Why Dodge Charger Drivers Choose Scott's Auto
Charger owners come to Scott's because they want a shop that understands the difference between a 3.6L Pentastar and a 5.7L HEMI — and knows why the repair approach isn't the same. We've worked on enough of these cars to know which generation-specific problems to look for without you having to tell us.
HEMI and Pentastar Experience
We work on 3.6L Pentastar V6s, 5.7L HEMIs, and 6.4L SRT engines regularly. Each has its own known failure points, and we know them all — from MDS lifter issues to exhaust manifold cracks.
Clutch and Drivetrain Specialists
Manual Chargers are rare, but we handle them too. For automatics, we inspect transmission behavior, shift quality, and fluid condition on every visit — because Charger transmissions take a beating.
Straight Talk, Written Estimates
The mechanic who diagnoses your Charger is the one who fixes it. You get a plain-language explanation of what's wrong and a written estimate before any work begins — no surprises.
Free Diagnosis on Every Charger
We road test, pull codes, and inspect your Charger before recommending anything. You know what it needs and what it costs before we start. No diagnostic fee, no pressure.
When to Bring Your Dodge Charger In
Chargers are big, fast cars, and certain wear items pay the price for it. We've been diagnosing and repairing Chargers long enough to know which problems show up first on which engine and trim. If your Charger is showing any of the symptoms below, bring it in — diagnosis is free.
HEMI MDS Lifter Tick or Misfire
The 5.7L HEMI's Multi-Displacement System can develop collapsed lifters, especially in cars that don't get regular oil changes or sit for extended periods. A persistent tick at idle — particularly on startup — or a misfire code on a cylinder controlled by MDS are common early symptoms. We inspect the valvetrain and determine whether you're dealing with a lifter, a collapsed pushrod, or something upstream like oil pressure.
Learn more →Exhaust Manifold Cracks and Leaks
Cracked exhaust manifolds are a known issue on the 5.7L HEMI — the cast iron manifolds crack near the collector, producing a ticking or tapping sound that gets louder when the engine is cold and sometimes quiets down once everything expands at operating temperature. It's easy to misdiagnose as a valvetrain tick. We inspect the full exhaust path and repair or replace manifolds properly.
Learn more →Brake Fade and Wear on Heavy Braking
The Charger is a heavy car — especially V8 models — and the factory brake setup works hard. High-speed stops, mountain canyon driving, and spirited use accelerate rotor wear and can cause brake fade. We see warped rotors, glazed pads, and sticking calipers regularly. If your Charger pulls on braking, vibrates through the pedal, or squeals, bring it in before the problem gets worse.
Learn more →Rough Ride and Suspension Wear
Charger struts and shocks absorb a lot of force — especially on Utah roads with their freeze-thaw pothole cycles. Worn struts produce a bouncy, floating ride and vague steering. If your Charger bottoms out on dips or the front end dives hard under braking, the struts are likely due. We inspect and replace shocks and struts and check associated bushings and mounts at the same time.
Learn more →Check Engine Light — Catalytic Converter Codes
Chargers — especially older 5.7L models — trigger P0420 and P0430 codes from failing catalytic converters. The HEMI runs hot, and high-mileage cats degrade. We confirm whether the cat itself has failed or whether an upstream issue (oxygen sensor, exhaust leak) is triggering the code before recommending replacement.
Learn more →Timing Chain Rattle on High-Mileage HEMIs
High-mileage 5.7L HEMIs with infrequent oil changes can develop timing chain stretch — the first sign is usually a brief metallic rattle on cold startup that fades as oil pressure builds. Don't wait. A worn chain can jump timing and cause serious internal damage. We inspect the chain, tensioner, and guides and advise whether you're still ahead of the damage.

Scott's Auto & Clutch Repair has been independently owned and operated at the same South Salt Lake location since 1990. We're not a chain and we don't have a service advisor layer — the mechanic who diagnoses your Charger is the one who repairs it. That accountability matters, especially on a performance car where a misdiagnosis wastes your time and money.
Whether your Charger is a V6 daily driver, a 5.7L HEMI R/T, or a 6.4L SRT, we know the platform. We've seen the common failure points on all of them and we'll give you a straight answer about what your car needs — written estimate before any work begins, no upsell, no guesswork.
How We Work With Dodge Charger Drivers
Tell Us What Your Charger Is Doing
Describe the noise, the warning light, the handling change, or the service you need. More detail means faster diagnosis — especially on performance-oriented cars where symptoms can point to several causes.
Free Diagnostic Inspection
We road test your Charger, pull any stored codes, check fluid condition and levels, and inspect what the symptom points to — before recommending a single repair.
We Explain What We Found
Plain language, no jargon. You get a written estimate covering exactly what needs to be done, what it costs, and why. Nothing starts until you approve it.
Only the Work Your Charger Needs
We don't manufacture urgency or upsell services your car doesn't need. If something can safely wait, we tell you that too — and note it so you can plan ahead.
Road Test and Walkthrough at Pickup
We verify the repair under real driving conditions before you pick up. At pickup we walk you through what was done and what to keep an eye on going forward.

Utah's temperature swings, mountain roads, and high altitude put unique demands on your vehicle. Here's what we've learned from years of servicing Dodge Chargers in the Salt Lake Valley.
Oil changes on HEMI Chargers matter more than the sticker says: if your 5.7L Charger does a lot of short trips or sits between drives, stick to a 5,000-mile oil change interval rather than pushing to 7,500. Low or degraded oil is the leading cause of MDS lifter failure — a repair that runs several thousand dollars and is almost entirely preventable.
Utah canyon driving and your brakes: if you regularly drive Provo Canyon, Big Cottonwood, or Little Cottonwood in your Charger, inspect your brakes at least once a year. Heavy cars on long descents generate serious heat, and glazed or worn brake pads on a heavy RWD car can leave you in a bad situation. Engine braking in a lower gear helps — so does knowing when to replace pads before they're metal-on-metal.
Charger tires and Utah winters: rear-wheel-drive Chargers with performance tires can be genuinely dangerous on Utah's winter roads. All-season or dedicated winter tires make a significant difference in snow and ice. If you're running summer performance rubber year-round, consider a dedicated winter tire set on steel wheels — it's cheaper than the deductible on a slide-off accident.
