Why Ford Mustang Drivers Choose Scott's Auto

A Mustang — especially a GT — deserves a mechanic who treats it like more than another ticket. Ford dealers charge dealer rates and shuffle your car between a writer and a tech. At Scott's, one mechanic diagnoses and repairs your Mustang start to finish, and explains exactly what your car needs before any work begins.

Clutch Specialists for GT and Manual Mustangs

Clutch replacement is one of our core services. Fox-body, S197, and S550 GT clutch jobs are routine for us — we use quality OEM-spec kits and follow the correct break-in procedure for each platform.

35 Years of Ford V8 Experience

We've worked on Mustangs since Scott's opened in 1990 — pushrod 5.0s, modular 4.6Ls, and the Coyote. That history means a faster, more confident diagnosis on your car.

We Understand Enthusiast Use

A Mustang driven the way it's meant to be driven wears clutches, brakes, and tires faster. We size parts and service intervals to how you actually drive — not just generic mileage charts.

Free Diagnosis on Every Mustang

We road test, scan for codes, and inspect your Mustang before recommending anything. You know what's wrong and what it costs before we start. No diagnostic fee.

When to Bring Your Ford Mustang In

We've been servicing Ford Mustangs at our South Salt Lake shop since 1990 — from Fox-body 5.0s to the current Coyote-powered GTs. When a Mustang comes in, we road test it, scan for any stored codes, and inspect the clutch, brakes, and driveline before recommending anything. The issues below are the ones we see most consistently across Mustang generations. If yours shows any of these signs, bring it in and we'll tell you exactly what's going on — no charge for the diagnosis.

Clutch Wear on GT and Manual Models

Manual Mustangs — and GTs in particular — wear clutches faster than a commuter automatic, especially when driven hard or used for occasional track days. Signs include a high, grabby engagement point, slipping under hard acceleration, or a burning smell after spirited driving. We carry quality clutch kits for every manual Mustang generation and resurface or replace the flywheel as needed.

Brake Wear from Spirited and Canyon Driving

Mustangs that see canyon roads and enthusiast driving go through brakes quickly. Pulsation through the pedal, squealing, or longer stopping distances all mean the pads or rotors are due. We service the full brake system and can fit performance-oriented pads if your car sees hard use.

Timing Chain Wear on Coyote and Modular V8s

High-mileage 4.6L and 5.0L Coyote engines can develop timing chain stretch and tensioner wear, especially with stretched oil change intervals. The first sign is usually a brief metallic rattle on cold startup. Don't ignore it — a worn chain can jump timing and cause serious damage. We inspect the chains, guides, and tensioners and replace them before that happens.

Grinding When Shifting a Manual

A Mustang manual that grinds going into gear — often second or third — points to worn synchros or, frequently, a clutch that isn't fully releasing. We diagnose whether it's the clutch hydraulics, the clutch itself, or the transmission, so you fix the real cause instead of guessing.

Loud Exhaust and Aging Components

Mustang exhaust systems take a beating — and on Utah's salted winter roads, pipe sections, hangers, and connections rust through over time. A sudden change in exhaust tone or a rattle underneath usually means a cracked or rusted-out section. We diagnose the leak and repair or replace the affected components.

Worn Struts and a Sloppy Ride

High-mileage Mustangs develop worn struts and shocks that hurt handling — body roll in corners, nose-dive under braking, and a floaty feel over bumps. For a car meant to be driven with confidence, that's worth fixing. We inspect the suspension and replace worn struts and shocks to restore controlled, planted handling.

Who to Trust for Ford Mustang Repair in South Salt Lake

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operating at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. We're not a chain and there's no service-advisor layer — the mechanic who diagnoses your Mustang is the one who repairs it. You get direct answers, accurate estimates, and someone accountable for the work from start to finish.

We've worked on Mustangs from every era — Fox-body 5.0 GTs, SN95 Cobras, S197 and S550 Coyotes, and EcoBoost daily drivers. Whether your car needs a clutch, brakes, a timing chain inspection, or an honest opinion on a noise, you'll get a straight assessment and a written estimate before we start.

How We Work With Ford Mustang Drivers

1

Tell Us What Your Mustang Is Doing

Describe the noise, the shift feel, the warning light, or the scheduled service you need. The more detail you give us, the faster we can pin down the problem.

2

Free Diagnostic Inspection

We road test your Mustang, scan for stored codes, check fluid condition, and inspect the clutch, brakes, and driveline — before recommending a single repair.

3

We Explain What We Found

Plain language, no jargon. You get a written estimate covering exactly what your Mustang needs, what it costs, and why. Nothing starts until you approve it.

4

Only the Work Your Mustang Needs

We fit the right parts — OEM-spec or performance-oriented to match how you drive. If a repair can safely wait, we tell you and note it so you can plan ahead.

5

Road Test and Walkthrough at Pickup

We verify the repair under real driving conditions before you pick up — clutch engagement, brake feel, and handling. At pickup we walk you through what was done.

Ford Mustang Maintenance Tips for Utah Drivers

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Ford Mustangs in the Salt Lake Valley.

If you store your Mustang for the winter — common with GTs and classics here — change the oil before it sits, keep the fuel tank full to limit condensation, and put the battery on a maintainer. A proper layup makes spring startup far easier on the engine.

Canyon roads are hard on Mustang brakes. After a summer of Wasatch driving, have the pads and rotors inspected — heat-cycled rotors can warp and pads wear unevenly. Catching it early means a pad job instead of pads and rotors.

Utah's salted winter roads attack Mustang exhaust and brake lines from underneath. Each spring, have the underside checked for rust on exhaust sections, hangers, and brake hardware — early repair is far cheaper than a full system replacement.

What Our Customers Say

Real reviews from Google — 5 stars across the board

★★★★★

“Honest and smart mechanic. Scott will explain what needs to be done. He replaced my water pump and my car is working perfectly! This was after taking it to 2 shops previous to Scott's. He will be my first option from now on. Saved me a ton of money, was honest in his assessment, and fast! 100% recommend!”

“Scott has always preferred good work on my vehicles. I had his shop replace the driveline on my 2014 VW Touareg — not an easy job. The cost was cheaper than another shop. They did a great job. I had them rebuild the alternator because it was too cold for me to do it. The cost was better than I thought. I am very pleased with their work. Scott has always given me good solid advice.”
