off.
Known Lambda Platform Timing Chain Experience
The 3.6L LLT in first-gen Acadias is known for timing chain issues. We've done enough of these to know exactly what to inspect, what to replace, and what's still serviceable — so you don't pay for parts you don't need.
Free Diagnosis — No Guessing
We pull codes, road-test, and inspect before quoting anything. On Acadias, that upfront diagnosis often prevents owners from authorizing the wrong repair.
Family Shop, No Franchise Pressure
We're independently owned. No service advisor pushing service packages — just a mechanic telling you what your Acadia needs and what it doesn't.
Repairs Completed, Not Just Diagnosed
We don't just diagnose and send you on your way. We fix what we find, with quality parts and a road test before you pick up.
When to Bring Your GMC Acadia In
Acadia owners often come to us after getting an alarming estimate somewhere else. We start every visit with a free diagnostic inspection — road test, codes, and a look at the specific concern — before quoting anything. First-gen Acadias in particular have a set of well-known issues we check proactively. Here's what we see most often.
Timing Chain Noise on 3.6L First-Gen Acadia
The 3.6L LLT engine in 2007–2016 Acadias has a documented timing chain stretch problem. The first symptom is usually a rattling or whirring noise on cold startup that clears up within a minute. Ignore it long enough and the chain skips a tooth, triggering rough running or a no-start. We inspect the chain, tensioners, and guides and replace what's actually worn — not every part in the system.
Learn more →Strut Wear and Suspension Noise
First-gen Acadias develop clunking or bouncing over rough roads as the struts wear — often by 80,000–100,000 miles. This is a common complaint on Utah roads, which take a beating from winter freeze-thaw cycles. We replace struts in axle pairs and recheck alignment to make sure the repair holds.
Learn more →Brake Wear — Front and Rear
Acadias wear front brakes predictably, but rear brake calipers can seize on older models — especially if brake fluid hasn't been changed regularly. A pulsating pedal, a pull to one side, or squealing from the rear are all reasons to bring it in. We inspect the full brake system and replace only what needs replacing.
Learn more →Water Pump Failure on 3.6L
The water pump on the 3.6L Acadia runs off the timing chain system — when the pump begins to fail, coolant leaks internally and can contaminate the timing chain area. It's important to catch this early. Overheating, a puddle of coolant under the engine, or a sweet coolant smell from under the hood are the warning signs.
Learn more →Catalytic Converter Issues and Check Engine Light
High-mileage Acadias frequently trigger P0420 or P0430 codes — catalytic converter efficiency below threshold. Before replacing the cats, we verify the code isn't caused by an oxygen sensor or exhaust leak, which are far cheaper fixes. When the cat is genuinely failing, we replace with OEM-quality units.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. We work on Acadias regularly and know the first-gen Lambda platform's quirks — the timing chain issues, the suspension wear patterns, the water pump failures — well enough to give you an accurate diagnosis without a fishing expedition.
We're not going to quote you a full timing chain replacement before we've actually confirmed how much of the system needs work. Our process is: free diagnosis, written estimate, your approval, then the repair. The mechanic who looks at your Acadia is the one who fixes it, and you can talk to them directly. Most Acadia repairs finish same-day or next-day.
How We Work With GMC Acadia Drivers
Tell Us Your Acadia's Symptoms
Describe the noise, light, or handling issue. Mention your year and whether it's the first or second generation if you know — it helps us look up known issues before you arrive.
Free Diagnostic Inspection
We road-test, scan codes, and inspect the relevant components — all at no charge. On first-gen Acadias, we always check timing chain condition as part of the baseline.
Written Estimate — No Surprises
You get a written, itemized estimate before we begin. We explain what needs to be done now versus what can wait, and we don't pressure you either direction.
Quality Parts and Correct Fluids
We use OEM-grade components and the correct GM-specification fluids — not generic substitutes that can accelerate the wear problems Acadias are prone to.
Road Test and Walkthrough at Pickup
We road-test your Acadia after the repair to verify the fix. At pickup, we go over what was done and note anything to watch at the next service.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing GMC Acadias in the Salt Lake Valley.
Timing chain oil change interval: first-gen Acadia owners with the 3.6L engine should treat 5,000 miles or six months as their maximum oil change interval — not the 7,500 miles the oil life monitor may suggest. These engines are particularly sensitive to oil quality, and the timing chain tensioners rely on clean, pressurized oil to maintain chain tension. Deferred oil changes are the primary cause of the chain wear problem this platform is known for.
Know your Acadia's strut condition before ski season: Utah's canyon roads to Alta, Snowbird, and Park City are rough at the best of times. If your Acadia is bouncing, wallowing in turns, or the steering feels imprecise, worn struts are likely. A quick inspection in October saves you from dealing with a handling problem during a December snowstorm.
Coolant color matters: the 3.6L Acadia uses Dex-Cool orange coolant, and mixing it with green universal coolant creates a gel that clogs the cooling system and destroys the water pump. If a previous shop added the wrong coolant type, the mixing damage may already be underway. We check coolant condition at every service visit — if we see green in an orange-coolant system, we'll tell you.

5-Star Reviews
What Our Customers Say
Real reviews from Google — 5 stars across the board
“Scott has always preferred good work on my vehicles. I had his shop replace the driveline on my 2014 VW Touareg — not an easy job. The cost was cheaper than another shop. They did a great job. I had them rebuild the alternator because it was too cold for me to do it. The cost was better than I thought. I am very pleased with their work. Scott has always given me good solid advice.”
“What a smart no nonsense guy. Really don't think there's a better mechanic in the Valley. Scott's replaced my Ford Edge's transmission, worked on my Honda and gonna do some work on my new Tundra I'm sure. Take it to Scott's not the dealership. 10 STARS!”
“Great place, affordable, great work and fast.”
“Scott's a great guy. Always there when the chips are down.”
